This is a 9/21/0 top-lane page: enough offense for Ignite value, CDR, scaling AD and armor penetration, then deep defense for lane durability and teamfight tankiness.

  • Decisive Strike (Q) takes points at levels 1, 8, 10, 12, 13.
  • Courage (W) takes points at levels 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
  • Judgment (E) takes points at levels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9.
  • Demacian Justice (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.

Max E first for lane wave control and sustained physical damage, then Q for stronger silence trades and chase. The early Q into E into W gives trading, clear, and defensive uptime by level 3.

Alternative — Against lanes where you only get short silence trades and cannot safely spin for the full duration, Q max after an early E point was also played.

  • Doran's ShieldYellow Trinket

Doran's Shield startDefault into most Season 3 top lanes, especially ranged harass or auto-attack poke, because the health regen and basic attack block let Perseverance reset more safely.

  • Doran's BladeYellow Trinket

Doran's Blade startUse into melee lanes you can bully early; the flat AD improves Q and E damage and gives stronger all-in threat with Ignite.

  • Cloth ArmorHealth Potion5Yellow Trinket

Cloth Armor sustain startTake this into heavy physical harass or lanes that can force repeated trades before your first recall.

Corein buy order

  • 1

The Brutalizer1,337gThe Brutalizer gives early AD, cooldown reduction and armor penetration, which are exactly the stats Garen wants for Q and E trades.

  • 2

Sunfire Cape2,650gSunfire Cape adds the armor and health needed to brawl top while its aura stacks naturally with Garen standing inside fights during Judgment.

  • 3

The Black Cleaver3,000gThe Black Cleaver turns Garen's repeated physical damage into armor shred for himself and his team while adding health and CDR.

  • Youmuu's Ghostblade2,700gFinish Youmuu's Ghostblade from Brutalizer when ahead and playing to snowball side-lane picks instead of becoming a pure frontliner.

  • Randuin's Omen3,125gBuy Randuin's Omen against fed marksmen, Tryndamere-style crit threats, or double physical carry teams.

  • Maw of Malmortius3,200gBuy Maw of Malmortius when the main danger is AP burst and you still need damage to threaten backline champions.

  • Thornmail2,200gBuy Thornmail only into teams whose main win condition is basic-attacking into you, especially lifesteal-heavy AD carries.

Attack Damage marks and quints directly feed Decisive Strike's 140% AD hit and Judgment's AD ratio; the seal/glyph slots are pushed into crit stats to match the no-defense item plan. Compared to ordinary top Garen pages, this gives up armor, magic resist, and safer lane durability for sharper all-in damage.

Not the author's. This is a 21 Defense / 9 Offense page for a top-lane Garen building Sunfire Cape, Spirit Visage, Thornmail, and Randuin's Omen. The offense points keep his early Judgment and Decisive Strike damage relevant with cooldown reduction, scaling AD, and armor penetration for The Brutalizer and Youmuu's Ghostblade. Inferred from the build and text they did publish.

Matchup against

62 champions, one-on-one
  • Ahri

    AhriUnfavoured

Ahri wins if she keeps the lane long because Charm and Spirit Rush deny Garen the clean melee uptime he needs.

Watch for Charm: stops Decisive Strike mid-approach and lets Ahri land Orb of Deception's return damage before disengaging.

    How to beat

Hold outside Charm range until she uses Orb of Deception on the wave or misses Charm, then activate Decisive Strike to break slows and force a short trade. Do not chase through all three Spirit Rush dashes; take the first silence and Judgment damage, then back out and let Perseverance reset you.

Later Finished Ahri is still safer in teamfights and can pick Garen before he reaches a carry. In side lane, Garen can pressure if Spirit Rush is down, but otherwise he should flank after Charm is spent rather than run straight through her team.

    • Stand off-angle so Orb of Deception's return path does not clip you after your trade.
    • Save Decisive Strike until after Glacial Storm-style slows are not the issue; against Ahri it is mainly your gap-close timing.
    • If Charm misses, she has to spend Spirit Rush defensively or eat silence into Judgment.
    • Demacian Justice only matters after her last Spirit Rush charge is gone.
    BuyBanshee's VeilHexdrinkerMercury's Treads
  • Akali

    AkaliEven

Garen can punish Akali's short melee windows, but Twilight Shroud and Shadow Dance let her choose when the fight actually continues.

Watch for Twilight Shroud: breaks Garen's target access and wastes Judgment time if he spins while she is hidden.

    How to beat

Do not open with Judgment into the shroud; tag her with Decisive Strike when she comes out to consume Mark of the Assassin. Fight near the edge of Twilight Shroud so you can step out, let Perseverance work, and re-enter when her Shadow Dance charges are lower.

Later Akali scales into a stronger backline assassin, while Garen remains better at holding a bruiser side lane if he can reveal or force her out of shroud. In teamfights, protect carries by silencing Akali after her first Shadow Dance instead of chasing her into fog.

    • If she marks you with Mark of the Assassin, back up until the mark timer is nearly gone.
    • Judgment is strongest after she commits out of Twilight Shroud, not before.
    • Demacian Justice can finish her through spell vamp if you wait until after her burst rotation.
    • A pink or true-sight setup matters more than another damage item in real games.
    BuyHexdrinkerSpirit VisageBanshee's Veil
  • Alistar

    AlistarFavoured

Alistar can interrupt and disengage, but he lacks the sustained damage to beat Garen in an honest duel unless Garen wastes everything into Unbreakable Will.

Watch for Unbreakable Will: removes control and heavily reduces the damage from Garen's burst window.

    How to beat

Let Alistar use Headbutt or Pulverize first, then re-enter with Decisive Strike once his displacement is down. If he casts Unbreakable Will, stop committing and use the time to reposition or regenerate instead of spinning into the damage reduction.

Later Alistar is much more valuable in teamfights because Pulverize and Headbutt decide engages, while Garen wins the side lane if Alistar is forced to answer him alone. Garen should pressure side waves and enter fights after Alistar's first combo is spent.

    • Do not Demacian Justice during Unbreakable Will unless it is guaranteed lethal.
    • Headbutt can cancel your chase, so fight with space behind Alistar when possible.
    • If he uses Pulverize only to farm or peel, that is your best silence window.
    • Alistar's healing is annoying, but not enough to beat your passive resets.
  • Amumu

    AmumuEven

Amumu is hard for Garen to burst because Tantrum and Despair reward extended melee fights, but Garen can win by taking short trades and resetting.

Watch for Despair: turns long close-range fights against Garen by draining percent maximum health while he spins beside Amumu.

    How to beat

Bait Bandage Toss from outside its line, then use Decisive Strike to enter while it is down. Trade with silence and Judgment, then leave before Despair and Tantrum grind through your health bar.

Later Amumu is far stronger in grouped fights because Curse of the Sad Mummy can win the entire engagement. In side lane, Garen can hold him, but he should avoid being the front target that lets Amumu start a full-team ultimate.

    • Do not stand in Despair just to finish a low-value trade.
    • Bandage Toss missing is the signal to walk forward, not to keep farming passively.
    • Demacian Justice is reliable because Amumu has no true escape once committed.
    • Magic resist is better than extra armor for the duel because Despair is the timer.
    BuySpirit VisageBanshee's VeilMercury's Treads
  • Anivia

    AniviaUnfavoured

Anivia controls too much space for Garen to reach her cleanly, and Rebirth means his execute often has to win the fight twice.

Watch for Crystallize: walls off Garen's Decisive Strike path and traps him inside Glacial Storm after he commits.

    How to beat

Hold side angles instead of running straight through the minion wave, and wait for Flash Frost or Crystallize to be used before committing. If you force Rebirth, make sure Judgment and Demacian Justice are not both already spent unless you can kill the egg with basic attacks.

Later Anivia dominates teamfights and sieges, while Garen only threatens her from flanks or after her wall is down. In side lane, he can shove into her slowly but should not chase through storm and wall without vision.

    • Do not ult the bird form if you cannot finish the egg afterward.
    • Decisive Strike's slow cleanse helps against Glacial Storm, but it does not solve Crystallize.
    • Flash Frost missed at close range is your best all-in window.
    • Banshee's Veil can block the spell that would otherwise stop your only approach.
    BuyBanshee's VeilSpirit VisageMercury's Treads
  • Annie

    AnnieUnfavoured

Annie's point-and-click stun burst makes Garen's approach predictable and can kill him before he gets a full melee rotation.

Watch for Pyromania-stunned Summon: Tibbers: locks Garen in place and frontloads Annie's burst before he can silence her.

    How to beat

Track Pyromania stacks constantly; do not engage when her stun is ready unless you are already in kill range. Bait a stun spell on a minion or force her to use Molten Shield, then Decisive Strike in for a short silence trade before Tibbers damage stacks up.

Later Annie is much stronger in grouped fights because Tibbers stun can decide the fight instantly. Garen should flank from fog and punish Annie after she spends Pyromania, not be the first champion she sees.

    • Count her fourth spell; this matchup is much easier when you know when stun is unavailable.
    • Silence her before Summon: Tibbers if you are already in range.
    • Molten Shield punishes basic attacks more than Judgment, so do not stand there autoing into it.
    • Hexdrinker is strongest before her full burst starts one-shotting you.
    BuyHexdrinkerBanshee's VeilMercury's Treads
  • Ashe

    AsheEven

Garen wins if he reaches Ashe, but Frost Shot, Volley, and Enchanted Crystal Arrow can keep him from ever getting full damage uptime.

Watch for Frost Shot: every basic attack slows Garen and stretches the chase until Decisive Strike expires.

    How to beat

Do not start from max range unless Ashe has already used Volley or is trapped against terrain. Use Decisive Strike to cleanse the first slow and close the last gap, then silence her before she can arrow point-blank and kite away.

Later Ashe is better in teamfights because Enchanted Crystal Arrow starts fights and her slows control space. Garen can beat her in a side lane only from brush, flank, or after arrow is down; otherwise he should pressure her frontline and look for a flash silence.

    • Boots of Swiftness directly reduce the Frost Shot problem.
    • If she holds Enchanted Crystal Arrow for melee range, juke sideways before using Demacian Justice.
    • Volley is a cone; approaching from the side cuts a lot of her poke.
    • Do not let Focus crit be her free first hit before your all-in.
    BuyBoots of SwiftnessNinja TabiRanduin's Omen
  • Blitzcrank

    BlitzcrankFavoured

Blitzcrank can disrupt Garen, but after his knockup chain he does not have the damage to win a sustained melee duel.

Watch for Power Fist: interrupts Garen's damage window and buys time for Mana Barrier to absorb the finish.

    How to beat

Let Blitzcrank hook or punch first if possible, then use Decisive Strike after the displacement to stick to him. Watch Mana Barrier before using Demacian Justice; if the shield triggers, keep spinning and wait for his real health to drop again.

Later Blitzcrank matters more through picks than side-lane duels. Garen wins alone, but in teamfights he should avoid being the free Rocket Grab target and punish Blitzcrank after the hook misses.

    • Do not ult into Mana Barrier unless the shield is already broken.
    • Rocket Grab can actually help you reach him in a pure 1v1, but it is deadly near his team.
    • Silencing after Overdrive starts prevents him from chaining spells cleanly.
    • His Static Field damage is real, but not enough if you keep the fight short.
  • Brand

    BrandUnfavoured

Brand's percent-health burn and stun setup punish Garen's straight-line engage before Garen can finish him.

Watch for Sear on a Blazed target: stuns Garen and guarantees Brand's delayed damage while Garen cannot keep moving.

    How to beat

Never run in after being tagged by Conflagration or Pillar of Flame unless Sear is down. Bait Pillar of Flame with short forward steps, then Decisive Strike through the gap and silence Brand before he can complete the Blaze combo.

Later Brand is much stronger in clustered teamfights, especially if Pyroclasm can bounce. Garen should split pressure or flank from the side, forcing Brand to spend Sear defensively instead of casting freely into the team.

    • If Blaze is on you, treat Sear as the real threat even before it is cast.
    • Step out of minions before Pyroclasm so it has fewer bounce targets.
    • Hexdrinker can absorb the burst window that would otherwise set up the execute race.
    • Judgment commits you in place long enough for Pillar of Flame if you start too early.
    BuyHexdrinkerBanshee's VeilSpirit Visage
  • Cho'Gath

    Cho'GathUnfavoured

Cho'Gath's silence, knockup, sustain, and Feast make him difficult for Garen to burst and dangerous in execute range.

Watch for Feast: true-damage executes Garen through defenses and can beat Demacian Justice in the low-health race.

    How to beat

Do not take extended trades through Vorpal Spikes and Carnivore sustain; look for Decisive Strike after Rupture misses. If Feral Scream is up, expect your execute or escape timing to be denied, so force the silence first before committing fully.

Later Cho'Gath becomes harder to move from side lane and brings stronger area control to teamfights. Garen should pressure waves, dodge Rupture, and look for enemy carries rather than trying to chew through a stacked Cho'Gath first.

    • Side-step before engaging; Rupture hit usually means the trade is lost.
    • Feral Scream can stop Demacian Justice, so do not wait too long if he is in range.
    • Health stacking helps less than usual because Feast is true damage.
    • Short trades are your friend; Carnivore rewards him when the lane slows down.
    BuyMercury's TreadsSpirit VisageWarmog's Armor
  • Corki

    CorkiUnfavoured

Corki kites Garen with Valkyrie while Gatling Gun shreds armor and his mixed damage makes single-resist builds awkward.

Watch for Valkyrie: removes Corki from Judgment range and leaves a damage trail that punishes Garen for chasing.

    How to beat

Hold brush or flank angles so Corki cannot simply Valkyrie backward in a straight line. Bait Valkyrie first, then use Decisive Strike for the second engage and silence him before Gatling Gun gets long uptime.

Later Corki is much better in teamfights if protected, and Garen only wins side fights when Valkyrie is down or Corki is pinned near terrain. Build mixed durability and look for flanks instead of front-chasing through missiles.

    • Do not chase through the Valkyrie trail unless Demacian Justice will immediately finish him.
    • Gatling Gun makes armor-only answers weaker than they look.
    • His basic attacks include true damage, so pure tanking will not win without access.
    • Silence after Valkyrie, not before, if he can still escape.
    BuyGuardian AngelNinja TabiRanduin's Omen
  • Dr. Mundo

    Dr. MundoUnfavoured

Dr. Mundo outlasts Garen in extended melee because Sadism and constant cleavers undo Garen's short burst plan.

Watch for Sadism: restores enough health to push Mundo out of Demacian Justice range and win the second half of the duel.

    How to beat

Dodge Infected Cleaver before using Decisive Strike; if the cleaver lands, he controls the spacing. Force Sadism early with a short burst, disengage while it heals, then re-enter only when the regeneration window is ending.

Later Mundo is the stronger side-lane stat check once fully built and is harder to remove from fights. Garen should avoid isolated long duels, apply Grievous Wounds if he must answer him, and look to execute lower-health carries instead.

    • Executioner's Calling is specifically valuable because Sadism is the matchup.
    • Do not Demacian Justice at the start of Sadism unless he is already truly lethal.
    • Cleaver slows are the setup; sidestepping them matters more than soaking them.
    • Perseverance cannot match Mundo's ultimate during an all-in.

Evelynn can choose the first hit and kite with Dark Frenzy, but Garen wins if he survives the opener and keeps her in melee silence range.

Watch for Agony's Embrace: slows Garen during Evelynn's burst window and gives her space to leave after Ravage.

    How to beat

Stay near minions or controlled vision so Shadow Walk does not give her a perfect opener. Once she commits with Ravage, immediately Decisive Strike to silence and stick, then use Judgment before Dark Frenzy movement lets her reset.

Later Evelynn is more dangerous as a pick champion, while Garen is sturdier in direct front-to-back fights. In side lane, the duel depends on vision and who starts; in teamfights, Garen should peel her first dash into the backline.

    • Do not walk into fog at half health; Shadow Walk turns that into her fight.
    • Silence after Ravage lands so she cannot instantly continue the spell chain.
    • Agony's Embrace slow can make Judgment miss its full duration if you start too far away.
    • Magic resist plus health is better than armor against her burst.

  • Ezreal

    EzrealUnfavoured

Ezreal wins most clean duels by never giving Garen a full melee window, using Mystic Shot poke and Arcane Shift to reset spacing.

Watch for Arcane Shift: breaks Garen's engage after Decisive Strike and forces him to chase with no second gap closer.

    How to beat

Do not spend Decisive Strike until Arcane Shift is down or Ezreal is trapped against terrain. Walk at him through minions to reduce Mystic Shot angles, then commit only when a missed Q or used E gives you enough time for silence into Judgment.

Later Ezreal is far stronger in teamfights and sieges when he can kite behind allies. Garen can threaten him from fog or flank, but in a visible side-lane chase Ezreal should escape unless he wastes Arcane Shift.

    • Minions are cover against Mystic Shot cooldown resets.
    • If he Arcane Shifts aggressively, that is your real all-in window.
    • Do not chase in a straight line after Trueshot Barrage chip; let Perseverance recover first.
    • Boots of Swiftness help stick after his slows and spacing tools, but they do not replace flank angles.

  • Fiddlesticks

    FiddlesticksUnfavoured

Fiddlesticks can fear Garen out of his engage and Drain through a duel if Garen cannot interrupt or leave the tether.

Watch for Terrify: makes Garen lose control during his only approach and sets up Drain or Crowstorm damage.

    How to beat

Hold Decisive Strike until after Terrify if you can survive the first spell, then silence Fiddlesticks to interrupt Drain. If Crowstorm starts from fog, leave immediately with Q movement instead of trying to win inside the ultimate from full duration.

Later Fiddlesticks is much stronger in teamfights when Crowstorm hits multiple targets. Garen should ward flank channels, silence Drain or Crowstorm follow-up, and avoid being the champion who face-checks him first.

    • Decisive Strike silence cancels Drain if you reach him during the channel.
    • Mercury's Treads reduce the fear window enough to matter.
    • Do not fight inside Crowstorm unless Demacian Justice will end it quickly.
    • Dark Wind silence can delay your ult, so cast before the bounce chain if lethal.

  • Gangplank

    GangplankEven

Gangplank can poke and cleanse control, but Garen wins melee uptime if he reaches him after Parrrley harassment is spent.

Watch for Remove Scurvy: clears Garen's silence pressure indirectly by letting Gangplank heal through the trade and keep fighting instead of falling into execute range.

    How to beat

Do not let repeated Parrrley shots start the duel before you are close enough to answer. Use Decisive Strike after he steps up for Parrrley, force Remove Scurvy with the first trade, then re-engage while the heal is down.

Later Gangplank brings stronger global teamfight impact with Cannon Barrage and can kite fights with Raise Morale. Garen can still beat him in a committed side duel, but he must respect crit-enhanced Parrrley poke before the all-in.

    • Doran's Shield is specifically useful into repeated Parrrley lanes.
    • If Remove Scurvy is down, Demacian Justice becomes much harder for him to play around.
    • Do not chase through Cannon Barrage unless you already have Decisive Strike ready.
    • Ninja Tabi is better than generic armor because Parrrley behaves like an attack pattern you must repeatedly absorb.

  • Gragas

    GragasEven

Garen can punish Gragas if Body Slam is down, but Gragas controls the spacing with Barrel Roll, Body Slam, and Explosive Cask enough to deny clean all-ins.

Watch for Body Slam: stops your Q approach, slows you, and lets Gragas disengage before Judgment gets full value.

    How to beat

Hold just outside Body Slam range and use Decisive Strike mainly after he spends it or misses Barrel Roll slow. If he uses Drunken Rage greedily in lane range, Q in, silence him, spin through him, then back out before his cooldowns return.

Later Finished builds make Gragas stronger in grouped fights because Explosive Cask can split your team or deny your execute angle. In side lane you can still pressure him if you avoid long poke cycles, but in teamfights look for flanks after he has used Cask.

    • Do not Q first if Body Slam is ready; he can interrupt your entry and walk out.
    • Your Q slow cleanse is best saved for Barrel Roll or Body Slam slow, not for starting every trade.
    • If Explosive Cask is up, stand so it cannot knock you away from a low-health target.

  • Heimerdinger

    HeimerdingerUnfavoured

Heimerdinger makes the duel awkward because turrets and grenade punish the exact short-range path Garen needs to take.

Watch for CH-1 Concussion Grenade: direct hit stuns you in turret range and turns your engage into free damage for Heimerdinger.

    How to beat

Do not fight inside a prepared turret nest unless minions are already soaking shots. Walk in and out at the edge of turret range to bait Grenade, then use Decisive Strike after the stun is down to kill a turret or force Heimerdinger back.

Later Heimerdinger is still better around sieges and choke points, while Garen is better at catching him away from placed turrets. In teamfights, avoid being the first body into turrets and look for side angles after his Grenade misses.

    • Killing one turret cleanly is often better than chasing Heimer through two more.
    • Silence stops his immediate spell follow-up but does not remove existing turret damage.
    • Let Perseverance reset after rocket poke before forcing another entry.

  • Janna

    JannaFavoured

Janna can disengage almost forever, but if she is forced into a true duel Garen's damage and execute overpower her low kill threat.

Watch for Monsoon: knocks you out of Judgment range and resets the health gap you worked to create.

    How to beat

Do not spend Decisive Strike into an obvious tornado or Monsoon angle unless you only need to force the cooldown. Walk her down after Zephyr is used, silence before she can chain shield and knockback, and save Demacian Justice until Monsoon healing is gone.

Later Janna does not side-lane into Garen, but she is much more valuable in teamfights by denying your dives. Flank instead of front-walking, and accept forcing Monsoon as a win if it protects your carries.

    • Q breaks Zephyr's slow, so trade after she spends it to kite.
    • If Eye of the Storm is on a carry or turret, Janna is easier to threaten herself.
    • Do not ult into Monsoon healing unless the execute is certain.

  • Jarvan IV

    Jarvan IVEven

Jarvan's armor shred and bursty engage can win short trades, but Garen wins if he survives the opener and keeps Judgment on him.

Watch for Dragon Strike: lowers your Armor and makes Jarvan's follow-up attacks and Cataclysm trade much harder.

    How to beat

Avoid standing in line with Demacian Standard so Jarvan cannot get a free knock-up into Martial Cadence. If he misses the Standard-Dragon Strike combo, Q through Golden Aegis slow, silence him, and commit to the extended trade.

Later Jarvan brings stronger engage to teamfights, while Garen is sturdier in simple side-lane brawls if he is not repeatedly armor-shredded first. In grouped fights, punish Jarvan after he uses Cataclysm rather than chasing past his team.

    • Do not let his first Martial Cadence hit start every trade for free.
    • Q can break Golden Aegis slow when you need to stay on him.
    • Inside Cataclysm, keep spinning instead of wasting time trying to reposition.

  • Jax

    JaxUnfavoured

Jax scales through extended melee combat better than Garen and Counter Strike cuts the value of Garen's Q attack and area damage window.

Watch for Counter Strike: dodges your basic attacks, reduces area damage, and can stun you if you stay too close too long.

    How to beat

Bait Counter Strike with movement rather than committing Q into it. Once it ends, silence with Decisive Strike and unload Judgment, then leave before Grandmaster's Might attack-speed stacks turn the trade around.

Later Jax becomes the stronger side-lane duelist and can force Garen away from long isolated fights. In teamfights, do not mark him alone; silence him when he dives and use Demacian Justice after his defensive window is spent.

    • Never open with Q while Counter Strike is active unless you are only disengaging.
    • Short trades are playable; standing and autoing after Judgment favors Jax.
    • Armor helps early, but his scaling still demands cooldown discipline.

  • Karthus

    KarthusFavoured

Garen wins the close-range duel if he reaches Karthus, but he must respect Wall of Pain and Death Defied after the kill.

Watch for Wall of Pain: strips your ability to stay on Karthus and gives him time to land repeated Lay Waste casts.

    How to beat

Approach from angles where Wall of Pain cannot cover your whole path, and use Decisive Strike after the slow if possible. Once you connect, silence him, keep moving during Judgment to avoid isolated Lay Waste hits, and step away immediately after killing him.

Later Karthus is more dangerous in teamfights because Death Defied and Requiem still matter even when he dies. In side lane Garen can threaten him, but in grouped fights your job is to force him to spend damage badly and not die in his passive zone.

    • Do not stand still during Judgment; Lay Waste punishes predictable movement.
    • After Demacian Justice kills him, leave Death Defied range immediately.

  • Kassadin

    KassadinEven

Garen can beat Kassadin before he freely chains Riftwalks, but Kassadin's silence and blink make clean melee uptime difficult.

Watch for Riftwalk: denies your sustained melee range and lets Kassadin choose when the trade continues.

    How to beat

Pressure him before multiple Riftwalk casts stack up and avoid chasing blindly after the first blink. Use Decisive Strike when he has already spent Riftwalk or is trapped near minions or terrain, then front-load damage during the silence.

Later Kassadin is harder to pin down late and contributes more pick pressure around fights. Garen should push side waves when Kassadin shows elsewhere, and in teamfights hold silence for his entry rather than chasing him through blinks.

    • Null Sphere can silence you before Q lands, so do not telegraph from max range.
    • If he Riftwalks offensively, that is your best punish window.
    • Magic resist is stronger than raw armor in this matchup.

  • Katarina

    KatarinaFavoured

Garen's silence and execute line up well into Katarina because she needs uninterrupted channel time and resets to win fights.

Watch for Death Lotus: shreds you if your silence is down or you let her channel while you are too low.

    How to beat

Hold Decisive Strike until she commits with Shunpo or starts Death Lotus. Silence immediately, spin through her reduced-damage window, and use Demacian Justice before she can reset or escape after the channel is stopped.

Later Katarina is more threatening in chaotic teamfights than in a straight duel, because Voracity rewards any low-health cleanup. Stay near your carries with Q ready, and save silence specifically to break Death Lotus.

    • Do not waste Q on her before Shunpo if she can simply jump away.
    • Your silence cancels Death Lotus; that is the matchup.

  • Kayle

    KayleUnfavoured

Kayle wins many straight duels by kiting with Reckoning and Righteous Fury while Intervention denies Garen's execute timing.

Watch for Intervention: blocks Demacian Justice and can completely waste your kill window.

    How to beat

Save Decisive Strike to cleanse Reckoning's slow or to punish after Divine Blessing is used. Do not ult into Intervention; force it with Q and Judgment pressure, disengage briefly, then re-enter when her immunity is gone.

Later Kayle usually wins side-lane spacing if she has room to kite, and she is more flexible in teamfights because Intervention can save a carry. Garen should flank from fog and force her ultimate before committing Demacian Justice.

    • Reckoning slow is the cooldown your Q most often needs to answer.
    • If Righteous Fury is active, do not chase through open lane without minion cover or a flank.
    • Count Intervention before pressing R; guessing loses the duel.

  • Kennen

    KennenUnfavoured

Kennen's ranged poke, Lightning Rush escape, and repeated stuns make it difficult for Garen to ever get a full trade.

Watch for Mark of the Storm stun: repeated marks lock you down and stop your chase before Judgment finishes.

    How to beat

Stay out of free auto and Electrical Surge mark cycles, then use brush or fog to shorten the engage distance. Commit only after Lightning Rush is down or after he spends Thundering Shuriken, and save Q's slow cleanse for the moment he tries to disengage.

Later Kennen is much stronger in grouped fights with Slicing Maelstrom, while Garen can only side-lane him if he catches him without escape. In teamfights, avoid stacking with allies and silence him before or during his storm if you can reach him.

    • Do not enter with two marks already on you; the stun is guaranteed soon.

  • Kog'Maw

    Kog'MawEven

Garen kills Kog'Maw quickly if he reaches him, but Bio-Arcane Barrage and Void Ooze make the approach costly.

Watch for Bio-Arcane Barrage: gives Kog'Maw the range and percent-health damage to shred you before you can stay in melee.

    How to beat

Do not walk at him through open ground while Bio-Arcane Barrage is active. Bait Void Ooze, use Decisive Strike to break the slow, and commit from brush or flank so he has fewer autos before your silence lands.

Later Kog'Maw becomes a much better teamfight champion if protected, but he still loses isolated fights when Garen reaches him cleanly. Your late-game job is flank pressure, not front-lining through his full range.

    • Q cleanse is for Void Ooze, not for starting from too far away.

Watch for Sonic Wave / Resonating Strike: marks you for Lee's strongest gap-close and execute-style follow-up damage.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions to deny Sonic Wave and force Lee to spend energy on weaker trades. If he misses Q or uses Safeguard forward, silence him before he can chain spells, spin through Iron Will, and save your execute until after Dragon's Rage displacement.

Later Lee Sin falls off as a pure side-lane duelist compared with tanky Garen, but his teamfight kick can remove you from the target you want. Stay patient, eat his cooldowns, and re-enter after Dragon's Rage is used.

    • A missed Sonic Wave is your clearest all-in signal.

Leona has heavy crowd control but lacks the sustained solo damage to beat Garen in an equal 1v1.

Watch for Shield of Daybreak: stuns you long enough for Leona to chain Zenith Blade and Solar Flare or stall until help arrives.

    How to beat

This duel is mostly about not mistaking her lockdown for kill pressure. Let her Eclipse run, then trade after its resistances fade; use Decisive Strike to stick through her slows and silence before she can chain the next spell.

Later Leona does not want a side-lane duel with Garen, but she is far more relevant as a teamfight engager. Garen should avoid being the first target she locks down and look to punish her backline after her crowd control is spent.

    • Wait out Eclipse before spending your full Judgment damage.

  • Lulu

    LuluUnfavoured

Lulu's slow, polymorph, shield, and Wild Growth deny Garen's engage and make the duel heavily spacing-dependent in her favor.

Watch for Whimsy: polymorphs you during Decisive Strike or Judgment and removes the window where you are supposed to deal damage.

    How to beat

Do not commit from max range where Glitterlance and Whimsy can both stop you before contact. Bait Whimsy with a partial approach, then use Q after Glitterlance slow or when she has already spent Help, Pix! defensively.

Later Lulu is much stronger in teamfights because Wild Growth and Whimsy ruin your dive or save your target. In side lane she still avoids the duel rather than kills quickly, so push waves and force her to answer without overchasing.

    • If Whimsy is up, your Q engage can turn into no damage at all.

Watch for Light Binding: roots you in place and gives Lux time for Lucent Singularity and Finales Funkeln before you can trade back.

    How to beat

Approach through minions or from an angle that makes Light Binding harder to land. Once Binding misses, use Decisive Strike immediately, silence her before Prismatic Barrier or Singularity slows the retreat, and finish before her cooldowns cycle.

Later Lux contributes more reliable poke and picks in teamfights, but she cannot side-lane safely against a Garen with flank access. In grouped play, do not front-walk through Binding; come from fog after she uses it.

    • A missed Light Binding is the all-in timer.

Watch for Ground Slam: reduces your Attack Speed and adds armor-scaling damage during the melee trade.

    How to beat

Pop Granite Shield with a light trade or minion pressure before committing your full combo. Use Decisive Strike after Seismic Shard steals movement speed, then spin through him while Ground Slam is down or after its attack-speed slow matters least.

Later Malphite is more valuable in teamfights because Unstoppable Force can start fights on your carries. In side lane the duel stays slow and often neutral; Garen should pressure waves, force Malphite to answer, and join fights after Malphite's ultimate is tracked.

    • Do not full-combo into a fresh Granite Shield.

Watch for Nether Grasp suppresses Garen in Null Zone and denies the Q-E-R finish.

    How to beat

Hold outside Malefic Visions range until Decisive Strike can reach him in one burst, and do not walk through Voidling plus Null Zone damage just to start a trade. Bait Call of the Void or force him to push, then Q through the slowless gap and silence him before he can cast Nether Grasp. If he has ultimate, only commit when you can kill during the silence or when Quicksilver Sash is ready.

Later Finished Malzahar is better in grouped fights because Nether Grasp picks one target and his zone controls choke points, while Garen is stronger only if he can flank. In side lane, Garen can threaten him with QSS and brush control, but without cleanse he must respect being held in place for his team.

    • Silence him before Nether Grasp; after he starts channeling you need an item answer or help.

Garen can burst Yi before resets, but Yi wins extended auto-attack fights if he dodges key damage with Alpha Strike or stalls with Meditate.

Watch for Alpha Strike can dodge the start of Judgment or Demacian Justice timing and keep Yi in melee afterward.

    How to beat

Do not open with Judgment while Alpha Strike is ready unless he has already committed into you. Tag him with Decisive Strike after Alpha Strike lands, spin while he is silenced, then hold Demacian Justice until Meditate is broken or he is clearly in execute range. If he uses Highlander first, kite toward terrain or your wave until the first burst window is over.

Later Late side lane is volatile: Yi scales harder in pure DPS, but Garen can still delete him if silence lands before Meditate. In teamfights, Garen should mark Yi after he enters instead of chasing backline, because silence plus execute can stop the reset chain.

    • Wait for Alpha Strike to reappear, then Q him immediately where he lands.

    How to beat

Stay out of Double Up bounce angles and use brush or minions to deny free Strut spacing. Break Make It Rain's slow with Decisive Strike, run at her diagonally to leave Bullet Time's cone, then silence and spin before she can kite. Do not burn Q just for movement unless you can actually connect.

Later Finished Miss Fortune is much stronger in grouped fights if protected, while Garen remains the better isolated duelist. In side lane she should not be allowed to collect waves alone; in teamfights, flank rather than front-to-back through Bullet Time.

    • Do not stand behind low-health minions where Double Up can crit-poke you for free.

Watch for Black Shield blocks Decisive Strike's silence and lets Morgana survive the all-in setup.

    How to beat

Pressure her shield cooldown without committing your full combo, then back away from Tormented Soil while Perseverance resets. If Black Shield is down, Decisive Strike into Judgment forces her to either ult defensively or lose the trade. When Soul Shackles is attached, choose immediately: finish her inside the silence window or leave before the stun lands.

Later Morgana is more valuable in teamfights because Black Shield and Soul Shackles control engages, while Garen is more threatening in side lane if he can force shield first. Later, Garen should flank from fog and make her shield herself instead of shielding a carry.

    • Do not Q into Black Shield unless the damage alone wins the trade.

Watch for Wither removes Garen's ability to choose the trade length and lets Nasus keep hitting after Judgment ends.

    How to beat

Fight him before Siphoning Strike is stacked, especially when he walks up for cannon or Q last hits. Use Decisive Strike after Wither starts so the slow break gets value, then trade hard and disengage before Fury of the Sands drains too much health. If he ults first, back out and re-enter after the duration instead of dueling inside it.

Later Finished Nasus usually wins the side lane if he has farmed, while Garen has cleaner target access in messy teamfights. Garen should stop trying to stat-check him late and instead shove, rotate first, and execute carries while Nasus is kited.

    • Your best trades happen when Siphoning Strike is used on a minion.

Watch for Javelin Toss chunks Garen from outside his engage range and forces him to spend health before the duel starts.

    How to beat

Use minions and brush edges to deny long Javelin Toss angles, and do not chase through Bushwhack because the resistance shred makes her cougar burst real. Commit only when Decisive Strike can reach her after Pounce or when she uses Primal Surge and cannot immediately reset the trade. If she stays human and kites cleanly, accept short wave-control wins rather than forcing a bad chase.

Later Nidalee is better at siege and poke, while Garen is better if he finds her in a side brush or after a missed spear. In teamfights, Garen should avoid being softened before engage and threaten the backline once her trap line is bypassed.

    • A trapped Garen is much easier for cougar Nidalee to burst; wait out the shred when possible.

    How to beat

Do not trade beside enemy minions if Consume is available to erase your poke and heal him. Save Decisive Strike to break Ice Blast's movement slow, then silence him before Absolute Zero can build meaningful damage. If he channels ultimate outside silence range, simply walk out and re-engage afterward.

Later Nunu rarely wants a true side-lane duel; his value is Blood Boil and objective control for his carries. Garen wins isolated fights, but in teamfights he should avoid wasting cooldowns on Nunu unless silencing Absolute Zero protects the team.

    How to beat

Avoid long trades where Undertow chains keep you in axe range, and never stand still trading autos after Judgment ends. Bait Ragnarok with a short engage, disengage with Decisive Strike movement if possible, then return when the immunity is gone. You need to execute before Vicious Strikes and low-health attack speed swing the duel back.

Later Finished Olaf remains favored in side lane if he can run Garen down, while Garen is more useful deleting vulnerable targets once Olaf spends Ragnarok forward. In teamfights, do not peel Olaf with silence during Ragnarok; either kite him or race his backline.

Do not let repeated Spear Shot chip you below execute pressure; back off long enough for Perseverance whenever the wave allows. Track Aegis Protection before using Decisive Strike, because his block can waste the empowered hit. Once his stun and passive block are down, Q-E trades are heavily Garen-favored.

Later Pantheon falls off harder in pure duels, so Garen becomes favored in side lane after armor and health. In teamfights, Pantheon looks for Grand Skyfall flanks, while Garen should punish him after he lands rather than chase him before the fight starts.

    • Pop Aegis Protection with a basic attack or Judgment tick before relying on Q damage.
    • Courage during the stun-plus-Heartseeker window saves more health than using it late.
    • If Pantheon uses Grand Skyfall away from lane, shove immediately because he cannot answer the wave.

  • Rammus

    RammusUnfavoured

Rammus punishes Garen's physical melee damage with armor, taunt, and reflected damage, making the duel inefficient for Garen.

Watch for Defensive Ball Curl massively raises Rammus's defenses and reflects damage while Garen is forced to hit him.

    How to beat

Do not unload Judgment into Defensive Ball Curl unless the kill is guaranteed. Bait Powerball or Puncturing Taunt, step away while Ball Curl is active, then trade during the downtime with short Q-E bursts. If he taunts you under Tremors or near a turret, use Courage early to reduce the forced damage window.

Later Rammus is not usually a side-lane kill target for Garen; he is more valuable as engage and peel in teamfights. Garen should ignore him when possible and use flanks to reach carries after Rammus commits Powerball or Taunt elsewhere.

    • Spinning into Ball Curl is usually losing damage conversion.
    • Mercury's Treads reduce the taunt window and matter more than extra chase here.
    • If Powerball misses, Rammus has little way to force the duel immediately.

  • Ryze

    RyzeUnfavoured

Ryze's root, repeated spell rotation, and spell vamp let him kite and drain Garen before Garen can finish him.

Watch for Rune Prison roots Garen at the edge of Ryze's range and guarantees another spell cycle.

    How to beat

Do not walk at him predictably through open lane; use brush, minion pressure, or flank angles so Decisive Strike starts close enough to connect. Save Q for after Rune Prison when possible, because breaking the slowless gap is the only way to reach him. If Desperate Power is active and he is healing through rotation, disengage and re-enter after it ends.

Later Finished Ryze is stronger in extended side-lane duels and grouped fights if he has room to cast. Garen needs magic resist and flank timing; his job is to silence Ryze before the spell chain starts, not absorb a full rotation front-to-back.

    • Rune Prison is the cooldown that decides whether you ever touch him.
    • Do not fight inside his Desperate Power timing unless he is already executable.
    • Spell Flux makes follow-up magic damage worse, so short trades are safer than lingering.

  • Shaco

    ShacoEven

Garen beats Shaco if he pins down the real body, but Shaco wins by splitting the fight with fear boxes, clone confusion, and backstab angles.

Watch for Jack In The Box fears Garen during the chase and lets Shaco freely reposition behind him.

    How to beat

Do not chase through unwarded brush or narrow paths where boxes are likely stacked. Hold Decisive Strike until after Deceive or until you can reveal his landing path with minion movement and damage patterns, then silence the real Shaco before Hallucinate turns the trade messy. If the clone appears, stop committing cooldowns until you identify which body takes real damage or moves like the player.

Later Shaco usually avoids fair side-lane duels and plays picks, but Garen wins if Shaco is forced into direct melee without setup. In teamfights, Garen should protect carries from Shaco's entry or collapse on him after Deceive is spent.

    • Do not enter a box nest just because Shaco is low.
    • Judgment can damage both clone and real Shaco, but Demacian Justice must be saved for the real one.
    • If Deceive is used aggressively, his escape window is much worse.

  • Shen

    ShenEven

Shen is hard to kill through shield and sustain, but he also lacks the damage to decisively beat Garen unless Garen wastes trades into Feint and taunt.

Watch for Shadow Dash taunts Garen and can turn a winning trade into forced damage under Shen's wave or turret.

    How to beat

Trade when Ki Strike is down and avoid giving him free Vorpal Blade sustain by fighting inside his minion wave. Bait Feint with movement or a light Q hit, then use Judgment after the shield expires. Keep silence ready if he channels Stand United nearby, because stopping the teleport is often more valuable than winning the duel slowly.

Later Shen's global pressure beats Garen's in map play, while the side-lane duel often stays too slow for either to kill cleanly. Garen should shove hard, threaten interrupt on Stand United, and arrive to fights as a flanker rather than matching Shen's utility.

    • Silencing Stand United can win the map play even if you do not kill Shen.
    • Do not full-combo into Feint unless you need only a few more hits.
    • Shadow Dash is much weaker if you stand away from his turret line.

  • Singed

    SingedUnfavoured

Singed wins by refusing the stationary duel, dragging Garen through Poison Trail, and using Fling plus Insanity Potion to outlast him.

Watch for Fling puts Garen behind Singed, forcing him to chase through Poison Trail and lose the trade length.

    How to beat

Never chase Singed in a straight line through poison just because Decisive Strike is active. Hold the side of the wave, punish him when he walks in for Fling, and use Q either to dodge the engage angle or silence him before he can throw you. If Insanity Potion is running, take the wave or back off; fight after it ends unless he is already in execute range.

Later Finished Singed is better at side-lane proxy pressure and disruption, while Garen is better at quickly killing a carry if he ignores Singed. In teamfights, do not follow Singed away from the fight; cut off his carries or silence him when he tries to Fling a priority target.

    • The losing pattern is Q-ing after him through Poison Trail.
    • Mega Adhesive can be answered by saving Decisive Strike for the slow break.
    • If he uses Fling and cannot leave immediately, that is your best Judgment window.

  • Sion

    SionUnfavoured

Sion's point-click stun, shield burst, and Cannibalism sustain make straight melee fights dangerous for Garen once Sion has items.

Watch for Cannibalism lets Sion lifesteal through Garen's sustained damage and turn low-health trades around.

    How to beat

Do not open into a fully charged Death's Caress shield; either break it safely or wait out the detonation timing. Use Courage for Cryptic Gaze plus shield burst, then answer with silence and Judgment once his shield is gone. If Cannibalism is active, kite the duration instead of feeding him lifesteal, then re-enter for Demacian Justice.

Later Finished Sion is favored in direct side-lane duels if he can keep attacking, while Garen is better at burst execution and silence utility in fights. Garen should avoid prolonged auto trades and look for short windows after Sion's shield or ultimate is spent.

    • Let Death's Caress expire or pop before committing your full spin.
    • Executioner's Calling is specifically valuable if Sion's Cannibalism is deciding fights.
    • Use Courage before the stun lands, not after the shield damage has already hit.

  • Sivir

    SivirFavoured

Sivir can block one spell and kite briefly, but her short range and lack of dash make her vulnerable once Garen baits Spell Shield.

Watch for Spell Shield can block Decisive Strike or Demacian Justice, ruining Garen's kill sequence.

    How to beat

Approach from brush or after Boomerang Blade is used, and do not spend your decisive spell into Spell Shield. Tap her shield with a lower-value ability or wait it out, then Q for silence and stay on top of her through Judgment. If On The Hunt is active, save Decisive Strike until she has committed directionally so the speed burst actually closes the gap.

Later Sivir is far better in grouped fights because On The Hunt and Ricochet scale with her team, but Garen still wins the isolated duel if he reaches her without feeding Spell Shield. In teamfights, flank from the side and force her shield before Demacian Justice.

    • Never ult into Spell Shield unless you have already seen it used.
    • Boomerang Blade is easiest to punish after the return path misses you.
    • Her 425 range means brush control gives Garen real engage threat.

  • Skarner

    SkarnerEven

Garen wins short trades and execute windows, but Skarner's shielded stickiness and suppression can keep him in the fight long enough to outlast a bad engage.

Watch for Impale suppresses Garen during his commit and can drag him through Skarner's Crystal Slash damage or into allies.

    How to beat

Hold just outside Crystal Slash range and trade when Crystalline Exoskeleton has been broken or timed out. Use Decisive Strike after Fracture or shield speed forces contact, then spin through him and back out before Energize lets him cycle Q and W again. Do not spend Demacian Justice until Impale is down or Skarner is already too low to turn the fight.

Later Skarner is more dangerous in coordinated fights because Impale can remove Garen from a fight or catch a carry, while Garen is better at punishing isolated targets after the suppression is used. In side lane, Garen can contest him if he avoids long shielded chases; in teamfights, wait for Skarner to ult someone else or silence him before he reaches your backline.

    • Breaking Crystalline Exoskeleton removes both his speed and attack speed, so a short E trade can end his chase window.
    • Do not Q only for damage if Impale is available; the silence can deny his pull if you connect first.
    • If he keeps Crystal Slash charged on minions, respect the next melee trade more than the first one.
    • Back away after your spin unless his shield is gone and he is already in execute range.

  • Sona

    SonaFavoured

Sona can poke and disengage once, but she is too fragile to survive Garen reaching melee range with silence and execute.

Watch for Crescendo stuns Garen during his all-in and buys Sona the space to kite or let teammates collapse.

    How to beat

Stand outside her 550 poke until Decisive Strike is ready, then enter decisively rather than eating repeated Hymn of Valor hits. If Crescendo is available, angle from brush or fog so she has less time to cast it before the silence lands. Once she uses Crescendo or misses it, stay on top of her with Judgment and finish before Aria of Perseverance cycles again.

Later Sona is not a side-lane duelist; Garen kills her alone if he reaches her. Her real value is teamfight Crescendo and auras, so flank instead of running through the front line and force her to ult defensively.

    • Power Chord damage reduction can blunt your burst; do not ult through it if you can wait it out.
    • Brush control matters because Sona dies much faster when she cannot pre-cast Crescendo on your approach.
    • If she spends Song of Celerity to disengage early, your Q speed can still catch the second step.
    • Do not let repeated Q poke reset Perseverance for free before the actual engage.

  • Soraka

    SorakaFavoured

Soraka's silence and healing delay the kill, but she has little way to stop Garen once he closes distance and times the execute after Wish.

Watch for Infuse silences Garen and can stop Decisive Strike, Judgment timing, or Demacian Justice at the key moment.

    How to beat

Do not start the fight by walking through repeated Starcall stacks; approach from brush or after she uses Infuse. Force Astral Blessing or Wish with Q and E, then hold Demacian Justice until after the big heal is spent. If she silences you first, keep moving with her instead of panicking, then commit when your abilities come back.

Later Soraka should not match Garen alone in a side lane, but her heals can erase Garen's first target in teamfights. Your job is to pressure her cooldowns, silence her before Wish if possible, and avoid ulting into a heal that is clearly still available.

    • Infuse is the spell that matters; without it she cannot stop your execute timing.
    • Astral Blessing's armor makes physical damage worse, so do not judge execute range by your spin damage during the buff.
    • If Wish is up, treat her health bar as larger until she spends it.
    • Short retreats after Starcall poke let Perseverance undo her low-pressure damage.
    BuyExecutioner's CallingMercury's TreadsHexdrinker
  • Taric

    TaricEven

Garen has better sustained melee damage, but Taric's armor aura, heal, stun, and close-range burst make a forced all-in surprisingly inefficient.

Watch for Dazzle stuns Garen and lets Taric land close-range damage, heal, and walk out of Judgment's best ticks.

    How to beat

Bait Dazzle before committing, or use Decisive Strike from close enough that your silence lands before he can stun. Trade in short windows around Shatter and Imbue rather than spinning into his armor aura while he has every cooldown. Save Demacian Justice until after Imbue, because Taric's health swing is the main way he denies your kill.

Later Taric is not a side-lane threat unless very tanky, but he makes front-to-back teamfights harder by stunning divers and adding armor to carries. In a side lane Garen can push him around slowly; in fights, do not waste your full combo into his armor aura if a squishier target is available.

    • Dazzle deals more damage up close, so do not let him choose the stun range for free.
    • Shatter's armor aura directly lowers your E and Q payoff; wait out the active if you can.
    • If he uses Imbue early, that is your best Demacian Justice window.
    • Silencing him before Dazzle is often better than using Q as a finisher.

  • Teemo

    TeemoUnfavoured

Teemo wins if he keeps distance with Move Quick, blinds Garen's Q hit, and bleeds him down with Toxic Shot and mushrooms before an execute window appears.

Watch for Blinding Dart denies Decisive Strike's attack damage and lets Teemo survive the only clean gap-closing trade.

    How to beat

Do not chase through unknown ground; sweep your path mentally around likely Noxious Trap spots and use brush to shorten the lane. Wait for Blinding Dart before committing Q if possible, or use Q mainly for movement and silence him after the blind ends. Once Move Quick is broken by any damage, stay attached for the full Judgment instead of letting him reset spacing.

Later Teemo remains annoying in side lanes because traps and poison keep Perseverance off, but he is fragile if caught without blind. In teamfights, Garen should avoid slow mushroom paths and look for flank angles where Teemo cannot kite from max range.

    • A mushroom hit before the duel often decides it because it removes your passive and your engage speed.
    • If Blinding Dart is down, Teemo is much easier to kill than his lane poke suggests.
    • Do not ult through Wish-like bait does not apply here; ult as soon as poison will not finish you first and he is in range.
    • Breaking Move Quick with Judgment damage makes the chase much more realistic.

  • Tristana

    TristanaUnfavoured

Tristana has too many range and displacement tools for Garen to force a fair melee fight unless Rocket Jump or Buster Shot is already spent.

Watch for Rocket Jump creates distance and slows Garen for 3 seconds, wasting his Decisive Strike window.

    How to beat

Hold fog or brush and make her use Rocket Jump defensively before you spend Q for damage. If she jumps forward or farms carelessly, activate Decisive Strike after the slow or to cover the final gap, then silence before Buster Shot. Do not chase in a straight line once both Rocket Jump and Buster Shot are available; she will reset the fight on her terms.

Later Tristana outscales the side-lane duel if she has room to kite, and she is far more valuable in front-to-back teamfights. Garen should flank, force her jump, and either finish her during the cooldown or turn to zone her away from the fight.

    • Do not Q into Rocket Jump's landing slow unless you are already close enough to connect.
    • Buster Shot can deny Demacian Justice range, so silence before she can cast it.
    • Her passive range scaling makes late duels worse than early ones.
    • If she uses Rocket Jump aggressively, punish immediately; that is the matchup's cleanest window.

  • Tryndamere

    TryndamereUnfavoured

Tryndamere's critical damage and Undying Rage beat Garen's execute pattern unless Garen disengages the ultimate perfectly.

Watch for Undying Rage prevents Demacian Justice from killing him and lets him keep attacking through Garen's strongest finisher.

    How to beat

Trade before he has high Fury, then back off rather than feeding him extended crit windows. Save Decisive Strike to create space after he casts Undying Rage or to silence him before he can use it if he is already low, but do not rely on that against a prepared Tryndamere. Your winning line is to force his ultimate, kite its duration with Q movement, then re-enter when it ends.

Later Tryndamere is the stronger finished side-lane duelist and split-pusher, while Garen has more reliable front-line teamfight presence. Match him only with armor and help nearby; otherwise clear waves, deny towers, and group to force fights before he wins the map alone.

    • Demacian Justice into Undying Rage is the fastest way to lose the duel.
    • His Fury bar matters more than his current health at the start of a trade.
    • Mocking Shout hurts extended auto trades, so rely on spell damage and disengage timing.
    • Use Q speed after he ults, not before, if you need to survive the five-second window.

  • Twisted Fate

    Twisted FateFavoured

Twisted Fate can stun and poke, but he is fragile and has no true escape from Garen once Pick A Card is down or silenced.

Watch for Gold Card from Pick A Card stuns Garen and interrupts the engage long enough for Twisted Fate to kite back.

    How to beat

Watch the card cycle and do not run in during a held Gold Card unless you can silence before the attack lands. After he throws the card or uses Wild Cards on the wave, close with Decisive Strike and stay in melee for the full Judgment. His Gate and Destiny do not win the duel directly, so punish him when those macro tools leave him alone in lane.

Later Twisted Fate avoids honest side-lane duels by using Gate and Destiny to create numbers elsewhere. Garen wins if he catches him, but in teamfights you need to stop his stun card from peeling you off the real target.

    • A held Gold Card is a stop sign; wait it out or approach from fog.
    • Silence prevents him from locking or throwing the next card during your burst.
    • Do not let Wild Cards poke repeatedly reset Perseverance before you engage.
    • If Gate is down, he is much easier to punish in the long lane.

  • Twitch

    TwitchUnfavoured

Twitch wins open-space duels by opening from invisibility, slowing Garen, stacking poison, and using Spray and Pray before Garen can stay in melee.

Watch for Ambush lets Twitch choose the start of the fight and unload poison stacks before Garen can silence him.

    How to beat

Avoid starting fights when Twitch is missing from vision; if he opens first, use Decisive Strike to cleanse the Venom Cask slow and close only if you can actually reach him. Force Ambush or Spray and Pray defensively, then disengage until the steroid ends before re-entering. If you catch him revealed and close, silence immediately so he cannot slow and kite before Judgment ticks.

Later Twitch is far more dangerous in teamfights than in visible side-lane scraps because Spray and Pray can shred multiple targets. Garen should control flanks and punish him after he reveals, but should not blindly chase into poison stacks while the ultimate is active.

    • If Twitch starts the duel from Ambush, assume you are already behind on health.
    • Q can break the Venom Cask slow, but it does not matter if he is still outside melee range.
    • Spray and Pray is a disengage timer for you unless Twitch is already silenced and trapped.
    • Armor helps, but vision and reveal timing decide more than raw stats.

  • Vayne

    VayneUnfavoured

Vayne is one of Garen's worst 1v1s because Tumble, Condemn, Final Hour invisibility, and Silver Bolts punish his low-mobility melee pattern.

Watch for Condemn knocks Garen out of melee range and can stun him against terrain, ending his Decisive Strike commit.

    How to beat

Never give her a wall angle; approach diagonally through open space or from brush so Condemn cannot stun. Try to bait Tumble first, then use Decisive Strike to cover the second gap and silence before she can Condemn. If Final Hour is active and she still has Condemn, disengage unless she is already low enough to execute immediately.

Later Vayne wins the finished side-lane duel in open space and also shreds tanks in teamfights if left untouched. Garen's role is to flank from fog, force Condemn, and zone her movement rather than walking straight at her through her team.

    • Wall position decides the fight; a terrain stun usually means you lose.
    • Final Hour invisibility during Tumble makes tracking your Judgment path unreliable.
    • Do not ult before Silver Bolts and kiting have stopped unless she cannot leave range.
    • Randuin's active is valuable because it creates one real melee window.

  • Veigar

    VeigarEven

Garen kills Veigar quickly if he reaches him, but Event Horizon and Veigar's burst can punish a predictable straight-line engage.

Watch for Event Horizon cages the approach and stuns Garen if he crosses the perimeter, setting up Dark Matter and Primordial Burst.

    How to beat

Do not run directly through Event Horizon; stop inside or outside the edge and wait for the stun threat to pass. Use Decisive Strike after the cage is down, then silence him before he can layer Q, W, and R. Veigar's ultimate scales especially with AP targets, so Garen is less punished than mages, but the base burst still matters if you enter already poked.

Later Veigar becomes more threatening in teamfights because Event Horizon controls space and punishes clustered engages. In side lane Garen can kill him without cage, but in fights you should flank from angles that make his cage defensive instead of letting him zone your whole team.

    • The cage edge is the danger, not the center; do not panic-walk into the stun.
    • Silencing Veigar after Event Horizon misses usually wins the duel outright.
    • Hexdrinker can deny his low-health burst long enough for Demacian Justice.
    • Dark Matter is avoidable if you do not get stunned first.

  • Warwick

    WarwickUnfavoured

Warwick's self-healing, percent-style bite pattern, attack speed steroid, and suppression make extended melee fights favor him over Garen.

Watch for Infinite Duress suppresses Garen while Warwick deals damage and heals through the moment Garen wants to execute.

    How to beat

Take short Q and E trades, then leave before Eternal Thirst and Hungering Strike undo your damage. Do not fight him low for long, because Blood Scent helps him stick and his sustain is strongest when you are trying to finish. Ideally bait Infinite Duress or buy a cleanse answer, then re-engage after his suppression and heal cycle are spent.

Later Warwick remains a stronger isolated drain duelist unless Garen has the tools to cut healing and cleanse suppression. In teamfights, Warwick's ult is a pick tool; Garen should silence him before he reaches a carry or punish him after he commits.

    • Executioner's Calling matters because Warwick's healing is the duel, not a side detail.
    • Quicksilver Sash can turn Infinite Duress from a kill setup into a wasted cooldown.
    • Do not judge his kill range by his health bar while Hungering Strike is available.
    • If Hunter's Call is active, avoid standing still for an auto-attack duel.

  • Wukong

    WukongEven

The duel is close because both champions want short melee bursts, with Wukong's Decoy and Cyclone deciding whether Garen's Judgment and execute connect cleanly.

Watch for Decoy makes Wukong invisible and can waste Garen's Decisive Strike, Judgment ticks, or Demacian Justice target timing.

    How to beat

Do not instantly dump everything after Nimbus Strike; expect Decoy and follow the real movement instead of spinning on the clone. Trade after Crushing Blow if possible, because the armor reduction makes his next burst much better than yours. If Cyclone is down or used only to disengage, Garen can stay on him and win with silence into full Judgment and execute.

Later Wukong is usually more valuable in teamfights because Cyclone can knock up multiple targets, while Garen is steadier in isolated cleanup. In side lane the matchup stays playable, but in 5v5 Garen should either silence Wukong before Cyclone or save cooldowns to punish him when the spin ends.

    • If Wukong stops moving after trading, it is often Decoy; do not ult the clone timing.
    • Crushing Blow's armor shred makes your next few seconds much worse, so back up after it lands.
    • Your Judgment can still hit him during parts of his trickery if you track his exit path.
    • Silence before Cyclone is the cleanest way to swing the fight.

  • Zilean

    ZileanEven

Garen can kill Zilean if he reaches him twice, but Time Warp and Chronoshift make the first kill attempt unreliable and often turn the duel into a chase.

Watch for Chronoshift revives Zilean after Garen commits Demacian Justice, erasing the execute unless Garen waits it out.

    How to beat

Use brush and side angles to reduce the value of Time Warp's slow, and do not spend Q just to be slowed at max range. Force Chronoshift with your first combo, then back off or stay nearby without wasting Demacian Justice into the revive mark. Re-engage when Chronoshift expires or after he revives with low health and Time Warp is unavailable.

Later Zilean rarely wants a true side-lane duel, but his revive can completely deny Garen's assassination pattern in teamfights. Garen should pressure him or his carry to draw Chronoshift, then swap targets until the revive window ends.

    • Never ult a target visibly protected by Chronoshift unless you are only forcing the revive.
    • Time Warp's slow is the real peel; Q's slow cleanse timing matters more than the damage hit.
    • Double Time Bomb pressure keeps Perseverance off, so do not loiter in poke range.
    • After Rewind, assume another Time Warp or bomb is coming sooner than feels fair.
