Katarina

The Sinister Blade

How this differs from the live game

  • Bouncing Blades (Q) deals damage and marks enemies, Katarina can consume the mark with spells or attacks to deal extra magic damage.
  • Sinister Steel (W) does damage around Katarina and increases her movement speed if the ability hits a champion...

Magic penetration marks are the damage page because Q, W, E and Death Lotus all deal magic damage, while AP marks are weaker per slot. Armor seals cover early auto attacks and minion damage, MR glyphs handle most mid matchups, and AP quints give stronger level 1-6 trades.

  • Shunpo (E) takes points at levels 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
  • Death Lotus (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.

Max Q first for ranged farming and poke, W second for reset-fight area damage and movement speed, and E last because one early point gives the Shunpo access you need. The first three points give poke, wave interaction, and an escape/engage tool before committing to Q max.

Alternative — Max W before Q when the lane is melee or low-threat and you can repeatedly step into waveclear trades without being punished.

Magic penetration marks are still the damage marks because Q, W, E, and Death Lotus deal magic damage; W's bonus AD ratio does not make AP marks better for this bruiser page. The cost versus ordinary Katarina is losing flat AP quints and offensive glyphs, trading lane burst for armor, MR, and health that let you stand in top-lane trades.

This is a 9/21/0 durability page: enough offense for Sorcery, Blast, and Arcane Knowledge, then deep defense for health, resists, Block, Juggernaut, and Honor Guard. Compared to the ordinary 21-point offense Katarina page, it gives up Executioner, Archmage, and extra AP burst to survive melee top lane and reset safely.

Max Q first for safer farming and poke, then W for point-blank trade damage and movement speed, with E maxed last after the early Shunpo point. Take E at level 2 so you can escape or punish, then add W at level 3 for melee wave trades.

Alternative — Max W before Q only into lanes where you can consistently stand in melee range and trade around Sinister Steel's 4-second cooldown.

Matchup against

62 champions, one-on-one
  • Ahri

    AhriUnfavoured

Ahri controls the duel with Charm and Spirit Rush, so Katarina only wins if Ahri wastes her peel or gets caught without dashes.

Watch for Charm: stops Shunpo into Death Lotus and gives Ahri the full return Orb of Deception trade.

    How to beat

Hold just outside Charm range and use Bouncing Blade to make her farm instead of freely fishing for E. Commit only after Charm is down or after she spends Spirit Rush charges aggressively; Shunpo behind or to a minion to dodge the return Orb before channeling Death Lotus.

Later Ahri remains safer in side lane because Spirit Rush lets her disengage, while Katarina is more dangerous in teamfights if Charm is used on someone else. Flank after Ahri shows E, then clean resets instead of starting into her face.

    • Do not Shunpo straight at her while Charm is available.
    • Track Spirit Rush charges; the third dash ending is your real all-in window.
    • Use Shunpo to dodge the return half of Orb of Deception, not just to start damage.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Akali

    AkaliEven

Both assassins can kill each other quickly, but Akali's Twilight Shroud denies clean targeting while Katarina wins if she forces Akali to fight outside it.

Watch for Twilight Shroud: breaks your target access and stalls Death Lotus while Akali waits for Shadow Dance charges.

    How to beat

Trade short with Q and W before she can consume Mark of the Assassin, then back off when the mark is on you. Save Shunpo until she commits with Shadow Dance or steps out of Twilight Shroud; if she drops shroud early, leave it and re-engage when it fades.

Later Akali is stronger in isolated side-lane duels when shroud terrain favors her, but Katarina offers higher reset threat in clustered fights. Bring vision and avoid chasing into fog where Akali can choose the first contact.

    • Do not channel Death Lotus into an active Twilight Shroud unless Akali is revealed and trapped.
    • If Mark of the Assassin is on you, deny the follow-up hit before taking the next trade.
    • Shunpo can answer her Shadow Dance, but spending it first gives her the chase.
    BuyBanshee's VeilTwin ShadowsGuardian Angel
  • Alistar

    AlistarUnfavoured

Alistar is difficult to solo because Pulverize and Headbutt interrupt Katarina's channel and Unbreakable Will blanks most of her damage window.

Watch for Pulverize: knocks you up during Death Lotus and lets Alistar Headbutt you away afterward.

    How to beat

This is usually not a duel you seek; poke only when he is using spells on waves or allies. If he burns Pulverize or Headbutt, you can take a short Q-W-E trade, but never commit Death Lotus into Unbreakable Will unless you are cleaning up after it expires.

Later Alistar does not usually side-lane kill Katarina, but he ruins her teamfight entry with point-blank crowd control. Wait until he uses Pulverize or Headbutt on the frontline, then enter from an angle he cannot instantly peel.

    • Do not Shunpo onto him first in a teamfight; he wants that spacing.
    • Unbreakable Will removes the burst window, so swap targets when he casts it.
    • If Headbutt is down but Pulverize is up, he can still stop Death Lotus.
    BuyMercury's TreadsQuicksilver Sash
  • Amumu

    AmumuUnfavoured

Amumu's Bandage Toss and Curse of the Sad Mummy give him two clean ways to stop Katarina while his sustained tank damage outlasts her burst.

Watch for Curse of the Sad Mummy: stuns you out of Death Lotus and holds you inside Despair and Tantrum damage.

    How to beat

Stay outside Bandage Toss lines and force him to use Q to engage someone else before you enter. In a duel, take brief trades after dodging Bandage Toss, but save Shunpo to leave before Curse or to re-enter after it is spent.

Later Amumu wins extended side-lane fights if he is tanky, but Katarina can win teamfights by entering after Curse of the Sad Mummy is down. Treat his ultimate as the fight timer, not as something you can outplay mid-channel.

    • Do not Death Lotus while his ultimate is available at melee range.
    • Side-step Bandage Toss before Shunpoing in; Shunpo first makes the Q easy.
    • If he misses Q, punish immediately before Tantrum and Despair grind you down.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's VeilQuicksilver Sash
  • Anivia

    AniviaUnfavoured

Anivia's stun, wall, slows, and Rebirth make her very hard for Katarina to finish cleanly in an equal duel.

Watch for Flash Frost: stuns Katarina out of her engage or Death Lotus and sets up doubled Frostbite damage.

    How to beat

Do not enter through the front of Flash Frost; stand off-angle and make Anivia throw Q before you Shunpo. If you pop Rebirth, immediately judge whether you can kill the egg before Glacial Storm and Crystallize trap you, because staying too long lets her second life win the fight.

Later Anivia dominates sieges and controlled terrain, while Katarina is stronger only when fights break open away from her wall and storm. In teamfights, let someone else trigger Flash Frost or Rebirth before you spend your reset tools.

    • Shunpo can cross Crystallize targets, but being walled after Shunpo leaves no escape.
    • Do not count the duel won when Rebirth triggers; the egg is the second health bar.
    • Avoid fighting inside Glacial Storm where Frostbite becomes lethal.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Annie

    AnnieUnfavoured

Annie's instant stun and Tibbers burst punish Katarina's melee commit before Death Lotus can finish the fight.

Watch for Pyromania-stunned Summon: Tibbers: instantly locks Katarina down and front-loads enough damage to win the all-in.

    How to beat

Watch Annie's stun count and refuse all-ins when Pyromania is ready. Bait the stun with movement or a Shunpo back to a minion, then commit during the window before she stacks it again; if Tibbers is down, she is far easier to finish.

Later Annie is less slippery in side lane but far more dangerous in grouped fights because her AoE stun can erase Katarina's entry. Flank after Tibbers or Incinerate stun is spent rather than racing her burst head-on.

    • Her auto range lets her hold stun without casting; respect the charged passive icon.
    • Do not Death Lotus while she has a stun spell ready.
    • After Tibbers is used, her remaining damage is much easier to race.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's VeilQuicksilver Sash
  • Ashe

    AsheFavoured

Ashe can kite Katarina with slows, but she has no reliable answer if Enchanted Crystal Arrow misses or is unavailable.

Watch for Enchanted Crystal Arrow: stuns Katarina before the all-in and lets Ashe create enough distance to kite with Frost Shot.

    How to beat

Approach from fog or behind minions so Volley and Arrow are harder to line up. If Arrow is down or dodged, Shunpo directly onto her and keep enough damage for the finish before Frost Shot spacing drags the fight out.

Later Ashe rarely wins the side lane alone unless she starts with Arrow from long range, but her teamfight utility can stop Katarina's reset chain. Wait for Arrow to be fired, then dive her or the nearest low-health target.

    • Do not run straight down lane into a charged Arrow.
    • Shunpo after Volley if it would otherwise tag you with a slow.
    • Her lack of dash means one clean Shunpo usually decides the duel.
    BuyNinja TabiBoots of SwiftnessGuardian Angel
  • Blitzcrank

    BlitzcrankEven

Blitzcrank can interrupt and burst Katarina if he lands his combo, but he is vulnerable when Rocket Grab or Power Fist are wasted.

Watch for Power Fist: pops Katarina up during Death Lotus and gives Blitzcrank time for Static Field and follow-up damage.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions and make Rocket Grab miss before you ever commit. If he uses Power Fist on a minion or mistimes it, Shunpo in for a quick combo, but back out before Mana Barrier turns the last part of the duel against you.

Later Blitzcrank is not a true side-lane threat unless he lands hook under tower, but he is excellent at stopping obvious teamfight entries. Let him hook or knock up someone else, then enter while his disruption is on cooldown.

    • Mana Barrier means your first lethal-looking combo may not actually kill.
    • Never channel Death Lotus while Power Fist is primed.
    • Minion waves are your best protection against Rocket Grab.
    BuyMercury's TreadsQuicksilver SashGuardian Angel
  • Brand

    BrandEven

Brand can burst Katarina if he lands his stun setup, but he is immobile and dies quickly when Sear or Pillar of Flame misses.

Watch for Sear: stuns only when Blaze is already applied, stopping Katarina's channel and guaranteeing his follow-up spells.

    How to beat

Avoid being tagged by Conflagration or Pillar of Flame before Sear is thrown, because that turns Q into the real danger. Once Sear misses or Brand casts Pillar on the wave, Shunpo in from the side and burst before Pyroclasm gets full value.

Later Brand is stronger in grouped front-to-back fights where Pyroclasm bounces, while Katarina wins messy fights after his stun is gone. Do not dive him while your team is stacked around you, or his ultimate punishes everyone.

    • If Blaze is on you, treat Sear as a stun and stop committing forward.
    • Shunpo can dodge Pillar of Flame's delay if you wait for the marker.
    • Avoid fighting beside minions or allies when Pyroclasm is ready.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Cho'Gath

    Cho'GathUnfavoured

Cho'Gath's silence, knock-up, tank stats, and Feast make it difficult for Katarina to complete a burst combo before being executed.

Watch for Feral Scream: silences Katarina during her engage and prevents Shunpo, Sinister Steel, or Death Lotus from being used on time.

    How to beat

Do not Shunpo into the front of Feral Scream; bait it with footwork or wait until he uses it to farm. If Rupture misses and silence is down, you can take a short trade, but leave before Feast range turns the health race into an execution.

Later Cho'Gath usually wins side-lane durability contests, while Katarina has better cleanup potential if he spends his crowd control on someone else. In teamfights, avoid starting on him and use him as a reset only when he is already low.

    • Feral Scream is worse than Rupture for you because it stops your escape too.
    • Track Feast range; being low near him is not a normal health trade.
    • Do not waste Death Lotus into his full tank health bar unless you are resetting off him.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's VeilQuicksilver Sash
  • Corki

    CorkiEven

Corki can kite with Valkyrie and sustained mixed damage, but Katarina can kill him if she forces the escape before committing Death Lotus.

Watch for Valkyrie: creates distance and leaves damage behind, wasting Katarina's Shunpo engage if used after she commits.

    How to beat

Use Bouncing Blade and movement to make Corki spend Valkyrie defensively, then re-engage when it is down. Do not stand in Gatling Gun while waiting for cooldowns; enter from the side, burst quickly, and Shunpo out if he still has escape.

Later Corki scales into stronger sustained side-lane damage, while Katarina is more explosive in teamfights if he has already used Valkyrie. Look for him after he Valkyries forward or sideways in a fight, not while he is holding it.

    • Do not chase through the full Valkyrie trail.
    • His mixed damage makes pure armor or pure MR less reliable than timing.
    • If Valkyrie is down, Corki is much easier to finish than most carries.
    BuyGuardian AngelBanshee's VeilNinja Tabi
  • Dr. Mundo

    Dr. MundoUnfavoured

Dr. Mundo outlasts Katarina with regeneration, slows her with cleavers, and can turn on Sadism before her burst kills him.

Watch for Sadism: rapidly restores the health Katarina needs to burst through and makes an extended duel unwinnable.

    How to beat

Dodge Infected Cleaver first; if it lands, do not chase because he controls the spacing. Fight only when Sadism is down or when he is already low enough that Death Lotus plus Ignite-style healing reduction would finish him, and keep Shunpo for leaving Burning Agony range.

Later Mundo is much better in the side lane once tank items and Sadism are online, while Katarina should focus teamfight backlines instead of burning cooldowns into him. If he soaks your first rotation, you probably lose the reset opportunity.

    • A landed cleaver turns your engage into his chase.
    • Do not all-in into Sadism unless healing reduction is already applied.
    • Burning Agony makes standing beside him after your combo costly.

Evelynn can choose the first hit with Camouflage, but Katarina's burst and resets can win if she survives the opener and avoids Agony's Embrace.

Watch for Agony's Embrace: chunks and slows Katarina at the start of the fight, making her Death Lotus channel easier to kite or finish through.

    How to beat

Keep the wave close enough that Evelynn cannot freely appear behind you without taking return damage. If she opens with Ravage, answer immediately with Q-W and save Shunpo either to dodge Agony's Embrace or to follow after Dark Frenzy movement speed fades.

Later Evelynn is better at finding isolated picks, while Katarina is better at cleaning visible, committed fights. Buy and play around vision because seeing Evelynn before she chooses the angle changes the matchup more than raw stats do.

    • Do not walk through unwarded river when Evelynn is missing; she decides the first trade there.
    • If Agony's Embrace misses, her all-in loses much of its control.
    • Shunpo to a minion or ally can break her chase after Dark Frenzy procs.

  • Ezreal

    EzrealEven

Ezreal can avoid Katarina's first engage with Arcane Shift, but he is fragile if that escape is forced before the all-in.

Watch for Arcane Shift: dodges Shunpo follow-up and resets the spacing Ezreal needs to kite with Mystic Shot.

    How to beat

Pressure with Bouncing Blade and side movement until Ezreal uses Arcane Shift for poke or panic spacing. Once E is down, Shunpo onto him and commit; avoid taking repeated Mystic Shot hits before the fight, because his passive makes the extended duel worse.

Later Ezreal is safer in side lanes because Arcane Shift and Mystic Shot let him kite, while Katarina is scarier in teamfights after he shifts forward or gets chunked. Do not chase him through open lane unless you have another Shunpo target to extend with.

    • Arcane Shift down is the whole matchup timer.
    • Stand away from low minions so Mystic Shot does not freely lower his cooldowns while poking you.
    • If he channels Trueshot Barrage in vision, Shunpo can punish the lockout.

  • Fiddlesticks

    FiddlesticksUnfavoured

Fiddlesticks has point-click fear, silence, drain sustain, and Crowstorm damage, all of which punish Katarina's need to channel in melee range.

Watch for Terrify: fears Katarina out of Death Lotus and lets Fiddlesticks drain or reposition during her burst window.

    How to beat

Never start Death Lotus while Terrify is available unless you are certain he dies before reacting. Bait Dark Wind or Terrify from the edge, interrupt Drain by leaving range with Shunpo, and commit only after his fear is down or Crowstorm channel has been revealed and avoided.

Later Fiddlesticks is not a preferred side-lane duelist, but in teamfights he can completely deny Katarina's entry with fear and silence. Let Crowstorm and Terrify be spent before you dive, or flank onto someone outside his control radius.

    • Dark Wind silence can stop your combo even without Terrify.
    • Do not stand still in Drain; Shunpo out, then re-enter when it breaks.
    • Crowstorm turns melee range into his damage zone, not yours.

  • Gangplank

    GangplankEven

Gangplank's Parrrley poke and sustained melee damage are dangerous, but he lacks a hard interrupt for Death Lotus unless he wins the health trade first.

Watch for Parrrley: repeatedly chunks Katarina before the all-in and lets Gangplank start the duel with a health lead.

    How to beat

Do not let him farm you with free Parrrley while you wait; trade back with Q when he steps up and use Shunpo only when you can force a real exchange. If Cannon Barrage is used on top of you, leave the zone before channeling Death Lotus, then re-enter once the slow no longer controls the fight.

Later Gangplank can side-lane well with item scaling and Cannon Barrage support, while Katarina has stronger reset threat in clustered fights. In teamfights, avoid opening while Cannon Barrage is covering his backline path.

    • Remove Scurvy does not stop your damage, so it mostly changes his health threshold.
    • Do not Death Lotus inside Cannon Barrage if he can walk out while you are slowed.
    • Short trades are fine, but repeated Parrrley poke makes the final all-in bad.

  • Garen

    GarenUnfavoured

Garen is too durable to one-rotation and his silence plus execute punish Katarina for entering melee range.

Watch for Decisive Strike: the silence stops Shunpo or Death Lotus during the only window where Katarina needs to cast.

    How to beat

Do not Shunpo into him while Decisive Strike is ready; tag him with Bouncing Blade to keep Perseverance down and make him spend Q to reach you. Commit only after he uses Decisive Strike or Judgment on the wave, then take a short trade and leave before Demacian Justice becomes lethal.

Later Garen still wins most side-lane duels because he survives the burst and executes the return trade. In teamfights Katarina should ignore him until resets are available, then use Shunpo to pass through the frontline rather than channeling Death Lotus on him.

    • Keep damaging him occasionally so Perseverance does not erase your poke.
    • If he runs at you with Decisive Strike, Shunpo away instead of trying to ult first.
    • Do not judge the fight by his early health bar; Demacian Justice flips low-health trades.

  • Gragas

    GragasUnfavoured

Gragas can interrupt Death Lotus, displace Katarina out of her damage, and outlast short trades with Happy Hour.

Watch for Explosive Cask: it knocks Katarina out of Death Lotus and turns an all-in into a lost trade.

    How to beat

Hold enough distance that Body Slam has to be used to start the fight, then punish the recovery if it misses or hits minions. Never channel Death Lotus while Explosive Cask is available unless he is already forced to use it defensively or is too low to survive the first daggers.

Later Gragas controls teamfight spacing better and can deny Katarina's reset angle with Explosive Cask. Katarina should flank after he has used Body Slam or Cask on someone else, not front-to-back into his zone.

    • Shunpo can dodge Barrel Roll detonation if you wait for the barrel location.
    • Body Slam is the real green light; without it he cannot easily stop your entry unless he spends ultimate.
    • His passive makes poke-only lanes misleading, so trade in bursts rather than slowly feeding Happy Hour value.

  • Heimerdinger

    HeimerdingerEven

Katarina can kill Heimerdinger if she reaches him cleanly, but his turret nest and grenade punish direct Shunpo entries.

Watch for CH-1 Concussion Grenade: a direct stun stops Death Lotus and lets turrets finish the trade.

    How to beat

Do not duel inside multiple H-28G Evolution Turrets unless Heimerdinger has missed Grenade. Clear or soften turrets with Bouncing Blade and Sinister Steel, then Shunpo onto him after Grenade is down and burst before he can kite through the nest.

Later Heimerdinger is stronger at defending areas, while Katarina is stronger when fights move away from prepared turrets. In teamfights, avoid starting into his setup and wait for crowd control to be spent before cleaning up.

    • Count turrets before committing; one turret is a trade, two or more is his arena.
    • Shunpo behind him can make Grenade harder to land, but only if you have an exit target.
    • His rockets hit nearby targets, so standing alone near him makes poke more reliable for him.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's Veil
  • Janna

    JannaFavoured

In a pure duel Janna lacks damage to kill Katarina, but she can reliably disengage and deny Death Lotus.

Watch for Monsoon: it knocks Katarina out of Death Lotus and resets the spacing Janna wants.

    How to beat

Force Eye Of The Storm with Bouncing Blade and small Shunpo trades rather than opening with Death Lotus. Once Howling Gale or Monsoon is spent, stick close with Shunpo and Sinister Steel; if Monsoon is still ready, treat the ult as a bait instead of the kill button.

Later Janna does not want the side-lane duel, but she is excellent at stopping Katarina in teamfights. Katarina should enter after Monsoon or Howling Gale has been used, or target a carry outside Janna's immediate peel radius.

    • Do not channel Death Lotus into an untouched Monsoon.
    • Shunpo after Howling Gale is released, not while it is charging unseen.
    • Her shield changes trades more than her damage, so wait out Eye Of The Storm when possible.
  • Jarvan IV

    Jarvan IVUnfavoured

Jarvan's knock-up, armor shred, shield, and Cataclysm trap make it difficult for Katarina to control the range of the duel.

Watch for Demacian Standard plus Dragon Strike: the knock-up interrupts Death Lotus and starts Jarvan's winning burst window.

    How to beat

Stay outside the flag-drag line and make him use Dragon Strike before you commit. If he misses the knock-up, Shunpo in for a short burst, but save an exit target for Cataclysm or you can be forced to fight through his shield and passive hit.

Later Jarvan remains favored in side lane when he can trap Katarina and force extended combat. In teamfights, Katarina should use Cataclysm terrain carefully: it can trap her, but it can also group low-health targets for a reset if Jarvan has already spent his control.

    • Do not Death Lotus until the flag-drag combo is down.
    • His Martial Cadence makes the first hit of every trade hurt more than expected.
    • If Cataclysm isolates you without a Shunpo target outside, the duel usually belongs to him.

  • Jax

    JaxUnfavoured

Jax survives Katarina's area damage with Counter Strike reduction and wins extended melee trades with Leap Strike, Empower, and Grandmaster's Might.

Watch for Counter Strike: it reduces Death Lotus and Sinister Steel damage while setting up his stun window.

    How to beat

Do not full-combo into Counter Strike; poke with Bouncing Blade and back away when he activates it. Commit only after Counter Strike ends or is baited out, then burst quickly and disengage before his attack speed ramp turns the fight into a sustained duel.

Later Jax outscales Katarina heavily in side lane and becomes a poor solo target unless already low. Katarina is better in teamfights if she avoids his stun and uses resets on squishier targets before Jax can stick to her.

    • Shunpo away when Counter Strike starts instead of trying to finish the channel.
    • His Leap Strike follows your retreat, so keep a ward, minion, or ally as a second Shunpo target.
    • Short trades are acceptable; long trades are Jax's win condition.

  • Karthus

    KarthusFavoured

Katarina can dodge Lay Waste with Shunpo and burst Karthus before his sustained Defile damage wins the fight.

Watch for Death Defied: killing him does not end the danger, and his post-death spells can punish a greedy reset.

    How to beat

Move unpredictably around Lay Waste and use Shunpo to dodge Wall of Pain or close after he misses Q. Burst him quickly, then leave his corpse range immediately instead of standing in Defile or eating free Lay Waste casts.

Later Katarina still threatens Karthus in side lane, but teamfights are dangerous because killing him can leave his passive in the middle of the fight. Take the reset, then Shunpo out or onto a target away from Death Defied before Requiem and Defile finish you.

    • Do not stand still during Death Lotus if he has clean Lay Waste placement under you.
    • After he dies, treat the corpse as an active mage, not a finished target.
    • Wall of Pain makes chasing costly, so enter from the side rather than through it.

  • Kassadin

    KassadinUnfavoured

Kassadin resists Katarina's magic damage, silences her channel, and can match or escape Shunpo with Riftwalk.

Watch for Null Sphere: the silence cancels Death Lotus and can prevent the follow-up spell chain Katarina needs.

    How to beat

Do not start with Death Lotus while Null Sphere is ready; force it with a Shunpo or Bouncing Blade trade, then back out. Your commit window is after Null Sphere is down and before Riftwalk stacks or Force Pulse let him turn the fight, so make the all-in short and decisive.

Later Kassadin becomes much harder to pin down in side lane and can choose when the duel happens. In teamfights, Katarina should wait for him to spend Null Sphere or Riftwalk aggressively, then punish his backline rather than chasing him through multiple blinks.

    • His passive makes your burst math worse than it looks against other mages.
    • A canceled Death Lotus usually means the trade is lost; bait Null Sphere first.
    • Do not chase repeated Riftwalks unless a reset is guaranteed.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsAbyssal Scepter
  • Kayle

    KayleUnfavoured

Kayle can kite Katarina with Reckoning and Righteous Fury, then invalidate the kill window with Intervention.

Watch for Intervention: it wastes Katarina's burst and Death Lotus during the exact seconds she needs a reset.

    How to beat

Stay out of extended Righteous Fury auto range and use Bouncing Blade to force Kayle to heal or shield her health bar with Intervention. Commit only after Intervention is down, or open lightly to bait it and Shunpo away before re-engaging.

Later Kayle wins many side-lane duels once her ranged uptime and ultimate are strong enough to survive Katarina's combo. In teamfights, Katarina must track Intervention and avoid ulting the protected target; wait for Kayle to use it, then reset through someone else.

    • If she casts Intervention during Death Lotus, stop thinking kill and start thinking exit.
    • Reckoning's slow makes disengage hard, so keep Shunpo for after it lands.
    • Do not trade autos during Righteous Fury; your advantage is burst timing.

  • Kennen

    KennenUnfavoured

Kennen outranges Katarina, stacks Mark of the Storm to stun her, and can fight inside Death Lotus with Slicing Maelstrom.

Watch for Mark of the Storm stun: the third mark interrupts Death Lotus and gives Kennen time to unload his combo.

    How to beat

Track your marks before committing; if you already have one or two, back off until they expire. Shunpo in only after Thundering Shuriken or Lightning Rush is down, burst quickly, and leave before Slicing Maelstrom stacks enough marks to stun you.

Later Kennen is stronger in grouped fights when his ultimate covers the same area Katarina wants to enter. Katarina should flank late, wait for Slicing Maelstrom or the first stun wave to pass, then clean up targets outside his storm.

    • Do not Death Lotus at two marks unless you know he cannot add the third immediately.
    • Lightning Rush is both his escape and mark delivery; punish it after it ends.
    • Shunpo can dodge Thundering Shuriken, but it can also put you in ultimate range.

  • Kog'Maw

    Kog'MawFavoured

Kog'Maw has little hard control, so Katarina wins if she gets through Void Ooze and reaches him before Bio-Arcane Barrage burns her down.

Watch for Void Ooze: the slow denies Katarina's approach and gives Kog'Maw time to kite with Bio-Arcane Barrage.

    How to beat

Do not walk through Void Ooze from max range; approach from fog or Shunpo over the slow line once he commits it. Kill him quickly, then Shunpo away from Icathian Surprise instead of lingering for extra damage or minions.

Later Kog'Maw is terrifying in teamfights if protected, but he still loses the isolated duel when Katarina reaches him. Katarina's job late is to find a flank after peel is used, burst him, and immediately escape the passive explosion.

    • His passive can trade the kill back, so plan the exit before the all-in.
    • Bio-Arcane Barrage range means you cannot slowly close from the front.
    • If Void Ooze is down, he has no reliable way to stop Shunpo into Death Lotus by himself.

  • Lee Sin

    Lee SinUnfavoured

Lee Sin has stronger early dueling, reveals Katarina, shields damage, and can kick her out of Death Lotus.

Watch for Dragon's Rage: it cancels Death Lotus and creates distance after Katarina has spent her entry.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions to make Sonic Wave unreliable and avoid giving him a clean Resonating Strike execute. If he misses Q or uses Safeguard forward, take a quick combo, but do not channel Death Lotus until Dragon's Rage is down or he is unable to cast it.

Later Lee Sin's side-lane threat drops later, but his kick still ruins Katarina's teamfight entry. Katarina can out-impact him in late fights if she waits out Dragon's Rage and uses resets after Lee has committed to another target.

    • Never let Sonic Wave mark you for free before you all-in.
    • Tempest reveal can deny brush jukes after Shunpo, so do not rely on fog once he is in range.
    • A Lee Sin with Safeguard available can turn your burst into a shielded countertrade.

  • Leona

    LeonaEven

Leona usually cannot kill Katarina quickly alone, but her layered stuns can completely shut down Death Lotus.

Watch for Shield of Daybreak: the point-blank stun cancels Death Lotus after Katarina enters melee range.

    How to beat

This duel is mostly about patience: poke when Eclipse is down and avoid starting with Death Lotus into her ready Q. If she misses Zenith Blade or spends Shield of Daybreak, you can trade aggressively, but leave before Eclipse's resistances and repeated crowd control drag the fight out.

Later Leona is rarely a side-lane duelist, but in teamfights she is one of the cleanest answers to Katarina. Enter after Solar Flare or Shield of Daybreak is used, or hit a target outside Leona's stun range.

    • Do not Shunpo directly onto her while Shield of Daybreak is primed.
    • Eclipse makes your first burst look weak, so wait it out if possible.

  • Lulu

    LuluUnfavoured

Lulu's polymorph, shield, slow, and Wild Growth all deny Katarina's burst window despite Lulu's low solo kill threat.

Watch for Whimsy: polymorph prevents Katarina from casting and can stop the entire all-in after Shunpo.

    How to beat

Bait Whimsy with a short Shunpo trade or by threatening the all-in, then disengage before Glitterlance keeps you in range. Commit only when Whimsy is down and be ready to swap targets or leave if Wild Growth absorbs your burst.

Later Lulu does not want the isolated duel, but she becomes a major teamfight problem because she can save Katarina's target and disable Katarina on entry. Wait for Whimsy or Wild Growth to be used on someone else before committing Death Lotus.

    • A shielded Wild Growth target is usually the wrong reset target.
    • Polymorph is more dangerous than her damage; track that cooldown first.
    • Do not chase through Glitterlance slow unless Shunpo is ready again.

  • Lux

    LuxEven

Katarina wins if she dodges Light Binding, but Lux wins cleanly if the bind lands before or during Katarina's entry.

Watch for Light Binding: the root stops Katarina in place and sets up Lux's full combo before Katarina can finish her burst.

    How to beat

Hover outside the minion angle where Light Binding can tag you through the wave, then Shunpo in after it misses or is used for waveclear. Once her Q is down, close fast and burst through Prismatic Barrier before Finales Funkeln can finish the trade.

Later Lux is weak in side-lane duels without Light Binding, but in teamfights she can root Katarina as she enters and shield the target being reset on. Katarina should attack from fog or a flank, not from the same line Lux is already aiming at.

    • Do not Shunpo predictably in a straight line after she holds Light Binding.
    • Lucent Singularity slow makes walking out hard, so save Shunpo for repositioning after the burst.

  • Malphite

    MalphiteUnfavoured

Malphite's shield, tank stats, movement steal, and knock-up make him difficult to burst and easy for him to interrupt.

Watch for Unstoppable Force: the knock-up cancels Death Lotus and starts Malphite's guaranteed return damage.

    How to beat

Break Granite Shield with Bouncing Blade before taking any real trade, then wait for Seismic Shard or Ground Slam to be used before stepping close. Do not Death Lotus while Unstoppable Force is available unless he is already too low to survive or has used it to engage elsewhere.

Later Malphite wins the side-lane duel by surviving burst and forcing extended trades, while Katarina is more valuable cleaning up after his engage cooldowns are spent. In teamfights, stay outside his initial ultimate angle and enter after he knocks up someone else.

    • Never full-combo into Granite Shield if you can remove it first.
    • Seismic Shard steals the movement you need to kite out, so Shunpo after it rather than before it.
    • Ground Slam's attack speed reduction is not the issue for Katarina; the problem is that it keeps him winning the close-range brawl.

Malzahar wins the clean duel because Nether Grasp stops Death Lotus and holds Katarina inside Null Zone and Malefic Visions damage.

Watch for Nether Grasp: suppresses you during your commit and cancels Death Lotus.

    How to beat

Stay outside his ult range until he spends Call of the Void or uses Nether Grasp on someone else. Poke with Bouncing Blade, Shunpo out after short trades, and only all-in when his suppression is unavailable or you have a cleanse item ready.

Later Malzahar is still stronger in a side-lane duel if Nether Grasp is up, but Katarina is more explosive in messy teamfights after he commits it. Enter late, force him to ult another target, then clean up with Voracity resets.

    • Do not Shunpo directly onto him while Nether Grasp is ready.
    • Call of the Void silence can also interrupt Death Lotus, so wait for the portal cast if possible.

    Master YiEven

Katarina can burst Master Yi before he ramps, but Alpha Strike and Meditate give him tools to dodge or soak her key damage.

Watch for Meditate: heavily reduces your burst window and can stall out Death Lotus damage.

    How to beat

Do not open with Death Lotus while Alpha Strike is available, because he can disappear during the channel. Trade with Q and W, bait Alpha Strike or Meditate, then Shunpo back in once he has no dodge or damage reduction left.

Later Finished Yi is more dangerous in the side lane if he gets uninterrupted attacks, while Katarina is better at punishing clustered fights. Avoid isolated extended duels and look for resets after Yi has used Highlander or Alpha Strike.

    • Hold Shunpo until after Alpha Strike lands so you can reposition instead of losing target time.
    • If he starts Meditate during your burst, stop committing and wait it out.
    • Death Lotus is strongest when Alpha Strike has just been used on minions or you.

  • Miss Fortune

    Miss FortuneFavoured

Miss Fortune has huge channeled damage, but Katarina can reach her quickly and Death Lotus punishes her lack of hard crowd control.

Watch for Bullet Time: can outdamage your engage if you stand in the cone or commit from the front.

    How to beat

Approach from the side, not through Make It Rain and Bullet Time. Use Shunpo to get behind or beside her, then unload Q-W-R once Double Up poke has not already put you too low.

Later Katarina wins the side-lane duel if she reaches Miss Fortune, but Miss Fortune is dangerous in front-to-back teamfights. Wait for Bullet Time to start or be interrupted, then Shunpo past the frontline onto her.

    • Do not chase through Make It Rain if it lets her kite into Bullet Time.
    • Shunpo can move you out of Bullet Time's cone while staying in kill range.
    • Strut makes her hard to catch before combat, so use minions or allies as Shunpo anchors.

  • Morgana

    MorganaUnfavoured

Morgana denies Katarina's burst pattern with Black Shield, Dark Binding, and Soul Shackles forcing Katarina out of her channel.

Watch for Black Shield: blocks your magic burst and prevents the disable portion of allied setup from helping your all-in.

    How to beat

Do not spend your full combo into Black Shield unless it is already low. Bait Dark Binding from max range, Shunpo after it misses, and use short trades until Black Shield is down before channeling Death Lotus.

Later Morgana is harder to solo kill late because Black Shield and Zhonya-style stalling ruin Katarina's timing, but Katarina can still win teamfights by attacking targets outside the shield. Track who receives Black Shield and switch targets instantly.

    • A missed Dark Binding is your best engage window.
    • Soul Shackles punishes staying in Death Lotus too long near her.
    • If Black Shield is on Morgana, kill someone else instead of forcing the duel.

Nasus survives Katarina's burst with health and lifesteal, then wins the extended fight with Wither, Siphoning Strike, and Fury of the Sands.

Watch for Wither: slows your escape after Shunpo and forces you to fight inside his ultimate.

    How to beat

Keep trades short and never stand next to him after Wither starts ramping. Poke with Bouncing Blade, Shunpo to a minion or ward to leave, and only commit if he is already low or Fury of the Sands is down.

Later Nasus wins the side lane once stacked and finished, while Katarina is far better in teamfights against his backline. Do not match him alone late; clear waves safely and look for resets away from his Wither range.

    • Do not ult while Fury of the Sands is ticking unless he is already killable.
    • Wither makes walking out impossible, so preserve a Shunpo exit.
    • His sustain means chip damage matters less unless you can finish the kill immediately.

  • Nidalee

    NidaleeEven

The duel hinges on whether Katarina dodges Javelin Toss and catches Nidalee after her heal or cougar escape is committed.

Watch for Javelin Toss: long-range damage that can make you too low to all-in before the fight starts.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions and do not take a spear before committing. If she uses Primal Surge early or swaps to cougar aggressively, Shunpo in after Pounce and force the close-range burst before she can reset distance.

Later Nidalee controls side lanes better with poke, traps, and mobility, while Katarina is stronger in clustered cleanup fights. Avoid blind jungle paths where Bushwhack and spears soften you before the engage.

    • A max-range spear usually means you lost the duel before it began.
    • Bushwhack's resistance shred makes her cougar all-in much scarier.
    • Use Shunpo after Pounce, not before, or she simply creates distance again.

  • Nunu & Willump

    Nunu & WillumpEven

Nunu is hard for Katarina to kill through Ice Blast, Consume sustain near minions, and Absolute Zero, but he rarely kills her quickly without trapping her in the channel.

Watch for Absolute Zero: slows you inside the area and forces Shunpo or a cancel before the burst lands.

    How to beat

Fight away from minion waves and jungle camps so Consume cannot reset his health. Bait Ice Blast, use Shunpo to leave Absolute Zero, then re-enter after the channel is broken or wasted.

Later Nunu is not a true side-lane duelist, but he can stall Katarina and make teamfight entries miserable with slows. In late fights, wait for Absolute Zero or Ice Blast to be used before committing to Death Lotus.

    • Do not duel him next to a large minion wave if Consume is ready.
    • Save Shunpo for Absolute Zero unless he is already dead.

  • Olaf

    OlafUnfavoured

Olaf wins extended melee fights because Ragnarok prevents control, Undertow keeps Katarina in range, and Reckless Swing cuts through her defenses.

Watch for Ragnarok: lets Olaf ignore interruption and run through your burst window with bonus defenses.

    How to beat

Do not all-in while Ragnarok is active unless Olaf is already very low. Poke from the edge of Bouncing Blade, dodge Undertow, and use Shunpo defensively after he throws axe rather than starting a long melee fight.

Later Olaf wins the side lane and can run Katarina down if she is isolated, but Katarina can still carry teamfights by avoiding him and killing his backline. Let him use Ragnarok into your frontline, then enter after he has passed through.

    • Reckless Swing makes low-health baiting risky because it deals true damage.

    PantheonUnfavoured

Pantheon beats Katarina early and in equal duels because Aegis of Zeonia stops her channel and Heartseeker Strike punishes her after she jumps in.

Watch for Aegis of Zeonia: point-and-click stun that cancels Death Lotus and sets up Heartseeker Strike.

    How to beat

Do not Shunpo in while his stun is ready. Take short Q poke, wait for him to use Aegis of Zeonia or waste Heartseeker Strike, then commit only when his passive block and stun are both down.

Later Katarina scales better in teamfights, but Pantheon can still delete her if he holds stun. In late fights, never be first in; let him stun someone else before using Death Lotus.

    • His passive blocks attacks, not your spell burst, but it can absorb incidental Shunpo follow-up autos.
    • If Heartseeker Strike starts after his stun, Shunpo out of the cone immediately.
    • Grand Skyfall matters more for joining fights than for the 1v1 itself.

  • Rammus

    RammusUnfavoured

Rammus is a bad duel because Puncturing Taunt cancels Katarina's plan and Defensive Ball Curl makes him too durable to burst cleanly.

Watch for Puncturing Taunt: forces you to attack him, cancels Death Lotus, and keeps you inside Tremors.

    How to beat

Avoid dueling him unless Taunt is down or you have a cleanse effect. Poke lightly, do not spend full damage into Defensive Ball Curl, and use Shunpo to leave after Powerball misses.

Later Rammus usually will not side-lane kill Katarina quickly, but she also struggles to kill him. In teamfights, ignore him unless he has already used Taunt and dive the backline from a different angle.

    • Defensive Ball Curl is the wrong window to burst into.
    • Powerball collision sets up Taunt, so keep a Shunpo target behind you.
    • A cleanse item is more valuable than extra damage in this specific fight.
    BuyQuicksilver SashMercury's Treads
  • Ryze

    RyzeUnfavoured

Ryze's instant Rune Prison locks Katarina during her engage, and his low-cooldown spell rotation outtrades her if she cannot finish immediately.

Watch for Rune Prison: roots you in place and interrupts the movement plan after Shunpo.

    How to beat

Stay just outside Rune Prison range and look for Bouncing Blade poke before committing. If he uses Rune Prison on a minion wave fight or another target, Shunpo in fast and burst before Arcane Mastery cycles his spells again.

Later Ryze is stronger in direct side-lane duels once tanky and finished, while Katarina is better at cleaning chaotic fights where he cannot focus her first. Enter late and avoid being the first target he roots.

    • Do not start Death Lotus when Rune Prison is available and he is facing you.
    • Spell Flux reducing magic resist makes the second half of his combo much worse.
    • Banshee's Veil can block the first root and create a real engage window.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsTwin Shadows
  • Shaco

    ShacoEven

Shaco can dodge and disrupt Katarina with Deceive, Jack In The Box, and Hallucinate, but he dies quickly if caught without those tricks.

Watch for Jack In The Box: fears you during the all-in and can interrupt Death Lotus in tight spaces.

    How to beat

Do not chase through unwarded boxes or fog after he uses Deceive. Force him to reveal first, tag him with Bouncing Blade, and commit only after Jack In The Box fear or Hallucinate has been accounted for.

Later Shaco is better at isolated picks and split pressure, while Katarina is much stronger in grouped fights if she avoids box traps. Carry detection and use Shunpo targets to escape clone explosions or ambush angles.

    • If he Deceives before you commit, wait for the backstab attempt instead of guessing.
    • Do not ult beside a fresh Jack In The Box.
    • Hallucinate can waste your burst, so watch which Shaco takes real movement commands.

  • Shen

    ShenUnfavoured

Shen is too durable for Katarina to burst cleanly and Shadow Dash stops Death Lotus while forcing her into a longer fight.

Watch for Shadow Dash: taunts you out of Death Lotus and pins you near Shen's follow-up damage.

    How to beat

Stay off his dash line and poke with Bouncing Blade until Feint is gone. Commit only after Shadow Dash misses or is used defensively, then take the burst trade and leave before Vorpal Blade sustain drags the fight out.

Later Shen usually wins or stalemates the side lane and affects the map with Stand United, while Katarina wants grouped fights where his taunt is already spent. If he ults away, shove or follow the fight late for resets rather than trying to cancel it alone.

    • Do not ult until Shadow Dash is down.
    • Feint can absorb just enough damage to deny your reset timing.
    • Stand United turns nearby skirmishes against you, so account for the shield even in a duel-adjacent fight.
    BuyQuicksilver SashRylai's Crystal Scepter
  • Singed

    SingedUnfavoured

Singed wins by refusing a clean burst duel, Flinging Katarina into Poison Trail and outlasting her with Insanity Potion stats.

Watch for Fling: throws you behind him, breaks your positioning, and leaves you chasing through Poison Trail.

    How to beat

Do not chase him in a straight line. Poke when he comes forward, save Shunpo for after Fling or Mega Adhesive, and only all-in when Insanity Potion is down or he is already low enough to die during your first rotation.

Later Singed is much better in the side lane because he clears and kites forever, while Katarina is stronger when she can ignore him and reset through carries. In teamfights, do not spend Death Lotus on Singed unless his disruption is already gone.

    • Chasing through Poison Trail is how he wins even when behind.
    • Mega Adhesive can deny the spacing you need after Shunpo.
    • If he activates Insanity Potion before you commit, wait it out or change targets.
    BuyRylai's Crystal ScepterSpirit Visage
  • Sion

    SionUnfavoured

Sion's point-and-click Cryptic Gaze and Death's Caress shield deny Katarina's burst, then his sustained attacks take over.

Watch for Cryptic Gaze: stuns you on entry and cancels Death Lotus before your damage finishes.

    How to beat

Do not all-in while his stun and shield are both available. Break or wait out Death's Caress first, bait Cryptic Gaze if possible, then burst during the gap before he can shield again.

Later AD Sion wins the side-lane duel if he reaches you with Cannibalism running, while Katarina is better at deleting squishier targets in teamfights. Avoid being his first stun target and enter after he has committed onto someone else.

    • Death's Caress must be respected because it can absorb your reset threshold.
    • Cannibalism makes extended trades unwinnable.
    • Mercury's Treads reduce the stun window but do not make the matchup easy.
    BuyMercury's TreadsZhonya's HourglassSeeker's Armguard
  • Sivir

    SivirEven

Katarina can kill Sivir if she gets past Spell Shield, but Sivir can block a key spell and kite with On The Hunt.

Watch for Spell Shield: blocks one part of your burst and can deny the damage needed for a reset.

    How to beat

Throw Bouncing Blade or use a low-commitment spell to trigger Spell Shield before the real all-in. Once it is down, Shunpo in from an angle that avoids both passes of Boomerang Blade and channel Death Lotus before On The Hunt creates distance.

Later Sivir is safer in grouped late fights because her team speed and Spell Shield punish obvious dives, while Katarina remains better at cleanup if Sivir's shield is down. In side lane, Katarina wins if she starts close and does not waste her first spell into Spell Shield.

    • Do not open with your most important damage into Spell Shield.
    • Boomerang Blade hurts twice, so dodge sideways after Shunpo.
    • On The Hunt can turn a winning duel into a chase you cannot finish.
    BuyZhonya's Hourglass
  • Skarner

    SkarnerUnfavoured

Skarner is too durable to burst from full and Impale cleanly stops Death Lotus or drags Katarina into a losing extended fight.

Watch for Impale suppresses Katarina and cancels Death Lotus, removing her main kill window.

    How to beat

Do not Shunpo into him while Impale is available unless he is already low enough to die to Q-W-E without relying on the full channel. Kite around minions with Bouncing Blade and wait for Crystalline Exoskeleton to break or expire before committing. If he uses Impale on someone else in a skirmish, that is your reset window.

Later Skarner wins the side lane if he can force long trades, while Katarina is much better cleaning up teamfights after his suppression is spent. Stay outside his flash-Impale range and enter after he has used it or after your team has forced him low.

    • Shunpo's damage reduction helps during his Q spam, but it does not solve the suppression.
    • Breaking Crystalline Exoskeleton removes much of his chase; do not all-in through the shield.
    • If he holds Impale only for you, play the fight as a second-entry assassin, not the opener.
    BuyQuicksilver SashBanshee's Veil
  • Sona

    SonaFavoured

Sona is fragile and cannot survive Katarina's full burst unless Crescendo interrupts the all-in at the start.

Watch for Crescendo stuns Katarina and cancels Death Lotus before it deals enough damage.

    How to beat

Stay out of her poke rhythm until you are ready to kill, then Shunpo after she has used Crescendo or when she is isolated enough that one rotation forces it late. If Crescendo is up, bait it with a short Q-E-W trade and back out rather than channeling immediately. Once it is down, she has no real dueling answer.

Later Sona does not want the side lane duel, but she can decide teamfights by interrupting your first engage. Flank from fog and wait until Crescendo is used or aimed at your frontline before taking resets.

    • Track Power Chord before trading; the damage-reduction chord can blunt your first burst.
    • Do not Death Lotus point-blank into a held Crescendo.
    • Her aura defenses matter less when she is alone, so punish warding paths and rotations.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's Veil
  • Soraka

    SorakaEven

Katarina can kill Soraka if she gets on top of her after Infuse, but silence plus Wish can deny the reset and turn the duel into a drawn-out failure.

Watch for Infuse silences Katarina, stopping Shunpo follow-up and preventing Death Lotus during the key burst window.

    How to beat

Do not start with Death Lotus while Infuse is ready. Use Q and W pressure to make her spend silence defensively, then Shunpo in as it ends and finish before Wish can buy enough time. If she casts Wish early, reset the trade and re-enter after her health advantage is gone.

Later Soraka rarely takes the honest duel, but her global Wish and silence are major reset denial in teamfights. Katarina should avoid being the first target revealed and look for Soraka after Infuse or Wish has been committed.

    • Infuse is the matchup; without it she cannot stop your channel.
    • Starcall's MR shred punishes staying in melee after your burst fails.
    • Wish can deny Voracity timing, so do not count a low-health target as dead until it is actually dead.
    BuyMercury's TreadsMorellonomicon
  • Taric

    TaricUnfavoured

Taric's point-click stun, armor aura, heal, and melee durability make him hard for Katarina to burst and easy for him to interrupt.

Watch for Dazzle stuns Katarina and cancels Death Lotus on demand.

    How to beat

Keep the fight short and do not channel Death Lotus until Dazzle is down. Poke with Bouncing Blade, Shunpo in only for a quick W, then leave before his sustained melee trades and Imbue undo the damage. Commit only when he is already chipped or after he uses Dazzle on another target.

Later Taric is not a scary side-lane killer, but he is excellent at standing near carries and holding Dazzle for your engage. In teamfights, force him to peel someone else or enter from an angle where he cannot instantly stun you.

    • His Shatter armor does not stop your magic burst, but it signals he is ready to stand and trade.
    • Dazzle is more dangerous than his damage; respect the interrupt.
    • If he saves Dazzle for Death Lotus, win by baiting it with Shunpo-W instead of ulting immediately.
    BuyMercury's Treads
  • Teemo

    TeemoEven

Katarina can burst Teemo if she reaches him cleanly, but blind, poison, Move Quick spacing, and mushrooms make the approach unreliable.

Watch for Noxious Trap slows and damages Katarina, breaking the clean Shunpo-in kill path and making retreat dangerous.

    How to beat

Do not chase through unwarded brush or obvious mushroom lines. Use Bouncing Blade to break Move Quick's passive speed before looking for Shunpo, and commit only when you know the ground behind him is safe enough to finish. Blinding Dart matters less than against auto attackers, so the real discipline is avoiding trap damage before the all-in.

Later Teemo can control side-lane paths with mushrooms, but Katarina is far more threatening in teamfights if she avoids entering through trapped flanks. Buy detection through the team and fight from cleared angles rather than guessing through poison fields.

    • Hit him with Q before Shunpo if possible so Move Quick is disabled.
    • Do not follow his retreat path blindly; he wants you to step on traps during Death Lotus or after it.
    • Camouflage makes face-checking side brush unusually punishing for Katarina.
    BuyMercury's TreadsSightstone
  • Tristana

    TristanaUnfavoured

Tristana has enough range and disengage to deny Katarina's channel with Buster Shot or Rocket Jump away from the all-in.

Watch for Buster Shot knocks Katarina out of Death Lotus and resets the spacing Tristana wants.

    How to beat

Do not spend Shunpo just to enter from max range while both Rocket Jump and Buster Shot are available. Bait Rocket Jump with Q pressure or a short Shunpo trade, then re-engage before it comes back. If Buster Shot is up, expect your first Death Lotus to be canceled and hold it until she uses the knockback or is forced into a wall of your team's pressure.

Later Tristana becomes a much harder side-lane target as her range scales, and she can shred Katarina before she gets a second rotation. In teamfights, Katarina should wait for Tristana's displacement to be used or dive a different low-health target first to trigger resets.

    • Rocket Jump's landing slow can keep you in her auto range after your burst.
    • Buster Shot is an ultimate-for-ultimate denial; do not hand it your whole channel.
    • Late levels make walking at her worse because Draw a Bead gives her more room to kite.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassNinja Tabi
  • Tryndamere

    TryndamereUnfavoured

Tryndamere survives Katarina's burst with Undying Rage and then wins the extended melee fight with crits and chase.

Watch for Undying Rage prevents lethal damage, denying Voracity and forcing Katarina to wait out his strongest seconds.

    How to beat

Never commit your full combo from full health if Undying Rage is ready; you will spend everything and get chased down. Poke with Q and W, save Shunpo to escape Spinning Slash, and only re-enter after Undying Rage is ending. If he uses Spinning Slash forward before ult, you can briefly trade and leave, but do not stand in auto range afterward.

Later Tryndamere is the stronger side-lane duelist and split pusher once finished. Katarina should avoid matching him alone and instead punish the 5v4, saving burst until Undying Rage or his escape is forced.

    • Do not chase the last sliver of health during Undying Rage; that is how he wins.
    • Mocking Shout's AD reduction is mostly irrelevant to your damage, but the slow can keep you in crit range.
    • Shunpo to a minion or ally as his ultimate ends so you can re-enter safely if he overextends.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassNinja TabiRanduin's Omen
  • Twisted Fate

    Twisted FateEven

Katarina wins if she dodges or outwaits Gold Card, but Twisted Fate can stun her and unload Wild Cards before she finishes the kill.

Watch for Pick A Card Gold Card stuns Katarina and cancels Death Lotus or stops her first Shunpo follow-up.

    How to beat

Hover outside his auto range while watching the card cycle, then punish after he locks or throws a non-Gold Card. Shunpo in from an angle that makes Wild Cards awkward, and do not channel Death Lotus into a held Gold Card. If he uses Destiny to reveal or slow before the duel, wait out the slow before committing.

Later Twisted Fate avoids straight duels and wins by moving first with Gate and Destiny. Katarina should threaten fog flanks around his arrival point and punish him after Gold Card is used on another target.

    • A held card changes the whole trade; do not guess into Gold Card.
    • Wild Cards is easiest to dodge after Shunpo if you move diagonally, not straight backward.
    • Destiny revealing you can ruin flank timing, so wait for it to expire before committing to a reset chain.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's Veil
  • Twitch

    TwitchEven

Katarina can delete Twitch if she finds him first, but Ambush and stacked Expunge let him choose the opening and punish failed burst.

Watch for Ambush lets Twitch open from invisibility with free poison stacks before Katarina can choose the fight.

    How to beat

Do not walk alone into fog when Ambush is available; force him to reveal on waves, wards, or teammates. If he opens first, Shunpo defensively to break Spray and Pray's line and wait for Venom Cask slow to fade before re-engaging. If you reveal him or he has no Ambush, jump immediately and burst before Expunge stacks become lethal.

Later Twitch is far more dangerous in grouped fights because Spray and Pray can hit through the whole team, but he is also reset food if caught. Katarina should flank with vision control and enter after Twitch reveals or after his team burns peel for him.

    • Count poison stacks; staying for one more spell can put Expunge into kill range.
    • Spray and Pray is directional, so Shunpoing behind or to the side matters.
    • Pink-style detection and wards are more valuable here than raw duel stats.
    BuySightstoneZhonya's HourglassNinja Tabi
  • Vayne

    VayneUnfavoured

Vayne's Condemn and Final Hour kiting make it difficult for Katarina to keep Death Lotus on her long enough to finish the duel.

Watch for Condemn knocks Katarina away and can stun her into terrain, canceling the all-in and giving Vayne space to kite.

    How to beat

Avoid fighting near walls where Condemn becomes a stun. Use Q poke and wait for Tumble or Condemn to be spent before Shunpoing in, then stay close enough that she cannot reset spacing with one roll. If Final Hour is active and she still has Condemn, disengage unless she is already low.

Later Vayne is one of the stronger finished side-lane duelists and can beat Katarina if she has room to kite. In teamfights, Katarina should wait for Vayne to reveal after Final Hour Tumble or target another carry first to start resets.

    • Wall position decides this matchup more than raw damage.
    • Do not Death Lotus until Condemn is down or she is locked by someone else.
    • Final Hour invisibility during Tumble can waste your channel if you ult too early.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassNinja Tabi
  • Veigar

    VeigarEven

The duel is volatile because Katarina can kill Veigar quickly, but Event Horizon and Primordial Burst punish any predictable Shunpo.

Watch for Event Horizon stuns Katarina if she crosses the perimeter, stopping her engage or canceling Death Lotus setup.

    How to beat

Do not Shunpo directly into the edge of Event Horizon; wait for the cage or jump to a target position that keeps you inside without touching the wall. Bait the cage with movement and Q pressure, then commit while it is down because Veigar has no mobility. Respect Primordial Burst if you have built heavy AP, since it scales with your AP as well as his burst.

Later Veigar's late-game burst makes the side duel dangerous for both champions: whoever lands control first wins. In teamfights, Katarina should enter after Event Horizon is used, because a single stun ruins the reset chain.

    • Being inside the cage is not the same as being stunned; touching the rim is the mistake.
    • Dark Matter is dodgeable after Shunpo, so do not stand still to channel unless cage is gone.
    • Primordial Burst hits harder the more AP you have, so low health is not the only danger check.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsQuicksilver Sash
  • Warwick

    WarwickUnfavoured

Warwick's sustain and Infinite Duress let him outlast Katarina and interrupt her most important damage window.

Watch for Infinite Duress suppresses Katarina and cancels Death Lotus while Warwick heals through the trade.

    How to beat

Do not duel him from even health while Infinite Duress is ready unless you can kill before he casts it. Poke him down and disengage after Hungering Strike, then look for an all-in only when his suppress is down or he has used it on someone else. Keep Shunpo available after his ultimate so you can leave before his autos and Q heal the fight back.

Later Warwick remains favored in side-lane duels because he can lock Katarina down and heal through cooldown gaps. Katarina should play teamfights around his ultimate cooldown and punish backline targets while Warwick is committed elsewhere.

    • Blood Scent makes low-health escapes risky; do not linger in side lanes after a failed all-in.
    • His sustain means small poke only matters if you can deny him time to Q or auto back up.
    • QSS can remove the suppression, but you still need an exit target after cleansing.
    BuyQuicksilver SashBanshee's Veil
  • Wukong

    WukongUnfavoured

Wukong has enough burst, deception, and Cyclone interruption to beat Katarina if she commits into his cooldowns.

Watch for Cyclone knocks Katarina up and cancels Death Lotus while continuing to damage her in melee range.

    How to beat

Do not channel Death Lotus until Cyclone is down or Wukong is already locked down. Use Bouncing Blade to test his position after Decoy, and avoid spending Shunpo into the clone unless you are sure he has actually stayed. Trade after Nimbus Strike when he has fewer ways to choose the angle, then leave before Crushing Blow and autos extend the fight.

Later Wukong is stronger in direct side fights and can also ruin Katarina's teamfight entry with Cyclone. Katarina should wait for Cyclone to start on the frontline or end entirely before diving carries.

    • Decoy can waste both Shunpo targeting and Death Lotus time if you panic ult.
    • Cyclone's knockup is the real danger, not just the damage.
    • If Nimbus Strike is used on minions to reach you, punish the predictable landing with Q-W and retreat.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassNinja Tabi
  • Zilean

    ZileanEven

Katarina can catch Zilean, but Time Warp spacing and Chronoshift can deny the kill that would start Voracity resets.

Watch for Chronoshift revives Zilean or his ally, denying Katarina the kill timing she needs for Voracity.

    How to beat

Use Shunpo only after Time Warp is used or when you have a nearby target to follow through the slow. Force Chronoshift with a partial combo, then disengage instead of wasting Death Lotus into the revive. Re-enter after the mark expires or after he revives low enough for a clean second kill.

Later Zilean avoids true side duels with speed control, but he is a major teamfight problem because Chronoshift breaks Katarina's reset math. Katarina should either kill him after the ult is forced or choose a different target while tracking who is marked.

    • Time Bomb damage is delayed, so do not stay low after winning the first trade.
    • Time Warp can be used as either his escape or your slow; watch which version he spends.
    • A revived target does not give you the reset when you wanted it, so plan the second entry before committing.
