Jarvan IV
The Exemplar of Demacia
How this differs from the live game
- Cataclysm (R) is single target
- Demacian Standard (E) passive grants armor

Flat attack damage marks and quints improve early clears and ganks, and they directly scale Dragon Strike (Q) and Cataclysm (R), which both use bonus AD. Armor seals are for jungle camps, while flat MR glyphs cover early magic damage in skirmishes.
This is a 9/21/0 jungle page: offense gives attack speed, scaling AD, and armor penetration for Q/R damage, while defense supplies the camp durability and engage survivability Jarvan needs. The rejected extra point is removed by taking Tenacious at 2/3, leaving exactly 30 points.
Skill order
ultimate at 6, 11 and 16Martial Cadence
- Dragon Strike (Q) takes points at levels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9.
- Golden Aegis (W) takes points at levels 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
- Demacian Standard (E) takes points at levels 1, 8, 10, 12, 13.
- Cataclysm (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.
Start E for the armor and attack-speed standard, take Q second for the E-Q knockup, then W for the early slow and shield. Max Q first for damage, cooldown, and armor shred, then E for stronger clears and team attack speed, with W last.
Alternative — W can be taken at level 2 before Q when you expect an invade or need the shield/slow immediately, but the max order stays Q then E.
Why these items
Openingsall within the 475 starting gold
Machete sustain start — Default jungle start: Hunter's Machete plus five Health Potions gives the safest first clear and leaves trinket vision for river or buff protection.
Machete ward start — Use this when early invades or lane-gank setups matter more than maximum potion sustain.
Corein buy order
1Spirit of the Ancient Golem2,000gSpirit of the Ancient Golem gives health, sustain, cooldown reduction, monster damage, and Tenacity, making Jarvan a reliable front-line initiator.
2Ninja Tabi1,000gNinja Tabi is the standard armor boot when diving into marksmen and taking jungle or lane basic attacks.
3Locket of the Iron Solari2,225gLocket of the Iron Solari adds teamfight shielding and armor-heavy utility that fits Jarvan's engage role.
4Randuin's Omen3,125gRanduin's Omen lets Jarvan trap priority targets with Cataclysm and keep enemy carries slowed after the engage.
Situationalonly when the game asks for it

Mercury's Treads1,200gBuy Mercury's Treads instead of Ninja Tabi when crowd control or magic damage is the main threat; do not pair them with Spirit of the Ancient Golem just for Tenacity stacking value.

Spirit of the Elder Lizard2,000gChoose Spirit of the Elder Lizard when your team needs more early damage and you are snowballing ganks instead of serving as the main tank.

The Black Cleaver3,000gBuy The Black Cleaver when your team has multiple physical damage threats and you can repeatedly apply armor shred with Q, autos, and Cataclysm.

Sunfire Cape2,650gSunfire Cape is good when you need cheaper armor and health for brawling inside Cataclysm rather than the active slow from Randuin's.

Banshee's Veil2,750gBanshee's Veil is the defensive swap against pick spells or heavy AP engage that would stop your initiation.

Flat AD marks and quints directly increase Dragon Strike and Cataclysm through their bonus AD ratios while also improving last-hitting and early all-ins. Armor seals are standard for top trades; swap glyphs to scaling MR only into lanes with little early magic damage.
Use 9/21/0: offense gives Ignite improvement, AD scaling, and armor penetration for Q/R damage, while defense supplies the health, mitigation, and tenacity-style durability top Jarvan needs to initiate and survive.
Skill order
ultimate at 6, 11 and 16Martial Cadence

- Golden Aegis (W) takes points at levels 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
- Demacian Standard (E) takes points at levels 1, 8, 10, 12, 13.
- Cataclysm (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.
Max Q first for lane poke, armor shred, and the lowest E-Q engage cooldown; max E second for its passive armor/attack speed and stronger flag damage. Start E for the level 1 passive stats and flag control, then take Q at level 2 for the knockup combo and W at level 3 for trades.
Alternative — Max E before Q only in farm-heavy lanes where you cannot safely Q trade and value the passive armor/attack speed plus safer flag farming.
Why these items
Openingsall within the 475 starting gold
Flask sustain start — Default into poke, tanks, and most blind lanes; Flask plus three Health Potions lets Jarvan trade with Q and recover through mana costs.
Doran's Shield start — Best into basic-attack harassment or ranged top lanes where Shieldwall and health regen reduce repeated chip damage.
Doran's Blade start — Use into melee lanes you can pressure early; the AD improves Q/R scaling and the on-hit sustain supports short trades.

1The Brutalizer1,337gThe Brutalizer is Jarvan's key early damage spike: AD, cooldown reduction, and lethality all support Q poke and E-Q all-ins.
2Sunfire Cape2,650gSunfire Cape gives the armor and health top Jarvan needs while adding constant damage when he traps targets in Cataclysm.
3Randuin's Omen3,125gRanduin's Omen is the main anti-AD teamfight item, adding a second area slow after Jarvan engages.
4Youmuu's Ghostblade2,700gYoumuu's Ghostblade upgrades the early Brutalizer into burst, armor penetration, and an active for reaching or sticking to carries.
Situationalonly when the game asks for it

Ninja Tabi1,000gBuy Ninja Tabi instead of Mercury's Treads against heavy physical damage or basic-attack top laners with limited crowd control.

Spirit Visage2,750gBuy Spirit Visage when the enemy has sustained magic damage and you want cooldown reduction plus stronger health regeneration.

Banshee's Veil2,750gBuy Banshee's Veil when one spell decides fights, such as a pick tool or hard disengage that stops your engage.

Last Whisper2,300gBuy Last Whisper when the enemy frontline is stacking armor and your team needs Jarvan to keep dealing physical damage.

Trinity Force3,628gBuy Trinity Force in a snowballing bruiser game where you can afford a greedier damage item and do not already have another Spellblade item.

Quicksilver Sash1,550gBuy Quicksilver Sash against suppressions or single debuffs that will otherwise kill you after you engage.

- Armor +9.00
- Magic Resist +12.60
- Gold +3.00 / 10s
Attack Damage marks make Jarvan's early autos, Dragon Strike (Q), and Cataclysm (R) hit harder because Q and R scale with bonus AD, not AP. Armor seals and MR glyphs cover melee support trading, while gold quints help a ward-heavy Season 3 support reach Sightstone and aura items.
This is a 0/9/21 support page: defense gives enough health and armor to survive melee engages, while utility supplies Flash cooldown, lane sustain, gold generation, extra starting gold, free warding, Pickpocket, and roaming speed.
Skill order
ultimate at 6, 11 and 16Martial Cadence
- Dragon Strike (Q) takes points at levels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9.
- Golden Aegis (W) takes points at levels 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
- Demacian Standard (E) takes points at levels 1, 8, 10, 12, 13.
- Cataclysm (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.
Start E for the flag aura/damage and level 2 E-Q engage, then max Q first for lower cooldown, stronger poke, and armor reduction. E is maxed second for the attack speed/armor utility; W is left late because the shield was mostly a slow and survival button on support income.
Alternative — Max E before Q in lanes where you cannot safely walk up for repeated Q trades and your ADC benefits more from sustained Demacian Standard attack speed.
Why these items
Openingsall within the 475 starting gold
Faerie Charm ward start — Default support opening when you expect standard laning: mana regen lets you threaten E-Q while three wards cover river, tri-brush, and lane brush.
Rejuvenation Bead ward start — Use into poke lanes where health regen is more valuable than mana regen before your first recall.
Explorer's Ward heavy vision start — With Wealth/Explorer, open this when early brush control or a level 1 invade check matters enough to buy a pink ward immediately.

1Sightstone800gSightstone was mandatory Season 3 support economy: it turns early gold into repeatable map control and gives Jarvan useful health.

3Runic Bulwark2,950gRunic Bulwark was the premier teamfight aura item, adding team magic resist and durability while Jarvan dives first.
4Locket of the Iron Solari2,225gLocket of the Iron Solari adds armor, health, sustain aura, and an active shield for clustered dragon and tower fights.
Situationalonly when the game asks for it

Mercury's Treads1,200gBuy Mercury's Treads instead of Mobility Boots when enemy CC or magic damage prevents you from completing engages.

Ninja Tabi1,000gBuy Ninja Tabi when the enemy lane and main carry are basic-attack physical damage threats.

Mikael's Crucible2,500gBuy Mikael's Crucible when one allied carry is being decided by stuns, snares, slows, or taunts and you can play near them.

Twin Shadows1,900gBuy Twin Shadows when your team needs pick setup and fog-of-war scouting before Jarvan commits with E-Q.

Frozen Heart2,900gBuy Frozen Heart against double AD or attack-speed-heavy teams when the aura matters more than Randuin's health.

Guardian Angel2,750gBuy Guardian Angel late when you must start fights and the enemy team can immediately burst you after Cataclysm.

Abilities
per rankMartial Cadence
Jarvan's first basic attack on an enemy deals bonus physical damage based on their current Health. This effect cannot occur again on the same enemy for a few seconds.
Dragon Strike5 ranks
Jarvan IV extends his lance, dealing physical damage and lowering the Armor of all enemies in its path. Additionally, this will pull Jarvan to his Demacian Standard, knocking up enemies in his path.

Matchup against
62 champions, one-on-one
AhriUnfavoured
Ahri wins if she saves Charm or Spirit Rush for Jarvan IV's engage, because he has one committed gap closer and she can punish the landing point with magic burst and true-damage return from Orb of Deception.
Watch for Charm stops Dragon Strike plus Demacian Standard or the Cataclysm follow-up and gives Ahri the full spell rotation.
How to beat
Hold just outside Charm range and make Ahri spend Orb of Deception on the wave before you walk up. Do not EQ in a straight line while Charm is available; look for a short Cataclysm after she has used at least one Spirit Rush charge or when Charm is down. If she ults out, take the cooldown win and reset instead of chasing through Fox-Fire and Orb return.
Later Ahri is still better at avoiding the side-lane all-in, but Jarvan IV brings more reliable teamfight initiation if he can force her Spirit Rush defensively. In fights, do not Cataclysm her first unless Charm or Spirit Rush is already spent; trap her backline or peel the first dive and let Ahri waste cooldowns kiting.
- Sidestep sideways after your EQ knock-up attempt; Orb of Deception's return is the part that really hurts.
- Cataclysm can force Spirit Rush charges, but it rarely kills Ahri by itself.
- A blocked Charm often means Ahri has no clean way to stop your full combo.
- Do not chase her through all three Spirit Rush dashes unless your team is already collapsing.

AkaliEven
Jarvan IV can punish Akali before she gets repeated Shadow Dance casts, but if she survives the first knock-up and plays inside Twilight Shroud she outlasts him with spell vamp and resets.
Watch for Twilight Shroud denies your follow-up attacks after EQ or Cataclysm and lets Akali wait out Martial Cadence and Golden Aegis.
How to beat
Fight around the edge of Twilight Shroud, not in the center, so she has to reveal herself to keep damaging you. Bait Mark of the Assassin, back off before she can consume it cleanly, then re-engage while the mark window is gone. Commit when she has used a Shadow Dance charge aggressively and cannot immediately dash back through you.
Later Akali becomes much harder to hold in a side lane once she has enough damage and sustain to survive the first combo. Jarvan IV is usually more valuable in teamfights by starting fights before Akali can choose a flank, but he should save Golden Aegis and knock-up timing to reveal and disrupt her dive path.
- Do not spend your whole combo into the middle of Twilight Shroud unless you know she cannot leave it.
- Your first passive hit matters; make sure it lands before she starts shroud stalling.
- Cataclysm can trap Akali, but Shadow Dance still lets her stick to you inside the arena.
- If she throws Mark of the Assassin and waits, step back until the mark pressure fades.

AlistarEven
Jarvan IV has more damage, but Alistar's Pulverize, Headbutt, healing, and Unbreakable Will make a clean kill difficult unless Jarvan IV times damage after the ultimate expires.
Watch for Unbreakable Will removes your crowd control and heavily reduces your burst during the window where Jarvan IV normally wins.
How to beat
Do not unload Q, passive, and Cataclysm into Unbreakable Will unless you are only forcing him away. Walk up for short trades after Alistar uses Pulverize or Headbutt, then back out before Triumphant Roar and Trample turn it into a long sustain fight. Commit only when Unbreakable Will is down or when he has used Headbutt in a direction that does not disengage you.
Later Alistar is not a serious side-lane killer, but he is harder to finish and more disruptive in grouped fights. Jarvan IV should use Cataclysm on Alistar's carries rather than the bull himself, unless trapping Alistar prevents a Headbutt peel from ruining the engage.
- If Alistar holds Headbutt, Cataclysm often just gives him a clean way to knock you out.
- Save burst until after Unbreakable Will when possible.
- Short trades favor Jarvan IV; long trades into Triumphant Roar waste time.
- You can EQ after he uses Pulverize, but respect the immediate Headbutt disengage.

AmumuFavoured
Jarvan IV's armor shred, passive burst, and stronger early physical trades beat Amumu before Despair and repeated Tantrums can grind him down.
Watch for Curse of the Sad Mummy locks you in place long enough for Despair and Tantrum to turn a won trade into an extended magic-damage fight.
How to beat
Stay slightly off-angle from Bandage Toss and punish him when it misses, because Amumu has no clean way to force you afterward. Trade with passive auto, Q armor shred, and back out before Despair runs for too long. If he ults defensively, wait out the stun and re-engage after the Despair damage has cost him too much health or mana.
Later Amumu becomes more important in teamfights than in the side lane because Curse of the Sad Mummy can win grouped fights even if Jarvan IV beats him alone. Jarvan IV should either interrupt Amumu's backline access early or engage on carries from a side angle so Amumu cannot ult the whole team at once.
- Do not stand in Despair just to finish a low-value chase.
- His Tantrum damage reduction is annoying, but your Q armor shred still makes trades stick.
- Dodge Bandage Toss and you control the fight timing.
- Cataclysm is best after Curse of the Sad Mummy, not before it.

AniviaUnfavoured
Anivia can wall off Jarvan IV's engage path, stun him with Flash Frost, and force him to kill her twice through Rebirth while Glacial Storm controls the arena.
Watch for Crystallize cuts off your exit or breaks your chase angle after EQ, leaving you inside Flash Frost and Glacial Storm.
How to beat
Approach from fog or a flank, because a front-facing Anivia can see the EQ line and wall the path. Bait Flash Frost before committing Cataclysm, then save Dragon Strike plus Standard to leave if Glacial Storm and wall trap you. Only all-in when Rebirth can actually be finished, or you are just spending everything to create an egg your team cannot kill.
Later Anivia usually controls side-lane waves too well to be cleanly dueled, but she hates being forced before her wall and stun are set. In teamfights, Jarvan IV should engage from angles that make Crystallize awkward and avoid trapping his own team inside Glacial Storm.
- Do not Cataclysm Anivia if Rebirth is up and your team cannot hit the egg.
- A missed Flash Frost is your clearest engage window.
- Crystallize can deny your retreat after EQ, so keep one movement option if possible.
- Standing in Glacial Storm inside your own arena is usually losing the trade.

AnnieUnfavoured
Annie's targeted stun burst is faster than Jarvan IV's sustained melee damage, and Tibbers makes his Cataclysm all-in dangerous if he engages into Pyromania.
Watch for Pyromania plus Summon: Tibbers stuns Jarvan IV during his commit and front-loads enough magic damage to win the duel.
How to beat
Track Annie's stun stacks before every trade; if Pyromania is ready, do not EQ in unless you are certain the burst will kill. Force her to spend stun on Q or W defensively, then engage while Tibbers or the stun is unavailable. Keep trades short when Molten Shield is active, because hitting through it adds return damage and durability.
Later Annie remains a stronger point-and-click burst threat in grouped fights, but Jarvan IV can decide fights by forcing her to stun defensively instead of flashing forward. Side lane is playable only if her stun and Tibbers are down; otherwise group and engage from angles she cannot instantly punish.
- Count Pyromania stacks; this matchup changes completely at four.
- Do not auto mindlessly into Molten Shield during a close duel.
- Cataclysm can hold Annie in place, but Tibbers makes the arena hurt you too.
- If she uses stun on a minion or peel target, your next few seconds are the fight window.

AsheFavoured
Jarvan IV wins the duel if he reaches Ashe because she has no dash and cannot survive EQ, Golden Aegis slow, passive damage, and Cataclysm at equal strength.
Watch for Enchanted Crystal Arrow stops your engage or escape and gives Ashe enough time to kite with Frost Shot.
How to beat
Do not walk straight through Volley and Frost Shot; use brush or side angles to shorten the distance before using EQ. Bait or dodge Enchanted Crystal Arrow, then commit immediately because Ashe has no mobility once it is gone. If she holds arrow, Cataclysm first can force a panic cast at close range where it is easier to follow up after the stun.
Later Ashe outscales as a backline teamfight carry if protected, but Jarvan IV remains a direct threat to her if he can flank. In side lane she should not be able to stand alone against him; in teamfights, force Flash or arrow before trapping her with Cataclysm.
- Golden Aegis helps cover the last steps through Frost Shot slows.
- A clean EQ knock-up usually means Ashe must Flash or die.
- Do not start the chase from max Volley range unless she has no arrow.
- Cataclysm after her Flash is much better than Cataclysm before it.

BlitzcrankFavoured
Blitzcrank can interrupt and displace Jarvan IV, but he lacks the sustained damage to beat Jarvan IV in a straight melee fight after his combo is spent.
Watch for Rocket Grab pulls you out of your chosen angle and can ruin an EQ setup or drag you under tower or into allies.
How to beat
Fight him away from his turret and minion choke points so Rocket Grab cannot turn the duel into a terrain problem. Let Blitzcrank use Power Fist or Rocket Grab first if possible, then trade through him with Q armor shred and passive hits. Save Cataclysm until after Headbutt-like displacement is not available from Rocket Grab repositioning or until Mana Barrier is about to be forced.
Later Blitzcrank is rarely a side-lane threat, but his pick potential can decide teamfights before Jarvan IV gets a clean engage. Jarvan IV should stand where Rocket Grab cannot pick a carry, then counter-engage once Blitzcrank misses or uses hook.
- Mana Barrier makes his last 20% health deceptive; do not overcommit under tower for it.
- If he uses Rocket Grab on you in a fair duel, he often pulls Jarvan IV into winning range.
- Power Fist can interrupt your follow-up autos, but it does not stop your full damage plan by itself.
- Cataclysm is stronger after Static Field is down if the fight is close.

BrandUnfavoured
Brand's percentage burn and stun setup punish Jarvan IV for committing in a straight line, and Cataclysm can trap Jarvan IV inside Brand's full spell area.
Watch for Sear after Blaze stuns Jarvan IV, stopping the engage and guaranteeing Pillar of Flame or Pyroclasm damage.
How to beat
Never EQ predictably after Brand has tagged you with Conflagration or Pillar of Flame, because Sear becomes the duel-losing stun. Bait Pillar of Flame, sidestep the delayed zone, then engage before Brand can apply Blaze again. Cataclysm only when Sear is down or when Brand is already low enough that he cannot finish his rotation.
Later Brand remains more dangerous in clustered teamfights than in side-lane duels because Pyroclasm punishes grouped targets and Cataclysm walls can keep people near him. Jarvan IV should flank and isolate Brand after his stun is used, or engage away from allied clumps so Pyroclasm loses bounce value.
- If Blaze is on you, assume Sear is lethal until it is dodged or spent.
- Do not trap yourself and allies with Brand inside Cataclysm during Pyroclasm.
- Pillar of Flame has a delay; your engage window often starts right after it misses.
- Magic resist matters more than armor in this duel.

Cho'GathUnfavoured
Cho'Gath's silence, knock-up, sustain, and Feast execute make it hard for Jarvan IV to finish him before the return damage wins the long fight.
Watch for Feral Scream silences you during your engage window, preventing EQ follow-up or Golden Aegis while Cho'Gath sets up Rupture and Feast.
How to beat
Do not start with EQ if Cho'Gath is holding Feral Scream at close range; bait the silence with footwork, then trade during its cooldown. Keep moving diagonally after every auto so Rupture does not land under your retreat path. Commit only when Feast cannot execute you or when Cho'Gath is low enough that Cataclysm plus passive damage kills before his cooldowns cycle again.
Later Cho'Gath usually wins extended side-lane fights once he is tanky and stacked, while Jarvan IV contributes more flexible engage if he avoids being silenced before comboing. In teamfights, do not Cataclysm Cho'Gath unless separating him from carries matters more than killing him.
- Watch your health relative to Feast; the duel changes once you enter execute range.
- Rupture is easiest for him after Feral Scream, so respect the silence first.
- Your Q armor shred helps, but Cho'Gath's sustain makes repeated short trades less rewarding.
- Cataclysm can trap Cho'Gath, but it also keeps you near Feast.

CorkiEven
Jarvan IV wins if he lands decisive crowd control before Valkyrie, but Corki's mixed damage, armor shred, and escape make the duel skill-dependent.
Watch for Valkyrie escapes Cataclysm or EQ follow-up and leaves a damage trail that punishes Jarvan IV for chasing.
How to beat
Pressure Corki until he uses Valkyrie, then commit with Cataclysm or EQ while the escape is unavailable. Avoid standing in Gatling Gun for the full channel, because the armor reduction makes his autos and missiles much more threatening. If he saves Valkyrie, use EQ as a threat to force it rather than spending every cooldown into his escape.
Later Corki scales into a strong mixed-damage carry and is more valuable if protected in teamfights, but Jarvan IV can still win side-lane catches when Valkyrie is down. In grouped fights, Jarvan IV should force Valkyrie early and re-engage with the next cooldown or trap Corki after another teammate draws the escape.
- Do not chase through Valkyrie's fire trail unless the kill is guaranteed.
- Gatling Gun's armor shred makes extended face-to-face trades worse than they look.
- Cataclysm after Valkyrie is the clean kill pattern.
- Corki's mixed damage makes single-resist stacking less reliable.

Dr. MundoUnfavoured
Dr. Mundo outlasts Jarvan IV in long fights through Sadism, health stacking, and constant Cleaver pressure unless Jarvan IV has healing reduction and a clear burst window.
Watch for Sadism restores too much health during your all-in and turns Cataclysm into time for Mundo to regenerate while fighting back.
How to beat
Do not take a slow chase through repeated Infected Cleavers; close from fog or after he misses one. Trade in short windows with passive plus Q armor shred, then disengage before Burning Agony and Masochism make the fight about raw uptime. Commit only when Sadism is down or when you have Grievous Wounds available before he presses it.
Later Mundo becomes the stronger side-lane stat check once finished, especially if Jarvan IV cannot cut his healing. Jarvan IV should usually group, force fights on Mundo's carries, and apply healing reduction when Mundo is the only reachable target.
- Executioner's Calling is one of the few items that directly changes this duel.
- Do not Cataclysm Mundo at high health while Sadism is ready.
- Dodging the first Cleaver often decides whether you can ever reach him cleanly.
- If Mundo turns on Burning Agony inside your arena, end the trade quickly.

EvelynnFavoured
Jarvan IV's upfront physical burst and crowd control beat Evelynn if he survives the opening ambush and does not let her kite with Dark Frenzy movement speed.
Watch for Agony's Embrace slows you and gives Evelynn a strong opening or disengage window before you can lock her down.
How to beat
Respect her first hit from camouflage and keep enough health that she cannot start the duel with a free burst combo. Once she shows, answer immediately with Golden Aegis slow and EQ rather than chasing after Dark Frenzy has already stacked movement speed. Cataclysm is strongest after Agony's Embrace is used, because she has no true dash to leave the arena.
Later Evelynn is more dangerous through flanks and picks than honest side-lane duels. Jarvan IV should group with vision control, absorb or reveal her engage, then lock her down or counter-engage before she reaches the backline.
- Buy vision when the matchup is about ambushes, not raw stats.
- Do not waste EQ into empty space before Evelynn commits from camouflage.
- Golden Aegis helps keep her in range after Dark Frenzy speed starts.
- Cataclysm denies her ability to simply walk out after using Agony's Embrace.

EzrealEven
Jarvan IV can kill Ezreal if Arcane Shift is forced first, but Ezreal's poke and blink make a fair duel depend on who spends mobility better.
Watch for Arcane Shift dodges your EQ or exits Cataclysm, removing the one window Jarvan IV needs to stay on him.
How to beat
Approach in a way that makes Ezreal use Arcane Shift defensively before you spend Cataclysm. Use minions and angles to reduce Mystic Shot poke, then engage immediately after he blinks or misses the key Q that would refresh his cooldowns. If Arcane Shift is still up, hold EQ as a threat and walk him down with Golden Aegis rather than giving him a clean dodge.
Later Ezreal is safer in teamfights than many carries because Arcane Shift lets him avoid the first engage, but Jarvan IV still controls space and forces him backward. Side-lane kills are realistic only when Arcane Shift is down; otherwise use Cataclysm to burn his escape and let the team follow up on the next cooldown.
- Do not EQ from max range when Arcane Shift is ready.
- Standing behind minions reduces Mystic Shot cooldown resets and poke pressure.
- Cataclysm after Arcane Shift is much stronger than using it to force the blink.
- Essence Flux lowering attack speed matters if you try to finish with autos.

FiddlesticksUnfavoured
Fiddlesticks can fear Jarvan IV out of his engage and win the stationary duel with Drain unless Jarvan IV interrupts or bursts him before the channel matters.
Watch for Terrify makes Jarvan IV lose control during his commit, often allowing a full Drain or Crowstorm channel to decide the fight.
How to beat
Do not engage while Terrify is ready unless you have enough burst to kill through the fear delay. Bait Drain, interrupt or leave its tether range, then re-enter when Fiddlesticks has no sustain channel. If he channels Crowstorm from fog, use EQ defensively or Cataclysm only after the arrival if trapping him prevents him from reaching your team.
Later Fiddlesticks is far more threatening in teamfights than side-lane duels because Crowstorm punishes clustered fights and terrain traps. Jarvan IV should keep vision on flank angles and save disruption for Drain or Crowstorm rather than spending everything on a low-value engage.
- Breaking Drain is mandatory; trading autos into the full channel loses.
- Mercury's Treads reduce the fear window enough to matter.
- Do not Cataclysm your team inside Crowstorm unless it secures the kill immediately.
- Dark Wind silence can stop your follow-up after the first engage.

GangplankEven
Gangplank's sustained melee damage, Parrrley poke, and Remove Scurvy cleanse make the duel close, but Jarvan IV can win if he forces the cleanse before committing Cataclysm.
Watch for Remove Scurvy clears your knock-up follow-up pressure or Cataclysm slow setup and heals through your burst window.
How to beat
Trade after Gangplank uses Parrrley on farm or poke, then back off before poison and Raise Morale turn it into a long chase. Force Remove Scurvy with EQ pressure if possible, then commit while it is down so your Cataclysm and Golden Aegis slow actually hold him. Avoid fighting inside Cannon Barrage unless he is already trapped and low.
Later Gangplank can side-lane well and brings global teamfight pressure, while Jarvan IV has the more reliable hard engage. In grouped fights, Jarvan IV should engage after Cannon Barrage is placed or from an angle where the slow field does not cut off his whole team.
- Remove Scurvy means your first crowd-control hit may not be the real all-in.
- Do not stand in Cannon Barrage just because Cataclysm keeps Gangplank nearby.
- Parrrley poke adds up before the duel starts; engage before you are softened too far.
- Armor is valuable, but his passive magic damage means health also matters.

GarenUnfavoured
Garen is built to win the same short melee space Jarvan wants, and his silence plus execute punish Jarvan when the trade runs long.
Watch for Decisive Strike: the silence stops Jarvan from using Golden Aegis or the flag-drag combo when Garen commits.
How to beat
Do not stand in melee after your Martial Cadence hit and Dragon Strike armor shred; take the first hit, then back out before Judgment gets full value. Bait Decisive Strike by holding Golden Aegis until after the silence, then re-engage only if Garen has spent Courage and cannot absorb your burst. Cataclysm is best used to finish, not to start, because trapping yourself with Garen at execute health is usually losing.
Later Garen remains favored in the side lane if he can force repeated all-ins and reset Perseverance between them. Jarvan is more useful in teamfights by starting on carries and leaving Garen to be kited or peeled instead of dueling him front to front.
- Tap Garen with Dragon Strike or Demacian Standard to keep Perseverance from restarting.
- If Decisive Strike is glowing, do not begin the flag-drag unless you are outside his silence range.
- Golden Aegis after Judgment starts buys more time than shielding before he reaches you.
- Do not Cataclysm Garen while Demacian Justice is available unless you know the burst kills first.

GragasEven
Jarvan wins if he pins Gragas before the disengage, but Gragas can break the engage and grind him down with sustain and magic burst.
Watch for Body Slam: it interrupts or stops Jarvan's engage path and leaves him slowed in Barrel Roll range.
How to beat
Hold medium range and make Gragas choose between using Body Slam to farm space or saving it for your flag-drag. If Body Slam is down, commit immediately with Demacian Standard into Dragon Strike and force the fight before he can kite with Barrel Roll. Save Cataclysm until after Explosive Cask or he can knock you out of your own finish window.
Later Finished Gragas is usually better in grouped fights because Explosive Cask can ruin Jarvan's engage or isolate his backline. In side lane, Jarvan can still threaten him if Body Slam is down, but he should mostly use pressure to create flank angles rather than chase forever.
- Do not flag-drag straight through a placed Barrel Roll if Gragas is waiting to detonate it.
- If Gragas channels Drunken Rage in front of you, that is often your cleanest engage timer.
- Cataclysm after Explosive Cask is much harder for Gragas to answer.
- Dragon Strike armor shred matters less if Gragas has built mostly AP and health, so do not overstay for autos.

HeimerdingerUnfavoured
Jarvan can kill Heimerdinger in open ground, but a prepared turret nest turns the duel into a stun-and-blind trap where Jarvan takes too much damage before reaching him.
Watch for CH-1 Concussion Grenade: the direct stun stops Jarvan's engage and the blind removes the follow-up basic attacks he needs to finish.
How to beat
Do not duel inside multiple H-28G Evolution Turrets unless Heimerdinger has missed grenade or is already low. Clear the edge of the setup with Dragon Strike and look for a flag-drag from fog or from outside rocket focus range. Once grenade is down, commit fully; slow walking into turrets gives him time to kite and rebuild the position.
Later Heimerdinger is still poor in a true open-field duel, but around towers and objectives he makes Jarvan's engage much more expensive. Jarvan should flank past the turret line or start fights away from Heimer's prepared area instead of being the first champion through it.
- A direct grenade hit before your knockup usually loses the trade outright.
- Cataclysm can trap Heimerdinger away from some turrets, but only if you start from the side of the nest.
- Do not rely on Martial Cadence while blinded; wait out the blind before trying to finish.
- Demacian Standard can help clear turrets without stepping fully into the setup.

JannaFavoured
Jarvan wins the isolated duel because Janna has little sustained damage, but her kit is designed to deny his engage rather than fight him alone.
Watch for Monsoon: it knocks Jarvan out of Cataclysm's kill window and resets the distance he spent cooldowns to close.
How to beat
Walk her down patiently and do not spend flag-drag into a charged Howling Gale unless you have no other way to force her. If Monsoon is available, use Cataclysm after she knocks you back or when she is already close to lethal. In real games, look for her after she has used Eye Of The Storm on someone else, because that removes most of her duel padding.
Later Janna should not side lane against Jarvan, but in teamfights she is one of the best answers to his engage. Jarvan has to flank, force Monsoon early, or Cataclysm a target Janna cannot safely reach.
- If she begins charging Howling Gale, change angle instead of finishing a predictable flag-drag line.
- Cataclysm before Monsoon is often just a trade of ultimates in her favor.
- Her shield's attack damage matters in a duel, so wait it out if she casts it on herself early.
- Golden Aegis can keep you in Zephyr range long enough to land the final Dragon Strike.

JaxUnfavoured
Jax outscales Jarvan in the direct melee duel because Counter Strike blanks Jarvan's passive hit and autos while Jax ramps attack speed.
Watch for Counter Strike: it dodges Martial Cadence and Jarvan's basic attacks during the window where Jarvan needs to win the trade.
How to beat
Do not open with your passive auto into Counter Strike; tap him with Dragon Strike first and back up until the dodge window ends. Commit after Counter Strike is down, using Golden Aegis to hold him in range and Cataclysm before Leap Strike creates too much distance. If he has Grandmaster's Might stacked, disengage and reset instead of giving him a full extended fight.
Later Jax becomes the stronger side-lane duelist and eventually forces Jarvan away from isolated 1v1s. Jarvan's job later is to teamfight first, lock Jax away from carries with Cataclysm when his jump is committed, or engage Jax's backline before the split push decides the map.
- Save Martial Cadence until after Counter Strike whenever possible.
- If Jax leaps in with Counter Strike already active, flag-drag away rather than trading autos.
- Frozen Heart and Randuin's both hurt his Grandmaster's Might attack-speed plan.
- Cataclysm is risky if Jax still has Leap Strike targets outside the wall.

KarthusFavoured
Jarvan can reach and burst Karthus through his low mobility, but he must respect the damage that continues after the kill.
Watch for Death Defied: killing Karthus does not end the fight, so Jarvan can die inside Defile after committing Cataclysm.
How to beat
Hold enough side angle that Wall of Pain does not force you to approach in a straight line through Lay Waste. Once Wall of Pain is used or missed, flag-drag onto him and keep moving between autos so isolated Lay Waste does not chain hit you. If he dies with Defile running, leave the body immediately unless the last hit is guaranteed and you can survive the passive casts.
Later Karthus is far more valuable in grouped fights if Jarvan clumps his team in Defile and Requiem range. Jarvan can still kill him in side lane, but late fights are about forcing Karthus to die in a bad position, then exiting Death Defied instead of celebrating too early.
- Do not Cataclysm Karthus if it traps you in Defile with no exit health.
- Moving unpredictably after the knockup denies repeated isolated Lay Waste hits.
- Hexdrinker can turn the post-death Requiem or Defile tick that would finish you.
- Wall of Pain being down is the clearest green light to engage.

KassadinUnfavoured
Jarvan can punish Kassadin early, but a well-played Kassadin uses silence and Riftwalk to deny Jarvan's combo and choose every later trade.
Watch for Riftwalk: it lets Kassadin leave Cataclysm or dodge the flag-drag follow-up after Jarvan has spent his gap closer.
How to beat
Pressure before Kassadin has repeated Riftwalk casts available, using Dragon Strike and Martial Cadence for short physical trades. Do not throw Demacian Standard and Dragon Strike from max range unless Null Sphere is down, because the silence can stop your sequence and let him walk out. Commit only after he Riftwalks forward or sideways aggressively; if he saves it defensively, you usually cannot force the kill alone.
Later Kassadin wins the side lane through mobility and repeated magic bursts, while Jarvan keeps more reliable first-contact control in 5v5s. Late, Jarvan should start on Kassadin's teammates or force Kassadin to Riftwalk defensively before committing Cataclysm.
- A silenced Jarvan cannot complete the engage, so track Null Sphere before you start the combo.
- Cataclysm rarely holds Kassadin if Riftwalk is ready.
- Dragon Strike trades are useful because Kassadin's passive only reduces magic damage.
- Magic-resist health items matter more than raw armor in this duel.

KatarinaFavoured
Jarvan's knockup, burst, and terrain give him reliable answers to Katarina as long as he saves an interrupt for Death Lotus.
Watch for Death Lotus: if Jarvan has already spent his knockup and Cataclysm poorly, it deals the damage that wins her all-in.
How to beat
Do not panic-engage just because Katarina Shunpos forward; wait for the damage-reduction window to pass if you can. Keep either the flag-drag knockup or Cataclysm available to stop or trap her when she channels Death Lotus. Once her Shunpo target is gone or on cooldown, she has very little way to escape Jarvan's follow-up autos.
Later Katarina is more dangerous in teamfights because resets from Voracity can snowball after Jarvan's engage creates low-health targets. Jarvan should save crowd control for her channel or wall her away from resets rather than spending everything on the first target he sees.
- Flag-drag through Katarina as Death Lotus starts to cancel the channel and keep damage uptime.
- Cataclysm after Shunpo is much stronger than before it.
- Do not give her a reset by fighting at low health near dying allies.
- Early magic resist is enough; armor does little against her main damage.

KayleUnfavoured
Kayle kites Jarvan during Righteous Fury and denies his burst finish with Intervention, so Jarvan usually loses if he cannot force the ultimate early.
Watch for Intervention: it erases Jarvan's Cataclysm burst window and lets Kayle keep attacking while invulnerable.
How to beat
Stay outside Reckoning range until you are ready to commit, because the slow makes the flag-drag easier to read and punish. Force Intervention with a short engage, then disengage with Golden Aegis instead of continuing to trade into invulnerability. Re-enter only after Righteous Fury or Intervention is down; if both are ready, she controls the duel.
Later Kayle becomes the stronger sustained side-lane threat and also brings a fight-changing save for whoever Jarvan dives. Jarvan has to bait Intervention before the real engage or Cataclysm a target Kayle cannot ult in time.
- Do not use Cataclysm as your first damage if Intervention is ready.
- Righteous Fury makes her a ranged champion for the trade; treat the matchup as a kite lane, not a melee duel.
- Golden Aegis after Reckoning helps you survive the slow window.
- If Kayle uses Divine Blessing for speed instead of healing, her next few seconds are easier to punish.

KennenUnfavoured
Kennen's range, speed, and repeated stuns let him avoid Jarvan's clean engage and punish him hard when Cataclysm traps both champions inside Slicing Maelstrom.
Watch for Slicing Maelstrom: it turns Jarvan's own Cataclysm into a stun zone if Jarvan ults while Kennen's ultimate is ready.
How to beat
Approach from angles that force Kennen to spend Lightning Rush defensively before you commit the flag-drag. If he has multiple Mark of the Storm stacks on you, back off before engaging because the stun will interrupt your damage window. Use Cataclysm only after Slicing Maelstrom is down or when the burst kills before the storm can finish you.
Later Kennen is stronger in clustered teamfights, while Jarvan is better at choosing the first target if he finds a flank. Late, Jarvan should force Kennen's ultimate without locking his own team inside it, then re-engage once the storm expires.
- Do not Cataclysm Kennen and your carries together; that gives Slicing Maelstrom perfect targets.
- Lightning Rush being down is the main engage timer.
- Mercury's Treads shorten the Mark of the Storm stun enough to finish some all-ins.
- Hold Dragon Strike until after he exits Lightning Rush if he is trying to dodge the line.

Kog'MawEven
Jarvan can delete Kog'Maw if he reaches him cleanly, but Bio-Arcane Barrage and Void Ooze make the approach lethal if Jarvan misses the engage.
Watch for Bio-Arcane Barrage: it gives Kog'Maw the range and percent-health damage to shred Jarvan before he can start the melee trade.
How to beat
Do not walk straight through Void Ooze; hold the side of the lane and make Kog'Maw choose between using it for space or saving it for your flag-drag landing. Commit when Bio-Arcane Barrage is down or near expiring, then stay on top of him with Golden Aegis and Cataclysm. If you kill him, immediately leave Icathian Surprise instead of chasing another target through the explosion path.
Later Kog'Maw is a much stronger teamfight damage source if protected, but he should not survive an isolated Jarvan engage without peel. Jarvan's late job is to flank past the front line, force Kog'Maw's defensive cooldowns, and exit after the kill before the passive explosion and enemy collapse.
- Bio-Arcane Barrage downtime is your real all-in window.
- Void Ooze on the ground can make a landed Cataclysm still lose if you entered too slowly.
- Do not stand still after killing him; Icathian Surprise is part of the duel math.
- Randuin's active helps keep him inside your melee range after the knockup.

Lee SinEven
Lee Sin can match Jarvan's early damage and mobility, but Jarvan wins if he dodges Sonic Wave or forces Lee to spend Safeguard defensively.
Watch for Sonic Wave / Resonating Strike: the second cast follows Jarvan's disengage and adds execute damage when Jarvan is already low.
How to beat
Trade around minions or terrain so Sonic Wave is harder to land, and do not use flag-drag purely backward while the mark is active unless you know Resonating Strike is unavailable. If Lee Sin uses Safeguard or Iron Will before committing, punish the missing shield and sustain window with Dragon Strike into Cataclysm. Save Golden Aegis for after Dragon's Rage or Cripple, when the slow and spacing decide whether you can keep hitting.
Later Jarvan is usually more reliable in 5v5 initiation, while Lee Sin is better at picks and displacement. In side lane the matchup stays skill-based: Lee wins extended outplays with wards and cooldowns, Jarvan wins cleaner stat-check all-ins after Lee misses Q.
- Standing behind minions makes Lee's Sonic Wave commit much less reliable.
- Cataclysm can be ruined by Dragon's Rage if Lee kicks you out before your follow-up lands.
- If Lee uses Safeguard to enter instead of exit, he has fewer tools to escape your wall.
- Do not chase a marked Lee Sin blindly; he may be baiting Resonating Strike plus Dragon's Rage.

LeonaFavoured
Leona can lock Jarvan down for a long time, but without an ally to trigger Sunlight she usually lacks the damage to win the isolated duel.
Watch for Eclipse: its resistance window absorbs Jarvan's burst and makes his Cataclysm trade much less threatening.
How to beat
Let Leona start if she wants, then wait out Eclipse before using your full passive-auto plus Dragon Strike damage. If she misses Zenith Blade, punish immediately because she has no clean way to stick to you outside Shield of Daybreak range. Do not blow Cataclysm into Eclipse unless you are using it only to hold her away from a teammate.
Later Leona almost never wants the side-lane duel, but in teamfights her crowd control can stop Jarvan from reaching carries. Jarvan should avoid stacking his backline for Solar Flare and look to engage after Leona has committed her combo elsewhere.
- Sunlight is much weaker in a true 1v1 because Leona cannot trigger it herself.
- Wait for Eclipse to pop before spending your highest damage autos.
- Zenith Blade missing is a free engage timer.
- Mercury's Treads are useful if her chain CC is keeping you from finishing the target.

LuluUnfavoured
Lulu's slows, polymorph, shield, and bonus health deny Jarvan's burst and let her kite the duel longer than he wants.
Watch for Whimsy: polymorph removes Jarvan's ability to follow his engage or cast Golden Aegis during the key burst window.
How to beat
Do not spend both gap closers before Whimsy; approach with movement and threaten the flag-drag so she uses it early. If Whimsy or Wild Growth is down, commit hard with Cataclysm and stay close enough that Glitterlance cannot create a clean reset. In normal games, attack Lulu after she shields or ultimates an ally, because self-casting those spells is what makes the duel hard.
Later Lulu is not a side-lane duelist in the usual sense, but finished support items make her excellent at invalidating Jarvan's dive target. Jarvan should bait Wild Growth before Cataclysm or switch targets when Lulu holds her cooldowns for the carry.
- A polymorphed Jarvan inside Cataclysm is often just stuck taking Pix damage.
- Wild Growth can interrupt your follow-up if you ult directly on top of her target.
- Mercury's Treads help against Glitterlance slow and Whimsy's control.
- If Help, Pix! is used on someone else, Lulu becomes much easier to burst.

LuxEven
Jarvan wins if he dodges Light Binding and reaches Lux, but Lux can control the approach and burst him before the second rotation.
Watch for Light Binding: it roots Jarvan before or after flag-drag and gives Lux enough time to land Lucent Singularity plus Finales Funkeln.
How to beat
Approach diagonally and make Lux choose between throwing Light Binding early or holding it for your landing spot. Once Light Binding misses, commit immediately; she has shield and slow, but no true escape from Cataclysm. If you are already marked by Illumination and slowed by Lucent Singularity, wait out the zone instead of forcing a predictable line engage.
Later Lux is safer in grouped fights where teammates punish Jarvan's dive, while Jarvan still wins the isolated catch if he finds her without binding. Late, use flank angles and Banshee's Veil or spell-shield timing to make her root miss before starting the real fight.
- Do not flag-drag in a straight line through Lucent Singularity; Lux will bind the landing.
- Cataclysm after Light Binding misses usually forces her Flash or death.
- Her shield can block your first burst, so keep enough cooldowns for a second hit.
- Banshee's Veil is especially valuable because one blocked binding can decide the duel.

MalphiteUnfavoured
Malphite's armor, attack-speed reduction, and shield blunt Jarvan's physical damage while he wins slow trades with magic damage and engage control.
Watch for Ground Slam: the attack-speed reduction cuts Jarvan's Martial Cadence follow-up and extended melee damage after the engage.
How to beat
Break Granite Shield with Dragon Strike or a quick Demacian Standard poke before committing; fighting through the shield wastes too much of your burst. Take short trades after Ground Slam is down, then back away before Seismic Shard lets him keep you in range. Do not Cataclysm unless Unstoppable Force is down or you are using it after he has already ulted, because he can choose the timing of the real fight better than you can.
Later Malphite is usually the better front-to-front teamfighter because Unstoppable Force starts fights through Jarvan's spacing. Jarvan should avoid side-lane stat checks into armor stacking and instead threaten flanks on carries after Malphite has used his ultimate.
- Always remove Granite Shield before spending Cataclysm damage.
- Ground Slam makes attack-speed items and passive follow-up much worse during its window.
- If Malphite uses Unstoppable Force to escape your wall, your teamfight engage is gone for little value.
- Magic resist helps more than it looks because his main duel damage is not physical.

MalzaharUnfavoured
Malzahar wins if he keeps space because Nether Grasp stops Jarvan IV's all-in and Null Zone punishes being trapped in place.
Watch for Nether Grasp suppresses Jarvan IV during his engage and lets Malzahar stack Null Zone and Malefic Visions damage while Jarvan cannot answer.
How to beat
Hold just outside Malefic Visions range and use E-Q as a punish when Malzahar wastes Call of the Void or walks forward without Voidling pressure. Do not Cataclysm first unless Nether Grasp is down or you have Quicksilver Sash ready, because the arena can trap you in Null Zone. If he uses Nether Grasp defensively and it is cleansed or interrupted by teammates in real fights, Jarvan can finish him quickly.
Later Malzahar is still favored in isolated side-lane duels if his ultimate is available, but Jarvan is much better at starting teamfights on Malzahar's backline. Build MR and a cleanse item if you must dive him, otherwise force him to use Nether Grasp on you while your team follows.
- Do not Cataclysm on top of Null Zone unless you are finishing him immediately.
- Clear or ignore the Voidling before committing so it does not add free damage during Nether Grasp.
- Bait Call of the Void sideways, then E-Q before Malefic Visions starts ticking.
- Quicksilver Sash changes the matchup more than raw magic resist.

Master YiEven
Jarvan IV can burst and armor-shred Master Yi early, but Yi wins extended autos if he dodges Dragon Strike with Alpha Strike and survives the first rotation.
Watch for Alpha Strike can make Jarvan IV miss Dragon Strike or avoid Cataclysm damage timing, turning Jarvan's engage into a losing auto-attack race.
How to beat
Open with Martial Cadence and short trades, then hold E-Q until Alpha Strike is used or Yi is locked into attacking. If Yi channels Meditate, stop wasting damage into it and use the pause to reposition for another passive hit and Dragon Strike. Commit when Alpha Strike is down and Golden Aegis can absorb the return DPS.
Later Master Yi usually outscales Jarvan in the side lane if he has time to auto, while Jarvan contributes more reliable initiation in teamfights. Late, trap Yi after Alpha Strike or peel him with Cataclysm terrain instead of dueling him on his terms.
- Do not throw E-Q at max range while Alpha Strike is available.
- Cataclysm is strongest after Alpha Strike, not before it.
- Golden Aegis slow does not matter during Highlander, so value the shield more than the slow.
- Break Meditate by waiting out its reduction rather than dumping your full combo into it.

Miss FortuneFavoured
Miss Fortune is fragile and immobile enough that Jarvan IV's E-Q into Cataclysm usually reaches her before she can finish a damage channel.
Watch for Bullet Time can shred Jarvan IV if he engages in a straight line and then stays in the cone.
How to beat
Approach from angles rather than through the wave, because Double Up and Make It Rain punish predictable paths. Save E-Q or Cataclysm to interrupt her spacing when she commits to Bullet Time or loses Strut. Once she is inside Cataclysm, stay to her side so she cannot get a full cone channel.
Later Miss Fortune's teamfight damage is far more important than her side-lane threat, and Jarvan remains one of the cleanest ways to stop it. In finished builds, do not chase her through peel alone; force Bullet Time early, then re-engage after it is canceled or repositioned.
- Any damage removes Strut, making your next E-Q much easier to land.
- Cataclysm behind her escape path so she cannot kite backward through Make It Rain.
- Do not line up behind minions for Double Up bounce damage before the all-in.
- If she starts Bullet Time, use displacement or terrain immediately instead of walking out slowly.

MorganaEven
Morgana can deny Jarvan IV's engage with Black Shield and Dark Binding, but Jarvan wins if he baits shield first and forces her to fight after cooldowns.
Watch for Black Shield blocks the E-Q knockup and Cataclysm follow-up control, making Jarvan's clean engage turn into a bad melee trade.
How to beat
Do not start with the obvious flag-combo while Black Shield is ready; walk up, threaten, and make her shield early. Sidestep Dark Binding before committing, because being rooted lets Tormented Soil and Soul Shackles tick for free. Once Black Shield or Dark Binding is down, Jarvan's physical burst still cuts through her well.
Later Morgana is harder to kill in grouped fights because Black Shield can protect the carry you want to trap. Jarvan should either force the shield on himself by diving Morgana or wait for it to be spent before Cataclysming the real target.
- Dragon Strike damage and armor shred still matter through Black Shield because they are physical, but the knockup does not.
- Never Cataclysm her while Soul Shackles is already attached unless you can kill before the stun.
- Dark Binding missing is your best engage signal.
- Black Shield on herself means her carry is vulnerable for your next engage.

NasusEven
Jarvan IV controls early trades with armor shred and burst, but Nasus wins longer duels once Siphoning Strike is stacked and Wither cuts Jarvan's attacks and movement.
Watch for Wither slows Jarvan's movement and attack speed over time, denying both disengage and the sustained autos needed after the initial combo.
How to beat
Trade early before Nasus has large Siphoning Strike stacks, using Q poke and Martial Cadence rather than standing in Spirit Fire. Hold E-Q as your exit when Wither starts ramping unless you are sure the all-in kills. If Nasus casts Fury of the Sands, kite out of the sandstorm and re-enter after its strongest window fades.
Later Nasus becomes the stronger side-lane duelist when farmed, while Jarvan's value shifts toward engaging fights before Nasus can walk through them. Do not handshake split push forever; force grouped plays, armor shred Nasus for your marksman, and save Cataclysm to separate him from carries.
- Do not fight inside Spirit Fire; the armor reduction swings the trade hard.
- Short trades are good before Wither ramps, long trades are bad after it lands.
- Cataclysm can trap Nasus, but it can also trap you inside Fury of the Sands.
- Punish him when he uses Siphoning Strike on minions and cannot immediately answer with the empowered hit.

NidaleeEven
Nidalee wins if she kites and lands long Javelin Tosses, but Jarvan IV wins decisively when E-Q connects before she can reset distance with cougar mobility.
Watch for Javelin Toss chunks Jarvan from long range and forces him to engage at too low health to survive the follow-up.
How to beat
Stay behind minions or off-angle from spear lanes, then look for E-Q when Nidalee swaps forms or uses Pounce forward. Do not chase through brush blindly, because Prowl and Bushwhack make her spacing much better. If you dodge the spear and keep enough health, Cataclysm forces her fragile kit into a melee fight she does not want.
Later Nidalee is better at poke and sideline evasion, while Jarvan is better at decisive teamfight starts. Late, do not spend everything on a full-health Nidalee unless her escape route is cut off; engage after a missed Javelin Toss or when she moves in cougar form to finish someone.
- A missed long-range Javelin Toss is the cleanest timer to advance.
- Bushwhack's resist shred makes even small cougar trades dangerous.
- Cataclysm is much stronger after she has used Pounce.
- Brush control matters more here than in most Jarvan duels.

Nunu & WillumpFavoured
Nunu is durable and annoying, but he lacks enough duel damage to beat Jarvan IV unless Jarvan stays in Absolute Zero or lets Ice Blast kite him forever.
Watch for Ice Blast slows both movement and attack speed, stretching the fight so Nunu can disengage, heal around minions, or set up Absolute Zero.
How to beat
Fight away from minions and monsters when possible so Consume cannot reset his health mid-duel. Use E-Q after Ice Blast or Blood Boil movement has been spent, then shield the return damage and walk out of Absolute Zero before it completes. Jarvan does not need to rush; repeated passive hits and armor shred eventually beat Nunu's low damage.
Later Nunu is rarely a true side-lane duelist, and Jarvan contributes more direct kill pressure. In teamfights, save displacement or Cataclysm positioning to force Nunu to cancel Absolute Zero or channel it in a bad spot.
- Do not fight next to a cannon wave or jungle camp if Consume is available.
- Golden Aegis helps absorb Ice Blast poke, but its slow is often less important than your E-Q timing.
- Walk out of Absolute Zero immediately; do not try to finish him through the full channel unless lethal.
- Blood Boil means he can kite longer than his melee tag suggests.

OlafUnfavoured
Olaf beats Jarvan IV in a straight extended duel because Ragnarok ignores Jarvan's control and Reckless Swing bypasses armor.
Watch for Ragnarok makes Olaf immune to Jarvan's knockup, slow, and Cataclysm control while giving him the window to run Jarvan down.
How to beat
Keep trades short before Olaf is low enough to abuse Berserker Rage, and never give him repeated Undertow pickups in a straight lane. Bait Ragnarok with a threatened E-Q or Cataclysm, then disengage rather than fighting through it. Re-enter only after Ragnarok ends or when Olaf has missed Undertow and cannot stick.
Later Olaf remains the stronger side-lane brawler, especially if he can force long chases. Jarvan should avoid isolated stat-checks and instead use teamfights to trap Olaf's backline or force Olaf to spend Ragnarok defensively before the real engage.
- Armor does not answer Reckless Swing, so health matters more than usual.
- Do not Cataclysm early; Ragnarok lets him ignore the control while you stay committed.
- If he misses Undertow and cannot pick up the axe, that is your best trade window.
- Low-health Olaf is often more dangerous, not less, because Berserker Rage and Vicious Strikes spike together.

PantheonUnfavoured
Pantheon wins early and mid duels by blocking Jarvan's first attack, stunning his engage, and unloading Heartseeker Strike before Jarvan's longer cooldowns return.
Watch for Aegis Protection can block Martial Cadence or a key basic attack, removing a large part of Jarvan's opening trade.
How to beat
Track Pantheon's passive before trading; pop Aegis Protection with a basic attack or Q poke before committing your full combo. Hold E-Q until after Aegis of Zeonia if possible, because his stun can interrupt your tempo and set up Heartseeker Strike. Your winning trades are after his passive is down and Heartseeker Strike is unavailable.
Later Jarvan scales into better teamfight initiation, while Pantheon's pure duel threat falls if he cannot snowball. In side lanes he can still punish careless engages, so force grouped fights where Cataclysm has more value than Grand Skyfall's arrival damage.
- Do not let Martial Cadence get eaten by Aegis Protection for free.
- Step out of Heartseeker Strike's cone instead of trading autos into it.
- If Pantheon uses Aegis of Zeonia first, you can E-Q as he backs out.
- Armor boots and early armor change his poke pattern a lot.

RammusUnfavoured
Rammus punishes Jarvan IV's physical auto-based follow-up with Defensive Ball Curl and Puncturing Taunt, making the duel poor unless Jarvan can disengage after a short burst.
Watch for Puncturing Taunt forces Jarvan to attack into Defensive Ball Curl, taking reflected damage while his armor is reduced.
How to beat
Do not take long auto trades while Defensive Ball Curl is active; hit with Dragon Strike armor shred and back away. Save E-Q to escape after Taunt ends rather than using it before Rammus has control of you. If he uses Powerball to enter and misses the collision, that is the only clean window to trade.
Later Rammus is not a fast split-push duelist, but he remains miserable for Jarvan to kill alone. In teamfights, Jarvan should avoid being the taunted target if possible and use Cataclysm to isolate carries while Rammus's cooldowns are pointed elsewhere.
- Stop attacking during Defensive Ball Curl when you can move again.
- Cataclysming Rammus often just locks you near Tremors and Taunt.
- Dragon Strike's armor reduction helps your team more than it makes the solo kill easy.
- Mercury's Treads reduce Taunt, but they do not solve reflected damage by themselves.

RyzeUnfavoured
Ryze's targeted root, rapid spell cycling, and spell vamp from Desperate Power make him favored if Jarvan cannot kill in one engage.
Watch for Rune Prison roots Jarvan at the edge of Ryze's range, stopping the follow-through after E-Q and letting Ryze chain Overload and Spell Flux.
How to beat
Do not walk straight into Rune Prison range without a plan; force Ryze to use it defensively, then engage after it expires. If Desperate Power is active, consider disengaging unless Ryze is already low, because his spell vamp turns close fights. Your best kill window is landing E-Q from fog or over terrain before he can start the root rotation.
Later Ryze becomes a stronger finished-build duelist and can shred trapped targets in Cataclysm. Jarvan's job becomes starting on Ryze with team follow-up or zoning him away from carries, not proving the 1v1 after Ryze has full mana and cooldowns.
- Rune Prison is targeted, so spacing outside its range matters more than dodging it.
- Do not trap yourself with him during Desperate Power unless the burst is lethal.
- Banshee's Veil can block the first spell and buy the engage window.
- Spell Flux magic resist reduction makes repeated spell trades worse than they look.

ShacoEven
Jarvan IV wins a direct fight, but Shaco can dodge the engage with Deceive, fear Jarvan with Jack In The Box, and turn the duel messy with Hallucinate.
Watch for Deceive lets Shaco avoid Dragon Strike or leave Cataclysm's kill setup, then reappear for Backstab damage.
How to beat
Do not throw E-Q at Shaco while Deceive is available unless you are forcing him away from an objective. Clear or avoid Jack In The Box setups before committing, because the fear gives Shaco time to attack from behind. Once Deceive is down and the clone is identified, Jarvan's raw stats and burst are favored.
Later Shaco avoids fair side-lane duels and looks for picks, while Jarvan is much more reliable in grouped fights. Keep vision on flanks and use Cataclysm to pin the real Shaco only after Deceive or Hallucinate has been spent.
- If Shaco walks into you without using Deceive, expect a Jack In The Box nearby.
- Cataclysm before Deceive is usually a wasted ultimate.
- Do not chase the clone through boxes; identify the real Shaco by behavior and damage taken.
- Martial Cadence helps check the real target once the clone confusion starts.

ShenEven
Shen is hard to kill through Feint and sustain, but Jarvan IV has better burst windows and can interrupt Shen's map play with Cataclysm pressure.
Watch for Shadow Dash taunts Jarvan and can either cancel his trade timing or let Shen escape after absorbing damage with Feint.
How to beat
Trade around Feint: use Q poke or a basic to draw the shield, then commit after it falls. Keep E-Q available if Shen has Shadow Dash, because using your mobility first lets him taunt through you and walk out. In a pure duel, take repeated short trades rather than trying to burst through every shield.
Later Shen often offers more map pressure with Stand United, while Jarvan offers harder engage in the actual fight. In side lane, Jarvan can pressure him but may not kill quickly; save Cataclysm or E-Q to interrupt, delay, or punish Shen when he tries to leave with his team ultimate.
- Do not dump your full combo into Feint unless you need the immediate armor shred.
- Shadow Dash missing is your best chance to keep him inside Cataclysm.
- Jarvan can force Shen to choose between dueling and channeling Stand United.
- Vorpal Blade sustain makes tiny poke trades less useful if you never commit after them.

SingedUnfavoured
Singed wins by refusing the clean duel, dragging Jarvan IV through Poison Trail and using Fling plus Insanity Potion to outlast the all-in.
Watch for Fling throws Jarvan behind Singed into Poison Trail, breaking Jarvan's spacing and making chase damage favor Singed.
How to beat
Do not chase directly through Poison Trail; cut angles and use E-Q to reposition rather than follow his exact path. Bait Fling before Cataclysm, because trapping Singed while he has Fling and Insanity Potion often traps you in his damage. Commit only when his ultimate is down or he is already low enough that the burst kills before the long run begins.
Later Singed is usually the better side-lane nuisance and can waste Jarvan's time without dying. Jarvan should answer waves, avoid long pursuits, and use teamfights to start past Singed instead of burning everything on the tank running through the front.
- Never measure the duel by whether you can catch him; measure it by how much Poison Trail you must walk through.
- Cataclysm can help teammates hit Singed, but alone it often keeps you near poison.
- Fling after your E-Q leaves you with no clean escape.
- Boots of Swiftness are unusually valuable into his repeated slows and chase pattern.

SionUnfavoured
Sion's targeted stun, shield burst, and Cannibalism lifesteal make extended melee duels difficult for Jarvan IV unless Jarvan times damage around Death's Caress.
Watch for Death's Caress absorbs Jarvan's initial burst and can detonate back, turning Jarvan's engage into Sion's winning trade.
How to beat
Do not spend Dragon Strike and Martial Cadence into a fresh Death's Caress if you can wait it out or force an early detonation. After Cryptic Gaze is used, E-Q away or re-engage depending on whether Cannibalism is active. If Cannibalism is running, disengage unless you have Grievous Wounds or lethal burst, because his autos will erase your progress.
Later Sion is the stronger stand-and-hit side-lane champion when Cannibalism is available. Jarvan has better backline access in teamfights, so avoid giving Sion a free drain duel and instead isolate priority targets or peel him during his ultimate.
- Back off when Death's Caress appears; hitting the shield is often exactly what Sion wants.
- Executioner's Calling is specifically valuable if you must duel through Cannibalism.
- Cryptic Gaze is targeted, so respect its range before starting E-Q.
- Cataclysm can trap Sion, but it also gives him guaranteed lifesteal targets if you stay.

SivirEven
Jarvan IV can kill Sivir if he forces Spell Shield first, but a well-timed shield and On The Hunt let her kite out of his only hard engage.
Watch for Spell Shield blocks Dragon Strike knockup or Cataclysm's targeted cast, denying the engage that Jarvan needs to reach her.
How to beat
Pressure with movement and Q threat until Sivir uses Spell Shield, then commit immediately while it is down. Avoid eating both hits of Boomerang Blade before the all-in, because that can put you too low to survive her autos. Cataclysm is strong after Spell Shield, but be ready for On The Hunt movement to turn the chase if you miss E-Q.
Later Sivir is stronger in grouped DPS and team mobility, while Jarvan remains a better fight starter. Late, do not dive her shield blindly; force Spell Shield with a lesser ability or teammate spell, then trap her before On The Hunt repositions the whole team.
- Dragon Strike can bait Spell Shield without spending Cataclysm.
- Do not stand in the return path of Boomerang Blade while closing distance.
- If Spell Shield eats Cataclysm, the duel can flip immediately.
- Her 425 range is short for a marksman, so punish last-hit windows more aggressively than against longer-range carries.

SkarnerEven
Jarvan IV can win short trades with armor shred and Martial Cadence, but Skarner wins if he keeps Crystalline Exoskeleton up and turns the fight into repeated Crystal Slash autos.
Watch for Crystalline Exoskeleton keeps Skarner fast and shielded, denying your burst window and letting him stick through Golden Aegis.
How to beat
Hold just outside his Q range and open with Q poke or E-Q only after his shield is damaged or down. If he activates Crystalline Exoskeleton before you commit, back off until the movement speed and attack speed are gone, then re-enter with Martial Cadence ready. Do not Cataclysm early unless Impale is down or you are sure you win the trapped stat-check.
Later Skarner becomes harder to duel once he has tank stats and cooldowns from Energize, while Jarvan has the stronger engage and backline access in teamfights. In side lane, keep trades short and leave before his second shield cycle; in fights, save Cataclysm for carries instead of locking yourself beside Skarner.
- Auto once after Q armor shred so Martial Cadence lands into reduced armor.
- Breaking Crystalline Exoskeleton removes his speed; that is your cue to kite backward with W slow.
- Cataclysm does not stop Impale from dragging you inside the arena if he casts it first.

SonaFavoured
Sona can poke and peel once, but she is too fragile to survive Jarvan IV's E-Q knockup into Cataclysm if Crescendo is unavailable or missed.
Watch for Crescendo stops your engage and buys enough time for Sona to heal, kite, or let teammates collapse.
How to beat
Approach from fog or from behind minions so she cannot freely tag you with Hymn of Valor and Power Chord. Bait Crescendo with E-Q threat, then commit once it is down; if she holds it, Cataclysm after the knockup so she has less room to line it up. In a pure duel, force her to spend Aria of Perseverance before your full burst lands.
Later Sona is not a side-lane duelist, but she heavily improves teamfights if left untouched. Jarvan should flank, force Crescendo defensively, and either finish her quickly or trap her carries away from her aura range.
- Watch Power Chord color: the damage-reduction chord can ruin your all-in timing.
- Cataclysm after Crescendo, not before, unless you are using it only to force her ultimate.
- Her 550 range matters before level 6; once you have ultimate, fog angles matter more than lane range.

SorakaFavoured
Soraka can silence and outlast sloppy trades, but Jarvan IV's physical burst and armor shred beat her once Astral Blessing is forced.
Watch for Infuse silences you during the engage, preventing E-Q or W timing and letting Soraka walk out of your damage window.
How to beat
Do not start with E-Q from max range if she is waiting to silence you mid-combo. Walk up, threaten Q and autos, force Astral Blessing, then re-engage when its armor buff is fading. Save Cataclysm until after Infuse or when she has no path to heal through your follow-up.
Later Soraka does not want the side-lane duel, but her global Wish can swing other fights while you chase her. In teamfights, Jarvan should either burst her before she chains Wish and Astral Blessing or trap a carry where Soraka cannot safely stand and heal them.
- Do not dump your whole combo into the Astral Blessing armor window.
- Infuse is the only thing that really interrupts your sequence; count it before committing.
- Wish means the duel can reset once, so leave enough health to finish after the heal.

TaricEven
Taric's armor aura, stun, and heal make him surprisingly hard to burst, but Jarvan IV has better damage windows if he avoids fighting into Shatter armor for too long.
Watch for Dazzle stuns you at the start of the trade, letting Taric land Shatter and Radiance before you can reposition.
How to beat
Respect his short-range stun and do not E-Q directly into him when Dazzle is ready unless you already know you win the all-in. Trade with Q armor shred, back out during his armor aura and heal cycle, then re-enter after Dazzle is spent. Cataclysm is strongest after he uses Shatter, because he has fewer defensive stats left for the trapped fight.
Later Taric is more valuable as a teamfight aura and point-click stun than as a side-lane threat, while Jarvan has better target access. In finished builds, do not waste full engage on Taric unless he is isolated; use Cataclysm to separate him from the carry he wants to protect.
- Shatter's armor makes your Martial Cadence burst noticeably worse.
- If Taric walks at you with Dazzle ready, hold E-Q until after the stun lands.
- Cataclysm can punish Taric only when his carry is not nearby to use his auras and heal.

TeemoUnfavoured
Teemo's blind, poison, movement speed, and mushrooms deny Jarvan IV's auto-based burst and make failed engages very punishing.
Watch for Blinding Dart removes your Martial Cadence and follow-up autos during the only window where you can kill him.
How to beat
Do not E-Q blindly through common mushroom paths; sweep with movement, minions, or known safe angles before committing. Force Blinding Dart with a short walk-up or Q poke, then all-in as the blind ends with E-Q, W slow, and Cataclysm. If he still has Move Quick and blind, disengage rather than chasing through Noxious Trap zones.
Later Teemo wins many side-lane setups if the area is trapped first, but Jarvan is much better in direct teamfight initiation. Group before the map is covered, engage from unwarded angles, and avoid using Cataclysm in a mushroom field unless the kill is immediate.
- Your passive auto is wasted if it lands during Blinding Dart.
- Golden Aegis can buy time for poison ticks, but it will not save a bad mushroom chase.
- Cataclysm pins Teemo only if he cannot blind-and-walk the fight out before your autos matter.

TristanaUnfavoured
Tristana has two strong disengages against Jarvan IV, so she wins if she saves Rocket Jump or Buster Shot for his engage instead of using them for damage.
Watch for Buster Shot knocks you out after you commit, wasting Cataclysm pressure and resetting Tristana to her preferred range.
How to beat
Hold E-Q until Rocket Jump is used or until you can knock her up before she reacts. If she has both Rocket Jump and Buster Shot, look for Q poke and short trades rather than a full Cataclysm. Commit only from fog or after she uses one escape aggressively, then layer Cataclysm after the knockback threat is gone.
Later Tristana outscales the side-lane duel once her range and attack speed are high, but Jarvan remains a serious teamfight threat if he reaches her from an angle. Do not frontally engage into her completed peel; flank and force Buster Shot before your carries commit damage.
- If she Rocket Jumps after your flag lands, do not chase unless Cataclysm guarantees contact.
- Cataclysm before Buster Shot often gives her a free reset; make her spend it first.
- Her passive range scaling makes the matchup worse the longer the game goes.

TryndamereUnfavoured
Jarvan IV can control the first burst window, but Tryndamere wins extended melee fights and ignores lethal damage with Undying Rage.
Watch for Undying Rage denies your execute window and lets Tryndamere keep attacking while you have no burst left.
How to beat
Trade before his Fury is full, then disengage with E-Q or W slow before he gets repeated critical strikes. Never use Cataclysm as your first lethal tool while Undying Rage is available; trap him only to force the ultimate, then leave the arena or kite until it ends. Re-engage after Undying Rage expires and Bloodlust healing has been reduced or baited.
Later Tryndamere becomes the stronger side-lane duelist and split-push threat, while Jarvan offers more reliable teamfight initiation. Match waves defensively, avoid isolated long fights, and force grouped fights where Tryndamere has to spend Undying Rage entering instead of chasing your backline.
- Fight him at low Fury, not after he has stacked Battle Fury on the wave.
- Mocking Shout cuts your attack damage if you turn away, so plan your retreat before he is on top of you.
- Cataclysm can trap you with an unkillable Tryndamere; use it as a delay tool, not a finisher.

Twisted FateFavoured
Twisted Fate can stun and poke, but he is too immobile to survive Jarvan IV's full engage if Pick A Card is baited or on cooldown.
Watch for Gold Card from Pick A Card stops your engage long enough for Twisted Fate to walk out or land Wild Cards safely.
How to beat
Do not dash in while he is visibly holding Gold Card unless you are already in kill range with Cataclysm. Pressure him to lock a card defensively, back off the stun, then E-Q as the card expires or after he throws it. Once he has used Pick A Card, your knockup into Cataclysm should force the duel decisively.
Later Twisted Fate avoids side-lane duels by using Gate and Destiny to move the map, not by beating Jarvan directly. Keep vision on flanks, punish his channel if you are nearby, and in teamfights save engage for the moment Gold Card is used on someone else.
- A held Gold Card is a warning to wait, not an invitation to combo.
- Cataclysm interrupts his ability to kite, but it does not matter if you eat Gold Card first.
- Destiny's slow can make your engage angle worse; close distance before he reveals you.

TwitchEven
Jarvan IV wins if he finds Twitch before stacks build, but Twitch can ambush, slow, and shred him if Jarvan misses the first knockup.
Watch for Ambush lets Twitch choose the opening, arrive with attack speed, and stack Deadly Venom before you can start your burst.
How to beat
Do not walk alone into likely Ambush angles without a ward or your combo ready. If Twitch appears, use Golden Aegis immediately to absorb the first poison stack burst and slow him, then E-Q before Venom Cask makes spacing impossible. Cataclysm is best after he commits Spray and Pray, because trapping him limits the line he wants to kite through.
Later Twitch is more dangerous in teamfights than side-lane duels because Spray and Pray can pierce your whole team. Jarvan should flank rather than front-line into him, force Ambush reveal with wards, and lock him down before he gets full poison stacks on multiple targets.
- A visible Twitch without Ambush is much easier to kill than one who opens on you.
- Do not wait until six poison stacks to shield; Expunge punishes late reactions.
- Cataclysm can protect your team by forcing Spray and Pray to fire from a bad angle.

VayneUnfavoured
Vayne is one of the hardest duelists for Jarvan IV because Tumble, Condemn, Final Hour stealth, and Silver Bolts all punish a predictable all-in.
Watch for Condemn knocks you out of melee range or into terrain, breaking your combo and turning Cataclysm into a losing cage.
How to beat
Do not cast Cataclysm near walls unless Condemn is down; she can stun you and win the trapped fight. Lead with Q poke and save E-Q for after Tumble or when she has no clean Condemn angle. If Final Hour is active, wait out the stealth Tumbles unless you have immediate knockup timing from fog.
Later Vayne wins the finished side-lane duel in most clean setups, especially with terrain nearby, while Jarvan's value shifts to forcing teamfight chaos. Engage from flanks, trap her only after Condemn is used, and build armor or attack-speed reduction so your team has time to finish her.
- Cataclysm near a wall gives Condemn its best possible target.
- If she Tumbles sideways from your flag line, cancel the chase instead of whiffing Q.
- Final Hour makes tracking her after knockup much harder; save W for when she reappears.

VeigarEven
Jarvan IV can kill Veigar quickly if he dodges Event Horizon, but one cage into Dark Matter and Primordial Burst can remove his engage window.
Watch for Event Horizon stuns you on the perimeter, stopping E-Q or trapping you long enough for Veigar's full burst.
How to beat
Approach diagonally and hold E-Q until Event Horizon is placed; never dash through the cage wall unless you know the stun is down. If he cages defensively, wait at the edge and re-engage the moment it expires. Once Event Horizon is gone, Cataclysm forces Veigar to fight without enough space to land Wild Cards-style spacing tools, and Jarvan's physical burst is faster.
Later Veigar's burst becomes more threatening late, but he still hates being engaged on without Event Horizon. Jarvan should build enough magic resistance to survive the first rotation, then force fights after cage is down or from fog where Veigar cannot pre-place it.
- Your E-Q path is predictable, so good Veigars cage the line rather than your current spot.
- Do not ult while standing on the cage edge; the stun can still decide the fight.
- Primordial Burst is less punishing to Jarvan than to AP champions, but its base damage is still lethal after Dark Matter.

WarwickUnfavoured
Warwick's sustain and suppression make extended duels bad for Jarvan IV unless Jarvan can burst him before Hungering Strike cycles repeat.
Watch for Infinite Duress suppresses you during your escape or kill attempt, giving Warwick guaranteed damage and healing time.
How to beat
Take short trades around Martial Cadence and Q armor shred, then back out before Warwick gets repeated autos and Hungering Strike value. Do not Cataclysm while Infinite Duress is up unless you are sure he dies before casting it; otherwise you trap yourself in his best fight. If you can bait his ultimate or cleanse it, re-engage immediately while his lockdown is gone.
Later Warwick becomes a stronger straight side-lane stat-checker, but Jarvan has better multi-target disruption in teamfights. Avoid isolated sustained fights, bring anti-sustain when you must match him, and use Cataclysm to control carries rather than spending everything on Warwick's drain tanking.
- His passive healing makes low-damage pokes worse for you than clean short trades.
- Q after your armor shred still does not stop Hungering Strike's sustain, so track his cooldown.
- If Infinite Duress is available, your escape combo must be ready before you drop low.

WukongEven
Both champions have armor shred and strong engage, so the duel swings on whether Jarvan IV hits the real Wukong after Decoy and avoids eating full Cyclone duration.
Watch for Decoy wastes your Q, Martial Cadence, or Cataclysm target selection and lets Wukong re-open with Crushing Blow.
How to beat
Do not instantly dump Dragon Strike after Wukong dashes in; wait a beat to see if he uses Decoy. If Decoy is down, Jarvan can win the next short trade with Q armor shred, passive auto, and W slow. Save Cataclysm for after Cyclone starts moving past you or after Decoy is unavailable, so he cannot turn your arena into a free knockup channel.
Later Wukong's teamfight ultimate can be stronger if he reaches multiple carries, while Jarvan is better at isolating one target. In side lane the duel stays playable but volatile; in 5v5, peel or counter-engage Cyclone if Wukong dives first, otherwise flank his backline before he does.
- If Wukong stops moving after trading, assume Decoy until proven otherwise.
- Your Q armor shred and his Crushing Blow make whoever lands first rotation very vulnerable.
- Cataclysm can keep Cyclone near your team, so use it carefully when his ultimate is active.

ZileanEven
Jarvan IV can catch and burst Zilean, but Time Warp and Chronoshift make the kill unreliable unless those cooldowns are forced first.
Watch for Chronoshift denies your all-in kill and revives Zilean after you have spent E-Q and Cataclysm.
How to beat
Stay outside Time Bomb poke range when your engage is down, then pressure him to use Time Warp defensively. Do not spend Cataclysm just to kill through Chronoshift; force the ultimate, disengage during the revive timer, then re-engage when he returns without it. If he uses Time Warp as a slow on you, answer with Golden Aegis and wait for a cleaner E-Q angle.
Later Zilean rarely wants a side-lane duel, but his revive can erase your best teamfight pick. Jarvan should force Chronoshift on a low-value target or delay damage until it expires, then use Cataclysm to keep the real target away from Zilean's second round of cooldowns.
- Double Time Bomb poke matters only if you let him kite before the all-in.
- Chronoshift is a cooldown to force, not a health bar to burst through blindly.
- Time Warp can make your E-Q miss from max range; engage from closer than usual.
