Kennen

The Heart of the Tempest

How this differs from the live game

  • Kennen's E provides defensive bonuses instead of Attack Speed
  • Kennen's R randomly strikes nearby champions

Magic penetration marks are for Kennen's real damage pattern: Q, W active, E and R all deal magic damage with AP ratios, so penetration improves the lane poke and the Flash-R burst. Armor seals cover most top-lane trading, MR glyphs protect against AP tops and jungle/mid magic damage, and AP quints strengthen early Q and W trades.

This is a 21/9/0 AP top page: deep offense gives CDR, AP, magic penetration, Archmage and Executioner for burst, while 9 defense gives enough health and resistances to survive ranged-top trades and all-ins.

  • Thundering Shuriken (Q) takes points at levels 1, 4, 5, 7, 9.
  • Electrical Surge (W) takes points at levels 2, 8, 10, 12, 13.
  • Lightning Rush (E) takes points at levels 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
  • Slicing Maelstrom (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.

Max Q first for the lowest-cooldown ranged poke and safest farming tool, then W for reliable marked-target damage before finishing E. The early Q-W-E points give poke, mark chaining and an escape before committing to heavy trading.

Alternative — Max W before Q when the lane lets you repeatedly auto-attack for Electrical Surge marks, especially into melee tops you can safely harass without relying on landing shurikens.

Why these items

  • Doran's ShieldHealth PotionYellow Trinket

Doran's Shield startDefault into physical top laners or auto-attack harass; the health regen and basic-attack block let Kennen keep lane control without being forced out.

  • Doran's RingHealth Potion2Yellow Trinket

Doran's Ring startUse when you expect a low-pressure lane and want stronger Q and W poke from level 1; the mana text is wasted on Kennen, but the AP and health were still a real greedy lane start.

  • Boots of SpeedHealth Potion4Yellow Trinket

Boots and potions startUse into skillshot-heavy lanes or dangerous junglers where early movement speed and extra potion sustain are more valuable than combat stats.

Corein buy order

  • 1

Sorcerer's Shoes1,100gSorcerer's Shoes add early magic penetration, which pairs with magic penetration runes and makes Q, W, E and R hit much harder before enemies stack MR.

  • 2

Zhonya's Hourglass3,260gZhonya's Hourglass is the defining Kennen item: it lets him Flash or E into the enemy team, cast Slicing Maelstrom, then stasis through the retaliation.

  • 3

Rylai's Crystal Scepter2,900gRylai's Crystal Scepter adds AP and health while making Kennen's repeated spell hits and ultimate zone harder to escape.

  • 4

Rabadon's Deathcap3,300gRabadon's Deathcap turns the mid-game utility build into real AP burst for Q poke and full ultimate damage.

Situationalonly when the game asks for it

  • Liandry's Torment2,900gBuy Liandry's Torment when enemies are stacking health or when you need stronger extended fight damage after Rylai's slows.

  • Abyssal Scepter2,560gBuy Abyssal Scepter earlier when the enemy top or mid is AP and fights happen inside your ultimate range, where the MR reduction aura is easy to apply.

  • Mercury's Treads1,200gUse Mercury's Treads instead of Sorcerer's Shoes against heavy crowd control or double-AP pressure that can stop your engage.

  • Ninja Tabi1,000gUse Ninja Tabi instead of Sorcerer's Shoes into oppressive AD auto-attack lanes or fed physical carries.

  • Guardian Angel2,750gBuy Guardian Angel late when you are the primary engage and one stasis is not enough to survive after starting the fight.

  • Deathfire Grasp3,100gBuy Deathfire Grasp when your team needs single-target pick burst before the teamfight rather than a slower Rylai's/Liandry's style.

A 21/9/0 attack-damage page: Fury's attack speed and Deadliness' scaling AD feed the on-hit pattern, Weapon Expertise and Sunder cut through the armor a top laner buys, and Butcher keeps the wave manageable while you are building attack speed instead of waveclear. The nine defensive points are the same health and resistances the AP build takes to survive top lane.

Slicing MaelstromR
  • Thundering Shuriken (Q) takes points at levels 4, 14, 15, 17, 18.
  • Electrical Surge (W) takes points at levels 1, 3, 5, 7, 9.
  • Lightning Rush (E) takes points at levels 2, 8, 10, 12, 13.
  • Slicing Maelstrom (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.

Max W first — it is the whole build. Every rank raises the on-hit bonus from 40% to 80% of total attack damage and shortens the active that adds a mark. E second for the lower Lightning Rush cooldown, which is how an attack-speed Kennen closes the gap and lands the third mark. Q last: it scales only with ability power, so this build takes one early point for the ranged mark and nothing more until the end.

Alternative — Max Q second against ranged tops you cannot walk up to, where the only marks you land are shurikens; this build still maxes W first in that matchup.

Why these items

Openingsall within the 475 starting gold

  • Doran's BladeYellow Trinket

Doran's Blade startDefault start: the attack damage feeds Electrical Surge's passive from level 1 and the health plus on-hit healing wins the auto-attack trades this build is built around.

  • Long SwordHealth Potion2Yellow Trinket

Long Sword startUse when you want the potions for a lane you expect to trade in repeatedly; the Long Sword is the first piece of The Brutalizer if you are buying it early.

  • Boots of SpeedHealth Potion4Yellow Trinket

Boots and potions startUse into skillshot-heavy lanes or an early-invading jungler, where the movement speed keeps you in auto-attack range without eating the trade back.

Corein buy order

  • 1

Berserker's Greaves900gBerserker's Greaves is the cheapest attack speed in the shop and attack speed is what turns Electrical Surge's on-hit into damage per second and marks into stuns.

  • 2

Wit's End2,150gWit's End adds attack speed, flat magic damage on hit and the magic resist that keeps a squishy ranged top alive into the AP tops this build has no stasis for.

  • 3

Blade of The Ruined King3,200gBlade of the Ruined King is the item that makes the build work against health stackers: percent-current-health on every hit, lifesteal for the extended trade, and an active that closes the gap Lightning Rush cannot.

  • 4

Guinsoo's Rageblade2,600gGuinsoo's Rageblade ramps attack speed and ability power on every attack and spell cast, so it pays both the AD on-hit passive and the AP active of the same ability.

  • 5

Frozen Mallet3,300gFrozen Mallet is the survivability and the stickiness at once — 700 health on a champion who has to stand in auto-attack range, and an on-hit slow that keeps a marked target there.

Situationalonly when the game asks for it

  • Ninja Tabi1,000gNinja Tabi instead of Berserker's Greaves against an AD top whose basic attacks are the lane; you give up the attack speed, so buy Recurve Bow earlier to compensate.

  • Mercury's Treads1,200gMercury's Treads instead of Berserker's Greaves when the crowd control chain, not the damage, is what kills you.

  • Madred's Bloodrazor3,800gMadred's Bloodrazor over Last Whisper when the enemy front line stacks health rather than armor — its 4% max-health magic damage on hit is not reduced by armor at all.

  • Executioner's Calling1,900gExecutioner's Calling against heavy healing or lifesteal; Grievous Wounds applies on every basic attack, which this build has more of than anyone.

  • Maw of Malmortius3,200gMaw of Malmortius over Wit's End against a single heavy magic-damage threat, when you need the shield and the missing-health attack damage more than the attack speed.

  • Ionic Spark1,950gIonic Spark as a cheap early attack speed and waveclear spike when the game is fast and you cannot afford to sit on components.

Attack speed marks are the top-lane Kennen page — in a duo lane the enemy support punishes you before the extra marks pay off.

A 21/9/0 marksman page. Offense buys attack speed, scaling attack damage, armor penetration and the critical strike damage the build's Infinity Edge is there to use; Butcher pays for the farm. One point in Q at level 1 for the ranged mark and the level-1 contest, then max W: its passive adds 40% to 80% of total attack damage to the marked hit, which is the only ability scaling this build's items pay for. Q second for the wave and the poke, E last — in a duo lane the escape matters more than the cooldown.

Alternative — Take the second point in E at level 4 against an all-in support, where Lightning Rush is the only way out of a hook or a flash engage.

  • Doran's BladeYellow Trinket

Doran's Blade startDefault bot start: the attack damage helps both the last hit and Electrical Surge's on-hit, and the health plus on-hit healing survives the level-1 and level-2 fights.

  • Long SwordHealth Potion2Yellow Trinket

Long Sword startUse when the lane is a poke matchup you expect to lose health in without dying — the potions carry you to the first recall and the Long Sword is not wasted gold.

Berserker's Greaves900gBerserker's Greaves first completed item: attack speed is what turns Electrical Surge's on-hit into damage per second and stacks Marks of the Storm toward the stun.

  • 2

Blade of The Ruined King3,200gBlade of the Ruined King is the power spike this build wins lane on — percent-current-health on every basic attack, lifesteal, and an active that both closes a gap and steals the movement speed a marksman cannot chase without.

  • 3

Infinity Edge3,800gInfinity Edge raises critical strikes to 250%, which is the only way a champion with no damage steroid catches up to a real Season 3 marksman.

  • 4

Phantom Dancer2,800gPhantom Dancer brings the build to 55% critical strike chance alongside Infinity Edge, and moving through units is how a 550-range carry finds attack range in a fight.

  • 5

Last Whisper2,300gLast Whisper once the front line buys armor — 35% armor penetration is worth more than another attack damage item against anyone who built against you.

Situationalonly when the game asks for it

  • Wit's End2,150gWit's End instead of Bloodthirster against an AP-heavy enemy team: the magic resist stacks on hit and the flat on-hit damage suits a champion whose own damage is already partly magic.

  • Mercurial Scimitar3,700gMercurial Scimitar when a single point-and-click lockdown decides whether you get to attack at all, and Cleanse was not enough.

  • Madred's Bloodrazor3,800gMadred's Bloodrazor over Last Whisper against a health-stacking front line — 4% of maximum health as magic damage on every hit ignores armor entirely.

  • Executioner's Calling1,900gExecutioner's Calling against heavy healing or lifesteal; the Grievous Wounds go on with every basic attack.

  • Statikk Shiv2,500gStatikk Shiv instead of Phantom Dancer when the game is about pushing waves and taking towers rather than winning the long fight.

  • Ahri

    AhriEven

Kennen can punish Ahri when Charm is down, but Spirit Rush lets her dodge the stun setup or disengage from Slicing Maelstrom.

Watch for Charm: if it catches Kennen during Lightning Rush or before he has three marks ready, Ahri gets the full Orb of Deception and Fox-Fire trade.

    How to beat

Hold minion-side spacing at 550 range and make Ahri spend Charm before you commit. Poke with Thundering Shuriken and charged W autos, then Lightning Rush in only when she has no Charm or Spirit Rush charge to break your ult radius.

Later Finished Ahri is better at picking isolated targets, while Kennen is stronger in grouped fights if he reaches multiple carries with Slicing Maelstrom. In side lane, avoid chasing through fog and force her to answer waves before looking for flank teleports or flash ult angles.

    • Do not Lightning Rush straight through the wave while Charm is up.
    • Spirit Rush can waste your Slicing Maelstrom hits by leaving the circle.
    • If Ahri uses Orb of Deception on the wave, step sideways and look for a mark trade.
    • A single mark on Ahri threatens W follow-up, so use it to make her hold Charm defensively.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsNegatron Cloak
  • Akali

    AkaliFavoured

Kennen’s range, repeated marks, and area damage make it hard for Akali to take clean Shadow Dance trades unless she catches him after Lightning Rush is spent.

Watch for Twilight Shroud: it denies target selection and lets Akali wait out your mark timing before re-engaging with Shadow Dance.

    How to beat

Abuse your 550 range before level 6 and keep Akali marked so Electrical Surge punishes every last-hit attempt. Save Lightning Rush for her Shadow Dance commit, then drop Slicing Maelstrom on the shroud area instead of chasing blindly through it.

Later Akali can kill isolated squishies faster, but Kennen controls clustered fights better and can reveal her position by forcing her to fight inside Maelstrom. In side lane, you still kite her well if you do not waste E before her first dash.

    • Do not spend W active unless Akali is already marked before she shrouds.
    • Stand outside Twilight Shroud and hit its edge with Slicing Maelstrom rather than walking into melee.
    • If Akali burns multiple Shadow Dance charges to stick, your stun window becomes decisive.
    • Early autos matter because she has no ranged answer before level 6.

    AlistarEven

Kennen rarely dies to Alistar in a clean duel, but Unbreakable Will makes it difficult to finish him through the engage window.

Watch for Pulverize: it stops Kennen inside melee range and guarantees Headbutt or Trample damage before he can kite out.

    How to beat

Keep max range and do not let Alistar walk into Pulverize range for free. Bait Headbutt or Pulverize, then kite backward with shuriken marks; only ult after Unbreakable Will is down or when you are using it to escape rather than kill.

Later Alistar is not trying to duel Kennen late; he is trying to peel or start fights. Kennen wins teamfights by entering after Alistar has used Pulverize and Headbutt, because ulting first often gets you displaced before the stun lands.

    • Lightning Rush through Alistar after Headbutt is used, not before.
    • Unbreakable Will removes your stun value and heavily cuts your damage.
    • Do not chase him under turret; Headbutt makes the reversal simple.
    • If he saves cooldowns for peel, attack his backline from a side angle.

  • Amumu

    AmumuFavoured

Kennen outranges and kites Amumu, but getting hit by Bandage Toss turns the duel into Amumu’s close-range damage and lockdown.

Watch for Bandage Toss: it removes your spacing and sets up Despair, Tantrum, and Curse of the Sad Mummy before you can freely kite.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions and punish Amumu whenever Bandage Toss is blocked or on cooldown. Keep Lightning Rush to break contact after his Q lands or to dodge it sideways, then re-enter with Slicing Maelstrom once he has no second way to stick.

Later Amumu becomes much more threatening in teamfights because Curse of the Sad Mummy can hold your whole engage in place. Kennen should flank after Amumu commits, not stack with teammates where one Amumu ult can stop both your teamfight plans.

    • Minions are your best defense against Bandage Toss.
    • Do not ult first if Curse of the Sad Mummy is still ready and you are in its radius.
    • His damage needs time in melee; short trades favor you.
    • If Amumu misses Q, you can mark-stun him before he walks out.

  • Anivia

    AniviaEven

Kennen has stronger all-in threat if he reaches Anivia, but her range, wall, stun, and egg make finishing the duel difficult.

Watch for Flash Frost: if Anivia lands the stun, she gets Frostbite burst and can place Glacial Storm or Crystallize to stop your chase.

    How to beat

Play just outside Flash Frost’s line and use Lightning Rush laterally, not straight forward, when she casts it. Trade with Q and W marks until her stun is down, then commit hard enough to kill the egg or do not spend Slicing Maelstrom at all.

Later Anivia controls side waves and defensive terrain better, while Kennen has the more explosive flank in full teamfights. Late, do not duel through her storm and wall setup; pressure fog angles and force her to choose between zoning your team or stopping your entry.

    • Killing Anivia once is not enough; track whether you can finish Rebirth.
    • Crystallize can trap you inside your own ult path if you enter from the front.
    • Do not chase through Glacial Storm after your stun is spent.
    • Her 600 range means you need minion cover to land Thundering Shuriken safely.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsNegatron Cloak
  • Annie

    AnnieUnfavoured

Annie’s longer attack range and instant stun burst make the duel dangerous before Kennen can stack marks cleanly.

Watch for Pyromania with Summon: Tibbers: the stored stun turns Annie’s ult into instant lockdown and burst before Kennen can complete his own stun cycle.

    How to beat

Respect her stun counter and do not trade when Pyromania is ready unless you are outside Tibbers range. Poke with Thundering Shuriken when she uses spells on the wave, then commit only after stun is down or when you can flash ult before she reacts.

Later Annie remains faster at deleting one target, but Kennen brings better multi-target lockdown if he enters from fog. In grouped fights, wait for Annie to show her stun or spend Tibbers before diving the backline.

    • Her 625 range lets her tag you before your auto range answers.
    • A visible four-stack Pyromania means you should give ground immediately.
    • Lightning Rush does not beat instant Tibbers if you enter predictably.
    • If Annie misses W or uses Q to farm without stun, that is your short trade window.

  • Ashe

    AsheFavoured

Kennen can dodge or absorb Ashe’s linear engage and wins if he reaches ult range before Frost Shot kites him out.

Watch for Enchanted Crystal Arrow: it stops Kennen’s engage and gives Ashe enough time to chain Volley and Frost Shot spacing.

    How to beat

Stand off the direct arrow line and use minion waves to limit Volley poke. When Arrow is down or misses, Lightning Rush through the wave, tag her with marks, and force Slicing Maelstrom before she can kite with repeated Frost Shot autos.

Later Ashe scales as a backline marksman and is better in extended front-to-back fights, while Kennen wins by flanking her before she can free-hit. Side lane favors Kennen if he has E and ult, but do not walk straight into Arrow from fog.

    • Do not open with Lightning Rush from maximum distance while Arrow is ready.
    • Her 600 range beats your autos, so use Q angles rather than raw right-click trades.
    • Once Ashe is stunned, she has no dash to leave Slicing Maelstrom.

  • Blitzcrank

    BlitzcrankFavoured

Kennen wins at range, but Rocket Grab can turn one positioning mistake into Blitzcrank’s full knockup and silence chain.

Watch for Rocket Grab: it drags Kennen into melee and removes the spacing that makes the matchup favorable.

    How to beat

Keep minions between you and Blitzcrank, and punish him hard whenever Rocket Grab misses. Save Lightning Rush for after Overdrive or Grab is used, then kite out Power Fist and stun him before Mana Barrier buys too much time.

Later Blitzcrank is not a real side-lane duelist, but his pick threat can stop Kennen from setting up flanks. In teamfights, approach from angles with vision control so he cannot hook you before Slicing Maelstrom starts.

    • Never stand in a clear hook lane just to land Thundering Shuriken.
    • Mana Barrier can make your first all-in look lethal when it is not.
    • If Blitzcrank uses Overdrive forward without hook, mark him and back up.
    • Your ult punishes him if he hooks you into multiple enemies, but only if you survive the first chain.

  • Brand

    BrandEven

Both champions can burst each other, with Kennen needing to dodge Brand’s stun setup before committing into close range.

Watch for Sear on a Blazed target: it stuns Kennen and lets Brand land Pillar of Flame plus Pyroclasm before Kennen can finish marks.

    How to beat

Avoid standing in minions when Brand has Pyroclasm and sidestep after any Blaze application because Sear becomes the real threat. Commit with Lightning Rush only after Sear misses or is forced defensively, then stay close enough for Maelstrom but not beside extra bounce targets.

Later Brand’s grouped damage is brutal if teams clump, while Kennen has better engage control if he reaches the backline first. Late fights are about spacing: do not give Pyroclasm easy bounces, and use Zhonya’s during your ult after Brand’s first rotation starts.

    • A raw Sear is just damage; a Sear after Blaze is the stun that decides the duel.
    • Do not ult Brand next to a minion wave if Pyroclasm is ready.
    • Pillar of Flame has a delay, so Lightning Rush should dodge sideways rather than forward.
    • If Brand spends Conflagration on the wave, his instant Blaze setup is weaker.

  • Cho'Gath

    Cho'GathEven

Kennen can kite Cho'Gath for most of the fight, but one Rupture into silence and Feast makes the all-in risky.

Watch for Feral Scream: it silences Kennen during his engage, delaying Electrical Surge, Lightning Rush recast movement, and Slicing Maelstrom follow-up timing.

    How to beat

Hold outside Rupture zones and punish Cho'Gath after he misses Q, since he has no dash to force contact. Do not Lightning Rush directly into Feral Scream range unless you already have marks stacked or enough damage to finish before Feast range matters.

Later Cho'Gath becomes harder to kill in side lane and can survive long enough to force Kennen away with Feast threat. Kennen should usually shove and join teamfights, where his backline access matters more than burning a finished tank.

    • Rupture’s slow makes Feast range much easier for him to reach.
    • Silence can stop the W active that would complete your stun.
    • Do not spend full burst into a tank Cho'Gath unless his team cannot follow.
    • Your best window is immediately after Rupture misses.

  • Corki

    CorkiEven

Corki’s mixed sustained damage contests Kennen well, but he is vulnerable if Valkyrie is forced before Kennen commits.

Watch for Valkyrie: it lets Corki leave Slicing Maelstrom and turns Kennen’s all-in into a failed engage if used late.

    How to beat

Trade around minions with Thundering Shuriken and avoid standing in Gatling Gun long enough for armor shred to matter. Bait Valkyrie with Lightning Rush pressure, then commit with Slicing Maelstrom after he has no long escape.

Later Corki outdamages Kennen in extended marksman-style fights, while Kennen wins by stunning him before he can kite. In teamfights, attack from the side so Corki must Valkyrie away from his team or eat your full ult.

    • Do not chase through Valkyrie’s burning trail during your own ult.
    • Missile Barrage poke can break you down before the duel starts.
    • If Corki uses Valkyrie aggressively, he is very punishable.
    • His autos include true damage, so pure armor is less efficient than against normal marksmen.

  • Dr. Mundo

    Dr. MundoUnfavoured

Kennen can kite Dr. Mundo early, but Mundo’s health, cleaver slows, and Sadism make him difficult to finish in a straight equal-item duel.

Watch for Sadism: it lets Dr. Mundo regenerate through Kennen’s burst window and keep running him down after Slicing Maelstrom ends.

    How to beat

Keep maximum range and dodge Infected Cleaver rather than trying to trade after it lands. Harass him before Sadism is available, and once it is up, save Lightning Rush to disengage the ultimate instead of spending everything into his healing.

Later Mundo usually wins the side lane by outlasting Kennen and forcing repeated cleaver checks. Kennen’s job late is to avoid the long duel, apply Grievous Wounds if needed, and look for teamfight stuns on Mundo’s carries instead of burning ult only on him.

    • If Infected Cleaver lands, do not answer with an all-in unless Sadism is down.
    • Your stun interrupts his chase tempo but does not solve his healing by itself.
    • Morellonomicon matters only when you can damage him below 40% Health.
    • Kite around minions so cleavers are harder to thread.

  • Evelynn

    EvelynnEven

Kennen wins if he survives Evelynn’s opener, but camouflage lets her choose fights when Lightning Rush or vision is missing.

Watch for Shadow Walk opener: Evelynn starts the duel from close range, denying Kennen the poke time he normally needs.

    How to beat

Treat missing Evelynn as already in flank range and keep Lightning Rush until she reveals. Once she commits with Ravage or Agony's Embrace, run through her with E, stack marks quickly, and turn with Slicing Maelstrom before she can reset spacing with Dark Frenzy speed.

Later Evelynn is better at finding isolated picks, while Kennen is much stronger when both teams are grouped and vision limits her approach. Buy vision tools when the matchup is about side-lane safety and flank denial, then force fights where your ult covers her target path.

    • Do not spend Lightning Rush to farm when Evelynn is unseen.
    • Her reveal range means wards and tight spacing matter more than lane poke.
    • Agony's Embrace slow can keep you in her damage if E is down.
    • If she opens inside your team, Slicing Maelstrom punishes her lack of escape.

  • Ezreal

    EzrealEven

Ezreal can kite and poke Kennen with Mystic Shot, but Kennen wins if Arcane Shift is forced before Maelstrom starts.

Watch for Arcane Shift: it dodges Thundering Shuriken or exits Slicing Maelstrom, breaking Kennen’s stun and damage sequence.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions to reduce Mystic Shot uptime and trade when Ezreal uses Q on the wave. Pressure with Lightning Rush to force Arcane Shift, then hold your real commit until that escape is down or he shifts into a wall-side angle.

Later Ezreal is safer in side lanes and can poke before fights, while Kennen has the stronger decisive engage. Late, avoid being chipped down before objectives and look for flank paths that make Arcane Shift insufficient to leave your ult radius.

    • Minion cover denies Mystic Shot cooldown refunds on you.
    • Do not throw Q at an Ezreal who is clearly holding Arcane Shift for it.
    • If he Arcane Shifts forward, stun him immediately; that is his punish window.
    • Trueshot Barrage is more dangerous as pre-fight damage than as duel burst.

  • Fiddlesticks

    FiddlesticksUnfavoured

Fiddlesticks’ fear, silence, drain, and Crowstorm punish Kennen for entering without a clean interrupt window.

Watch for Terrify: it stops Kennen during Slicing Maelstrom setup and lets Fiddlesticks Drain or Crowstorm while Kennen cannot control spacing.

    How to beat

Stay outside Fiddlesticks’ short range until Terrify or Dark Wind is used, then interrupt Drain with your stun rather than wasting damage into his healing. If he channels Crowstorm from fog, disengage first with Lightning Rush and re-enter only after the burst zone is no longer centered on you.

Later Fiddlesticks and Kennen both want flank teamfights, but Fiddlesticks punishes grouped teams harder if unseen. Kennen should control vision, hold Zhonya’s for Crowstorm overlap, and engage after Fiddlesticks reveals or is forced to fear someone else.

    • Do not duel him in fog; Crowstorm changes the fight before you see it.
    • Dark Wind silence can delay the W active that would stun him out of Drain.
    • Your stun is best saved to break Drain or stop his channel follow-up.
    • Mercury's Treads reduce the fear window enough to escape his damage.

  • Gangplank

    GangplankEven

Kennen controls range and trades, but Gangplank can cleanse the stun with Remove Scurvy and punish with Parrrley plus sustained melee damage if he reaches him.

Watch for Remove Scurvy: it clears Mark of the Storm’s stun, denying Kennen’s all-in timing and healing Gangplank through the trade.

    How to beat

Poke with autos, Q, and W to make Gangplank use Remove Scurvy before you spend Slicing Maelstrom. Keep enough distance that Parrrley is his only reliable damage, then commit after the cleanse is down or when he is too low for the heal to matter.

Later Gangplank can pressure side lanes and influence fights with Cannon Barrage, while Kennen is the stronger direct teamfight engager. Late, do not rely on one stun to kill him; force his cleanse, then use your ult on carries who cannot Remove Scurvy out.

    • Track Remove Scurvy before counting on a three-mark stun.
    • Parrrley trades are point-and-click, so avoid repeated short poke wars at his range.
    • Cannon Barrage can slow your flank path before you reach the backline.
    • If he uses Raise Morale to run at you, Lightning Rush away first and turn after it fades.

  • Garen

    GarenFavoured

Kennen wins if he keeps Garen at arm's length, because Garen has to run straight through poke and Marks before he can threaten the execute.

Watch for Decisive Strike lets Garen break slows and force the silence window that stops Kennen from stunning or using Lightning Rush cleanly.

    How to beat

Hold just outside Decisive Strike range and keep tagging him so Perseverance does not reset the lane. When he spends Decisive Strike and fails to connect, step back in for Q, empowered W, and autos, then save Lightning Rush for the next speed burst or Judgment chase. Commit with Slicing Maelstrom only when his silence is down or he is already carrying two Marks.

Later Kennen still controls side-lane spacing, but Garen becomes harder to kill through tank items and Demacian Justice punishes low-health all-ins. In teamfights Kennen is far more valuable, so avoid long side fights and use flank ultimates where Garen cannot simply silence you first.

    • Hit him often enough to keep Perseverance disabled.
    • Do not use Lightning Rush just to trade damage while Decisive Strike is ready.
    • If he starts Judgment after missing Q, kite backward and punish when the spin ends.
    • Do not stay in lane at execute health; Demacian Justice changes otherwise won trades.

  • Gragas

    GragasEven

Kennen can harass Gragas, but Body Slam and Explosive Cask give Gragas enough displacement to punish bad spacing and break Kennen's all-in.

Watch for Body Slam is the engage and interrupt that lets Gragas turn a poke pattern into a point-blank burst trade.

    How to beat

Play at max shuriken range and angle away from minion lines so Body Slam has to be obvious. Bait Body Slam first; if it misses, Gragas cannot easily stop you from stacking Marks and using Slicing Maelstrom. Respect Explosive Cask when committing, because it can knock you out of your own ultimate or into his barrel follow-up.

Later Finished Gragas is harder to pin down in a side lane and can disengage your ultimate with Explosive Cask. Kennen usually has the better teamfight if he finds a flank after Gragas has used cask or if Zhonya's lets the storm continue through the counterburst.

    • Stand diagonally from Barrel Roll so dodging Q does not walk you into Body Slam.
    • Do not Lightning Rush directly at him while Body Slam is available.
    • If Explosive Cask is down, your ultimate is much harder for him to answer.
    • Keep trades short enough that Happy Hour does not erase slow poke for free.

  • Heimerdinger

    HeimerdingerEven

Kennen has the mobility and stun threat to kill Heimerdinger, but turret zones and grenade punish direct approaches.

Watch for CH-1 Concussion Grenade stuns on the center hit and gives Heimerdinger time for turrets and rockets to shred the engage.

    How to beat

Do not fight inside multiple H-28G Evolution Turrets unless you are already committing to a stun. Clear or thin turrets with Q and autos from the edge, then look for Lightning Rush only after grenade is missed or forced defensively. If Heimerdinger sits in a turret nest, farm and call the fight elsewhere instead of bleeding health into his setup.

Later Heimerdinger remains annoying in sieges, but Kennen's flank engage is more decisive in real teamfights. In side lane, Kennen can threaten him when turrets are down; when they are set up, rotate first and make Heimerdinger move.

    • A marked Heimerdinger cannot safely stand behind turrets if Electrical Surge is ready.
    • Do not ult while blinded or stunned by grenade unless Zhonya's covers the return damage.
    • Fight him in river or lane transitions, not in a prepared turret pile.
    • Turrets can block careless shuriken lines.

  • Janna

    JannaFavoured

In a pure duel Janna lacks the damage to beat Kennen, but her shields, knockup, and Monsoon make actually finishing her awkward.

Watch for Monsoon knocks Kennen out of Slicing Maelstrom and resets the all-in with healing and distance.

    How to beat

Walk her down patiently and do not spend Slicing Maelstrom until Howling Gale or Monsoon is unavailable, interrupted, or not enough to save her. Stay close enough for W follow-up after the first Mark, but do not chase through charged tornado paths. In real games, treat her as a peel target rather than a champion you should be dueling often.

Later Janna will not beat Kennen in side lane, but she can deny his teamfight engage better than many supports. Look for flank angles onto carries where Janna has to choose between saving herself and peeling the backline.

    • Save Lightning Rush to re-enter after Monsoon pushback.
    • Do not telegraph a straight-line ultimate through Howling Gale.
    • Her Eye Of The Storm can block your poke but not stop Mark stacking forever.
    • If she uses Monsoon early, immediately re-mark her before she leaves range.
  • Jarvan IV

    Jarvan IVUnfavoured

Jarvan can force Kennen into melee with his engage and arena, and Kennen must play the cooldowns perfectly to avoid being burst before his stun cycle wins.

Watch for Cataclysm traps Kennen in Jarvan's melee range and removes the spacing Kennen needs to win the duel.

    How to beat

Keep minions between you and Jarvan's walking autos, but do not stand where Dragon Strike plus Demacian Standard cleanly tags you. Bait the flag combo, then punish its cooldown with Q, W, and autos while saving Lightning Rush for Cataclysm or Golden Aegis slow. If he ults while your stun and Slicing Maelstrom are ready, you can turn it; if not, you usually have to disengage immediately.

Later Jarvan threatens side-lane picks because Cataclysm guarantees contact, while Kennen offers the stronger multi-target fight if he is not isolated first. Group with vision and flank after Jarvan commits, or use Zhonya's during the arena fight to deny his burst window.

    • Do not use Lightning Rush for poke while Cataclysm is ready.
    • Punish missed Demacian Standard plus Dragon Strike immediately; that is his real gap close.
    • Keep a Mark on him before he commits so your stun arrives faster inside Cataclysm.

  • Jax

    JaxUnfavoured

Kennen can kite early, but Jax's Leap Strike, Counter Strike mitigation, and scaling attack speed make equal-item duels dangerous once he reaches you.

Watch for Counter Strike reduces Kennen's area damage and sets up the stun that lets Jax stay on top of him after Leap Strike.

    How to beat

Hold outside Leap Strike range and harass only when you can retreat before Counter Strike finishes. If Jax activates Counter Strike, stop relying on autos, kite the stun radius, and save Lightning Rush until after Leap Strike is used. Commit only when Counter Strike is down and you can chain Marks before he gets sustained hits with Grandmaster's Might.

Later Jax outscales Kennen in the side lane and will usually win extended finished-item duels. Kennen should stop matching him alone unless ahead, clear waves safely, and look for teamfight ultimates where Jax has to enter grouped targets.

    • Do not feed Counter Strike with extra autos when he is walking at you.
    • Your best kill window is after Leap Strike and Counter Strike are both down.
    • Keep enough distance that Jax must choose between farming and holding Leap Strike for you.

  • Karthus

    KarthusFavoured

Kennen has the mobility to dodge Lay Waste and the burst-stun pattern to kill Karthus before Defile wins an extended brawl.

Watch for Wall of Pain slows Kennen and lowers his defenses, making repeated Lay Waste hits and Defile uptime much more dangerous.

    How to beat

Keep moving laterally and trade after Karthus misses Lay Waste, especially when he steps up to last-hit. Avoid standing in Defile longer than needed; apply Marks, stun, burst, then leave his body if Death Defied triggers. Save enough health after a kill to survive Requiem or the final passive casts.

Later Kennen remains favored in side-lane picks if he can dodge Qs, but Karthus scales into huge teamfight and post-death damage. In grouped fights, use Zhonya's to survive inside your ultimate and do not chase so deep that Death Defied and Requiem trade you back.

    • Lightning Rush makes Lay Waste spacing much easier, but do not rush straight down Wall of Pain.
    • After killing him, immediately exit Defile range before spending time on the wave.
    • Do not all-in at low health unless Requiem is down.

  • Kassadin

    KassadinUnfavoured

Before repeated Riftwalks Kennen can pressure Kassadin, but equal-item Kassadin resists magic damage, silences the combo, and eventually controls when the duel starts.

Watch for Null Sphere silences Kennen during the exact window he needs to stack Marks or activate Slicing Maelstrom defensively.

    How to beat

Punish Kassadin before level 6 by spacing autos and Qs so he pays for every last-hit. After Riftwalk, never waste Lightning Rush forward unless Null Sphere is down; hold it to answer his jump and avoid being silenced in melee. Your kill window is when Riftwalk stacks are low, Null Sphere is used on the wave or shield trade, and you already have a Mark set up.

Later Kassadin usually wins the side-lane duel because he can choose short trades and leave before Kennen completes a stun. Kennen's answer is grouped teamfighting: force objectives, control flanks, and use ultimate on Kassadin's team rather than chasing him through Riftwalks.

    • Early autos matter because Void Stone only reduces magic damage.
    • Do not start Slicing Maelstrom into a ready Null Sphere unless you are already in stun range.
    • Track Riftwalk mana pressure; his worst fights are after repeated jumps.
    • Keep waves pushed before level 6 so he cannot scale for free.

Kennen's reliable Mark stun gives him a direct answer to Katarina's channel, so she struggles to finish a fair duel unless Kennen wastes crowd control.

Watch for Death Lotus can erase Kennen if he has no stun prepared or lets Katarina channel after Shunpo.

    How to beat

Keep one Mark or empowered W ready before stepping into Shunpo range. If Katarina jumps in, do not panic Lightning Rush away first; stack the stun and interrupt Death Lotus as soon as she commits. Trade around her cooldowns, because without Death Lotus channel time she loses the sustained duel.

Later Katarina is more dangerous in messy teamfights with resets, but Kennen is one of the better champions at denying her first channel. Hold a stun for her entry unless your own flank wins the fight immediately.

    • Do not spend Electrical Surge on minions if Katarina is looking to Shunpo in.
    • Slicing Maelstrom punishes Death Lotus because she has to stand still.
    • If she uses Shunpo defensively, chase only until your next Mark cycle, then back off.

Kennen can burst and stun Kayle, but Righteous Fury lets her match range and Intervention can blank his decisive ultimate damage.

Watch for Intervention makes Kayle immune during Kennen's all-in, wasting Slicing Maelstrom if he commits too early.

    How to beat

Respect Righteous Fury as her real trading window; when it is active, kite back and use Q rather than standing in extended autos. Force Kayle to use Intervention with a partial combo, then disengage with Lightning Rush and re-enter after the immunity ends. Commit only if she has no ultimate or is already stunned before she can cast it.

Later Kayle scales into a stronger sustained side-lane duelist if she can keep attacking, while Kennen has the more explosive engage. In teamfights, try to force Intervention on Kayle or an ally before your main ultimate value, or stun her during Righteous Fury so she cannot free-hit.

    • Do not unload every spell into Intervention; count the invulnerability first.
    • When Righteous Fury is down, she is much easier to space as a melee champion.
    • Reckoning's slow can stop your retreat, so save Lightning Rush if she still has Q.
    • A pre-set Mark makes it harder for Kayle to ult before the stun lands.

  • Kog'Maw

    Kog'MawEven

Kennen can kill Kog'Maw if he gets inside storm range, but Bio-Arcane Barrage gives Kog'Maw enough reach and damage to punish failed approaches.

Watch for Bio-Arcane Barrage extends Kog'Maw's attack range and adds percent-health magic damage, letting him win the fight before Kennen reaches stun range.

    How to beat

Do not trade autos while Bio-Arcane Barrage is active unless Kog'Maw is already marked and threatened by stun. Approach from fog or after Void Ooze is down, because the slow makes Lightning Rush much less decisive. Once you commit, burst fully and be ready to leave Icathian Surprise after the kill.

Later Kog'Maw becomes a stronger front-to-back damage dealer than Kennen in side-lane-style extended fights, but he is vulnerable to flank ultimates. Kennen should not walk at him through his team; come from the side, force peel cooldowns, and use Zhonya's after reaching him.

    • Track Bio-Arcane Barrage duration; fighting just after it ends changes the duel.
    • Sidestep Void Ooze before using Lightning Rush so you do not spend E inside the slow trail.

Lee Sin wins if Sonic Wave lands because his follow-up burst and Dragon's Rage can displace Kennen out of his preferred stun timing.

Watch for Sonic Wave / Resonating Strike marks Kennen for Lee Sin's gap close and execute-style follow-up damage.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions and make Sonic Wave hit the wave before you ever commit. If Lee Sin misses Q, punish hard with ranged Marks, but keep Lightning Rush for Tempest slow or Dragon's Rage displacement. If he lands Sonic Wave, prepare to stun during his second Q arrival rather than running in a straight line.

Later Lee Sin's side-lane threat falls if he cannot burst Kennen quickly, but he remains dangerous at finding kicks that ruin Kennen's engage. In teamfights, enter after Lee Sin shows or use Zhonya's to deny the kick-burst window inside Slicing Maelstrom.

    • Minions are your best defense against Sonic Wave.
    • Do not chase him near wards or allies he can Safeguard to.
    • Stunning him as Resonating Strike arrives can flip the duel.
    • Dragon's Rage can kick you out of your own storm radius, so angle your engage carefully.

  • Leona

    LeonaFavoured

Leona cannot usually kill Kennen alone without allied Sunlight procs, and Kennen can kite her after her engage cooldowns are spent.

Watch for Zenith Blade is the engage that puts Leona in range for Shield of Daybreak and Solar Flare follow-up.

    How to beat

Stay outside Zenith Blade range and punish her every time she misses it, because she has no ranged threat afterward. If she connects, use Lightning Rush after the stun chain starts to end, then turn with Marks once Eclipse is wearing off. Do not waste full burst into Eclipse unless you need the stun to escape.

Later Leona still is not a side-lane duelist, but she becomes a serious teamfight problem because her crowd control can stop Kennen's flank. Wait for Zenith Blade or Solar Flare to be used, then enter from a side angle where she cannot instantly peel you.

    • Her passive adds no damage in a true 1v1 unless allies are there to trigger Sunlight.
    • Punish missed Zenith Blade immediately; walking away is not enough value.
    • Eclipse makes her deceptively tanky, so delay burst until it falls if possible.
    • Mercury's Treads can matter if her team has follow-up, but the duel itself is mostly spacing.

  • Lulu

    LuluEven

Kennen has higher all-in damage, but Lulu's shield, polymorph, slow, and Wild Growth make it difficult to complete a clean burst.

Watch for Whimsy disables Kennen during his engage, stopping the spell chain that would otherwise lead to a Mark stun.

    How to beat

Trade at max range with Q and autos, and do not Lightning Rush straight in while Whimsy is ready. Try to force Help, Pix! with poke before committing; then engage after Glitterlance misses or is used to farm. If she holds Wild Growth, bait it with a partial combo and re-engage after the bonus health and knockup no longer deny your burst.

Later Lulu will rarely beat Kennen quickly in side lane, but she can stall him and is excellent at denying his teamfight impact. Kennen should look for multi-target flanks that force Lulu to spend Wild Growth on someone other than the carry he is reaching.

    • Whimsy is more important than her damage; count it before all-ins.
    • Do not chase through Glitterlance slow without Lightning Rush available.
    • A shielded Lulu can still be stunned if you keep Mark timing clean.
    • Wild Growth can interrupt your close-range burst with its knockup.

  • Lux

    LuxEven

Lux outranges Kennen and can punish a bad approach, but if Light Binding misses Kennen has the mobility and stun threat to all-in her.

Watch for Light Binding roots Kennen long enough for Lucent Singularity and Finales Funkeln to land before he can reach storm range.

    How to beat

Play behind minions and bait Light Binding before using Lightning Rush aggressively. Once Q is down, close the gap fast, because Lux has limited tools to stop Slicing Maelstrom if you are already on top of her. Do not take repeated Lucent Singularity poke while waiting; either dodge and trade or reset the wave.

Later Lux is stronger at siege and pick range, while Kennen is stronger if he gets a flank into grouped enemies. In side lane, the duel stays skill-based: Binding hit means Lux wins, Binding missed means Kennen can force the kill.

    • Never start the all-in through open space while Light Binding is ready.
    • Lucent Singularity slow can make your E path predictable, so dodge sideways first.
    • If Prismatic Barrier is used early, wait for the return shield before calculating lethal.
    • Finales Funkeln is easiest for her after Binding; without Q she has to guess your movement.

  • Malphite

    MalphiteEven

Kennen can harass Malphite, but Seismic Shard and Unstoppable Force give Malphite reliable ways to force contact and survive long enough to trade back.

Watch for Unstoppable Force instantly closes the gap and knocks Kennen up, often deciding the duel before Kennen can kite or stun.

    How to beat

Break Granite Shield with light poke before spending real cooldowns, then keep enough distance that Seismic Shard does not start a free chase. Hold Lightning Rush for after his Q slow or ultimate, not for random damage. If Unstoppable Force is down, you can kite and stack Marks; if it is up, avoid standing where a single ult puts you in Ground Slam and melee range.

Later Tank Malphite becomes very hard for Kennen to kill in a side lane, while both champions want teamfights. Kennen should avoid matching his engage head-on and instead flank after Malphite ult is used or hit a different angle so one Unstoppable Force cannot stop the whole storm.

    • Always remove Granite Shield before judging your burst damage.
    • Boots of Swiftness help against repeated Seismic Shard chase patterns.
    • Do not group tightly with allies when both ultimates are ready; Malphite can start before you do.
    • Ground Slam's attack-speed reduction matters less to Kennen than the fact that Malphite has reached melee.

  • Malzahar

    MalzaharUnfavoured

Malzahar matches Kennen's range and wins the clean duel if Nether Grasp lands after he has Malefic Visions and Null Zone running.

Watch for Nether Grasp suppresses Kennen through Lightning Rush and holds him in Null Zone long enough to lose the trade.

    How to beat

Stay just outside 550 unless Malzahar has spent Malefic Visions on the wave, then tag him with Q and W before backing off. Do not start Slicing Maelstrom while Nether Grasp is available unless you can stun him first with three Marks or have Quicksilver Sash ready.

Later Malzahar is safer in the side lane because his suppression punishes any all-in, but Kennen has the better teamfight if he can flank without being the Nether Grasp target. In fights, force Malzahar to ult someone else or buy QSS before diving the back line.

    • Do not Lightning Rush straight at him while Call of the Void is available; the silence can break your engage timing.
    • Voidlings make Q harder to thread, so trade after they expire or from an angle.
    • If he ults first, Slicing Maelstrom will not save you unless it was already ticking.

  • Master Yi

    Master YiEven

Kennen can kite and stun Master Yi before he reaches sustained attacks, but Alpha Strike and Highlander punish missed marks or a wasted Lightning Rush.

Watch for Alpha Strike dodges Thundering Shuriken or a Slicing Maelstrom tick and places Yi on top of Kennen.

    How to beat

Hold 550 range and make Yi spend Alpha Strike before committing Q or R. When he appears, use W if he is marked, Lightning Rush through him for the next mark, then stun and walk away until Highlander is nearly done.

Later Yi becomes more dangerous in side lane if he has enough damage to survive the first stun with Meditate or lifesteal, while Kennen remains stronger in grouped fights. Save peel marks for Yi instead of spending every cooldown on the enemy back line.

    • Do not throw Q into Alpha Strike timing; wait for him to reappear.
    • Lightning Rush should create distance after his Q, not start the trade for free.
    • If he channels Meditate during your burst, stop chasing and reset your marks.

  • Miss Fortune

    Miss FortuneEven

Kennen has the stronger all-in and interrupt pressure, while Miss Fortune wins short ranged trades if Double Up and Make It Rain keep him from entering cleanly.

Watch for Bullet Time forces Kennen to either Lightning Rush out or commit Slicing Maelstrom immediately.

    How to beat

Stand away from low-health minions so Double Up cannot bounce onto you, then look for Q poke when Strut is broken. Once Make It Rain is down, Lightning Rush into R range and use your stun to stop Bullet Time or prevent her from repositioning.

Later Miss Fortune does more front-to-back damage if protected, but Kennen has the better engage and can cancel her channel with a stun. In side lane, whoever lands the first major spell usually wins, so avoid fighting through a full Bullet Time cone.

    • Break Strut with Q or W before trying to chase.
    • Do not line up behind your caster minions; Double Up is her best cheap trade.
    • Save a mark or W activation to interrupt Bullet Time quickly.

  • Morgana

    MorganaEven

Black Shield denies Kennen's stun window, but Morgana struggles to kill him unless Dark Binding lands before he can disengage.

Watch for Black Shield absorbs the Mark of the Storm stun and lets Morgana ignore Kennen's all-in timing.

    How to beat

Trade at max Q range and do not spend Lightning Rush into a fresh Black Shield. Bait the shield with a single mark, back out of Tormented Soil, then re-enter when it falls and stack marks quickly with E, W, and R.

Later Morgana is harder to pick and can blunt Kennen's engage with Black Shield, but Kennen still threatens multi-man Slicing Maelstrom if he reaches unshielded carries. In side lane, the duel is slow unless one player lands binding or wastes shield.

    • Do not ult only Morgana while Black Shield is active; it removes your main payoff.
    • Sidestep Dark Binding before using Lightning Rush aggressively.
    • If Soul Shackles starts, either stun her fast or leave before the second hit.

  • Nasus

    NasusFavoured

Kennen's range, stuns, and Lightning Rush let him deny Nasus contact unless Wither catches him with no escape.

Watch for Wither removes Kennen's spacing and gives Nasus time to walk into Siphoning Strike and Fury of the Sands range.

    How to beat

Keep the fight at auto and Q range, punish every Siphoning Strike attempt, and hold Lightning Rush for Wither rather than using it for damage first. If Nasus ults, stun him and disengage until Fury of the Sands is over, then resume poking.

Later A stacked Nasus eventually wins extended side-lane fights if he reaches Kennen, but Kennen remains far more valuable in grouped engages. Do not try to drain-tank his ultimate; kite him or force fights around his team instead.

    • Harass him when he walks up for Siphoning Strike, not randomly into his lifesteal windows.
    • Lightning Rush after Wither starts so the speed burst covers the worst part of the slow.
    • Do not stand in Spirit Fire while trading autos; it makes his return damage matter.

  • Nidalee

    NidaleeEven

The duel turns on whether Kennen dodges Javelin Toss and stops Nidalee's cougar follow-up with marks before she resets with Primal Surge.

Watch for Javelin Toss from long range takes enough health that Nidalee can cougar-form all-in before Kennen's stun wins.

    How to beat

Fight behind minions and change angles constantly so spear cannot start the duel for her. If she misses Javelin Toss, close to mid range, mark her with Q or E, and force a stun before Primal Surge makes the trade even again.

Later Nidalee is better at poke and disengaged side pressure, while Kennen is better in committed 5v5s. Do not chase through trapped brush; force grouped fights where she cannot rely on spears alone.

    • Bushwhack lowers your resistances, so back off if you trigger one before trading.
    • Her 525 range is slightly shorter than yours; use that edge before cougar form is available.
    • If she heals after your first spell, wait for cooldowns instead of feeding a cougar all-in.

  • Nunu & Willump

    Nunu & WillumpFavoured

Nunu can slow and sustain, but he lacks the damage and reliable lockout to beat Kennen alone if Absolute Zero is respected.

Watch for Absolute Zero punishes Kennen for staying in melee range after Lightning Rush or Slicing Maelstrom.

    How to beat

Poke from 550 and do not chase him through repeated Ice Blasts unless you have a stun ready. When he channels Absolute Zero, either Lightning Rush out immediately or stun him before the channel completes.

Later Nunu is not a side-lane duelist; he matters by enabling carries and zoning fights. Kennen should ignore long chases on him and save Slicing Maelstrom for the Blood Boil target or clustered team.

    • Do not spend all three mark tools before Absolute Zero; you need a cancel.
    • Consume only matters around minion waves or jungle camps, so fight away from easy heals.
    • Ice Blast is annoying, but it is not a kill threat unless it traps you inside his ultimate.

  • Olaf

    OlafUnfavoured

Olaf's slows, true damage, lifesteal, and Ragnarok let him run through Kennen's stun-based duel plan once he gets close.

Watch for Ragnarok makes Olaf immune to Mark of the Storm stuns during his chase window.

    How to beat

Stay outside Undertow lines and punish him only after he misses or walks away from the axe pickup. Never commit Slicing Maelstrom into Ragnarok; kite until it ends, then stun and burst if he is already low.

Later Olaf wins most side-lane all-ins because he ignores the stun and forces repeated Reckless Swing trades. Kennen's job late is to fight Olaf's back line or peel after Ragnarok expires, not duel him in a long lane.

    • Move sideways from Undertow, not straight back along the axe path.
    • If he catches his axe, the chase continues; respect the second slow more than the first.
    • Do not rely on Rylai's-style slows during Ragnarok; only distance matters.

  • Pantheon

    PantheonUnfavoured

Pantheon wins early and mid duels by forcing targeted stun and spear trades before Kennen can safely build three marks.

Watch for Aegis of Zeonia puts Pantheon in melee range, stuns Kennen, and guarantees Heartseeker Strike damage.

    How to beat

Keep maximum range, poke with Q, and avoid trading autos into Aegis Protection unless you are only removing the block. If Pantheon uses Aegis of Zeonia and Heartseeker Strike without killing you, Lightning Rush out, then re-enter with marks while his stun is down.

Later Pantheon falls off harder in full teamfights, where Kennen's AoE stun has more value, but he can still kill Kennen in a side lane if he starts the fight. Track Grand Skyfall and avoid being isolated after he lands behind you.

    • His passive can block your empowered W auto, so clear Aegis Protection before planning a mark chain.
    • Do not stand in Heartseeker Strike cone after the stun ends; sidestep before casting back.
    • Armor changes the lane more than damage does because his burst is front-loaded physical.

  • Rammus

    RammusFavoured

Rammus can force contact with taunt, but Kennen's magic damage, range, and mobility make the duel favorable if Defensive Ball Curl is not attacked into blindly.

Watch for Puncturing Taunt locks Kennen into attacking Rammus during Defensive Ball Curl and Tremors.

    How to beat

Keep minions between you and Powerball and poke him before he can start the taunt trade. If he curls, stop autoing and use the window to reposition; commit only after taunt or Powerball is down.

Later Rammus is a better pick and engage tank, but Kennen brings much more damage and back-line threat in teamfights. In side lane, Kennen can kite him unless he is caught near terrain or a long lane with no Lightning Rush.

    • Do not feed Defensive Ball Curl with free autos while taunted or just after it ends.
    • Lightning Rush through him after Powerball connects to avoid staying inside Tremors.
    • His armor stacking is less punishing for your spells than for attack-based duelists.

  • Ryze

    RyzeUnfavoured

Ryze's targeted Rune Prison and rapid spell cycling beat Kennen in a direct range-matched duel unless Kennen lands the first stun cleanly.

Watch for Rune Prison roots Kennen in Ryze's spell range and starts a full Overload and Spell Flux rotation.

    How to beat

Play just outside 550 and look for Q poke without letting Ryze answer with Rune Prison. Commit only when he has used Rune Prison or Spell Flux on the wave, then chain marks fast and leave before Desperate Power turns the trade into sustained spell vamp.

Later Ryze scales into the stronger side-lane duelist, while Kennen keeps the stronger multi-target engage. Avoid isolated fights with Desperate Power available; in teamfights, flank from fog so Ryze has to choose between rooting you and fighting your front line.

    • Do not Lightning Rush into his face while Rune Prison is ready; it is targeted and beats the dash-in.
    • Minion waves make Spell Flux bounces nastier, so trade away from your caster line.
    • If Desperate Power is active, disengage first and fight after the buff ends.

  • Shaco

    ShacoEven

Kennen wins if he survives Shaco's opener and reveals the real fight with AoE marks, but loses if Deceive and Jack In The Box fear control the first seconds.

Watch for Deceive gives Shaco the first hit from behind and lets him choose when Kennen has no mark setup.

    How to beat

Do not walk into unwarded boxes or narrow jungle paths; keep the duel in open lane where Q and Slicing Maelstrom can hit both Shaco and his clone. After Deceive appears, Lightning Rush away from his backstab angle, mark him, and save W until you know which target is real or both are marked.

Later Shaco prefers picks and split pressure, while Kennen is far stronger in grouped fights if he is not chunked before engaging. In side lane, respect fog and boxes more than the visible champion.

    • Jack In The Box can interrupt your engage with fear; sweep paths with minions when possible.
    • Slicing Maelstrom hitting both Shaco and Hallucinate helps identify and punish the real one.
    • Turn immediately after Deceive so he cannot keep Backstab uptime for free.

  • Shen

    ShenFavoured

Shen is durable and can taunt, but Kennen outranges him and can disengage before Shen's low-damage trades become threatening.

Watch for Shadow Dash taunts Kennen long enough for Shen to force Vorpal Blade and Ki Strike trades.

    How to beat

Hold 550 range and punish every missed Shadow Dash with Q, W, and autos. Keep Lightning Rush for the taunt path rather than farming damage with it, then all-in only after Feint is down or already broken.

Later Shen is more useful in side lane because Stand United lets him join fights without giving up the map, but Kennen is the scarier 5v5 initiator. Push him carefully, keep vision for his team, and be ready to answer his teleport with a flank engage.

    • Stand off-angle from your minion wave so Shadow Dash cannot tag you while he farms.
    • Do not dump burst into Feint if you can wait it out.
    • Interrupting Stand United with a stun is possible if you already have marks ready.

  • Singed

    SingedEven

Kennen can harass and stun Singed, but a single Mega Adhesive into Fling can turn the fight into a poison chase he does not want.

Watch for Fling flips Kennen behind Singed into Poison Trail and breaks his ideal spacing.

    How to beat

Stay at max range and never chase directly through Poison Trail just to keep damage ticking. Bait Mega Adhesive or Fling movement first, then use Lightning Rush laterally to avoid the flip and punish him once Insanity Potion is not running.

Later Singed becomes more annoying in side lanes because he can ignore poke, proxy waves, and force long chases, while Kennen is better at decisive teamfight lockdown. Let him push into controlled vision and punish his team instead of following him forever.

    • If Mega Adhesive lands under you, save Lightning Rush until you can actually leave the zone.
    • Do not R just because Singed runs at you with Insanity Potion; he wants to drag the fight out.

    SionEven

Kennen can kite Sion, but targeted Cryptic Gaze and Death's Caress make the duel dangerous if Sion reaches stun range with shield ready.

Watch for Cryptic Gaze stuns Kennen long enough for Death's Caress detonation and Enrage attacks to land.

    How to beat

Poke at max range and back up whenever Death's Caress is active instead of helping him detonate it on you. If he uses Cryptic Gaze, Lightning Rush out as soon as the stun ends, then re-engage while his shield or stun is on cooldown.

Later AD Sion can become a stronger isolated duelist with Cannibalism sustain if he gets onto Kennen, while AP-style Sion remains pick reliant. Kennen should avoid face-check stun range and look for teamfight ultimates where Sion cannot isolate him.

    • Do not spend your burst into Death's Caress unless you can break it before he reaches you.
    • Cryptic Gaze is targeted, so spacing outside its range matters more than sidestepping.
    • Use stun after Cannibalism starts to deny his lifesteal window.

Kennen outranges Sivir and wins if he plays around Spell Shield instead of donating his stun setup to it.

Watch for Spell Shield blocks the ability that would complete Mark of the Storm and can ruin Kennen's all-in timing.

    How to beat

Use autos or a low-commitment Q angle to bait Spell Shield before spending Lightning Rush or Slicing Maelstrom. Once the shield is down, abuse your range advantage, stack marks quickly, and step sideways so Boomerang Blade does not hit twice.

Later Sivir scales as a teamfight marksman and gives her team engage speed, but Kennen can still punish her short range with a flank. In side lane, Kennen wins unless he wastes key spells into Spell Shield and eats a full Boomerang Blade trade.

    • Your 550 range beats her 425 range; trade without entering free Ricochet range when possible.
    • Do not activate W into Spell Shield if it is the mark that would stun her.

Watch for Impale suppresses Kennen and drags him through Skarner's Crystal Slash damage, taking away Lightning Rush as an escape.

    How to beat

Hold just outside his engage line and tag him with Q or W passive before he can start W. If Crystalline Exoskeleton is down or broken, kite backward with autos and Electrical Surge, then use Lightning Rush to either finish the third mark or leave before Impale range.

Later Skarner is more reliable in the side lane if he can force point-blank contact, while Kennen is far better in grouped fights with Slicing Maelstrom. Keep waves pushed enough that he cannot run straight at you from fog, and save Flash or Zhonya's for the teamfight after he commits Impale.

    • Break Crystalline Exoskeleton before trading seriously; without the shield speed he struggles to reach you.
    • Do not Lightning Rush forward while Impale is ready unless you already have a stun lined up.

Sona can poke and disengage, but she is too fragile to survive Kennen's marked all-in if Crescendo is baited or missed.

Watch for Crescendo stuns Kennen long enough for Sona to stop Slicing Maelstrom or escape its center.

    How to beat

Trade from max 550 range and do not eat repeated Hymn of Valor plus Power Chord for free. Once Crescendo is down, mark her with Q or W passive, Lightning Rush into range, and ult before she can kite out with Song of Celerity.

Later Sona should not be side-laning into Kennen; she matters by protecting grouped allies. Kennen should flank around her team and either force Crescendo defensively or use Zhonya's after she spends it.

    • Count Power Chord; her damage-reduction chord can blunt your burst if you all-in into it.
    • Crescendo is the only spell that really denies your ult channel timing.
    • Her 550 range matches yours, so do not give her free Q trades while your passive auto is unready.

  • Soraka

    SorakaFavoured

Soraka can stall with healing and silence, but she lacks the burst or mobility to beat Kennen once he times his engage around Infuse.

Watch for Infuse silences Kennen, denying the ability chain needed to finish Mark of the Storm and burst.

    How to beat

Poke without committing until Infuse is used, then go in immediately while she cannot interrupt your combo. Stay out of repeated Starcall range unless you are forcing the kill, because the MR shred makes the trade last longer than it should.

Later Soraka avoids side duels and wins value by keeping carries alive in grouped fights. Kennen should threaten the backline from an angle and make her choose between silencing him early or saving cooldowns for allies.

    • Do not start Slicing Maelstrom into an unused Infuse if you need follow-up spells to stun.

  • Taric

    TaricFavoured

Taric is dangerous only if he gets into Dazzle range, while Kennen can kite his melee kit and punish his low mobility.

Watch for Dazzle stuns Kennen and gives Taric the only clean window to walk in for Shatter and Radiance.

    How to beat

Hold max range and force Taric to spend Dazzle before you use Lightning Rush aggressively. If he misses the timing or uses it defensively, kite back through minions, stack marks, and re-enter once he has no stun.

Later Taric rarely wins a side-lane chase unless Kennen walks into fog or melee range. In teamfights, his armor aura matters less against Kennen's magic damage, so look for ult angles that hit his carries instead of dumping everything into him.

    • His Shatter armor does little against your main damage, so do not be scared off by the aura alone.
    • Lightning Rush should answer Dazzle, not start the fight into it.
    • If he flashes for Dazzle, turn with Slicing Maelstrom after the stun ends rather than running in a straight line.

  • Teemo

    TeemoEven

Kennen has stronger burst and stun control, but Teemo's blind, poison, and mushrooms can ruin the spacing needed to set up that burst.

Watch for Noxious Trap controls the path Kennen needs for Lightning Rush and can turn an all-in into a poisoned chase.

    How to beat

Keep the fight in cleared space and use Q poke rather than relying on autos while Blinding Dart is ready. When Teemo's Move Quick has been broken by damage and you know the path is safe, rush in for a mark chain and ult before he can kite through mushrooms.

Later Teemo can make side lanes miserable with traps, but Kennen is much more decisive in 5v5 fights. Carry sweepers or wards for flank paths and do not enter a teamfight already chunked by mushrooms.

    • Your Q is not affected by Blinding Dart, so use it to start trades.
    • Do not chase directly through minion waves or brush where traps are likely.

Tristana's scaling range, Rocket Jump, and Buster Shot let her control distance better than Kennen unless he catches her with a clean stun chain.

Watch for Buster Shot knocks Kennen out of Slicing Maelstrom and resets the spacing after he commits.

    How to beat

Do not open with Lightning Rush unless Rocket Jump or Buster Shot is already unavailable. Poke with Q from outside her auto rhythm, save E to follow Rocket Jump, and commit only when she is marked and cannot knock you out before the stun lands.

Later Tristana becomes very hard to duel in the side lane because her range outgrows yours and she can disengage your ult. Kennen should look for flank or Flash ult angles in teamfights where Buster Shot cannot peel every target.

    • Her level-scaling range eventually makes even trades worse for you.

Watch for Undying Rage prevents the kill and lets Tryndamere keep chasing after Kennen has spent his burst.

    How to beat

Keep him at shuriken and auto range, and save Lightning Rush for after Spinning Slash rather than using it for poke. Force Undying Rage with marks and ult, then disengage until it expires before using your last damage spell.

Later Tryndamere is the stronger finished side-lane duelist if he can stick, while Kennen brings far more teamfight control. Match waves cautiously, do not fight him deep in lane without Flash, and group when his split push can be answered by waveclear instead of a duel.

    • Never spend Lightning Rush before Spinning Slash unless you are already stunning him.
    • Mocking Shout only works when you turn away, so expect the slow during retreats.
    • Your stun is best used during Undying Rage to waste its duration, not before it.

  • Twisted Fate

    Twisted FateFavoured

Twisted Fate can poke and set up picks, but in a straight duel he is fragile and cannot survive Kennen's engage if Gold Card is baited.

Watch for Pick A Card's Gold Card stuns Kennen and interrupts the timing of his mark chain or ultimate engage.

    How to beat

Respect his locked Gold Card and back up until he throws it or lets the cycle pass. Once Pick A Card is down, close with Lightning Rush, apply the third mark quickly, and stay inside Slicing Maelstrom while he has no reliable escape.

Later Twisted Fate avoids fair side duels by using Gate and Destiny to create number advantages elsewhere. Kennen should shove, ping his disappearance, and punish grouped fights where TF has to stand still long enough to throw cards.

    • Do not Lightning Rush into a visible Gold Card.
    • Wild Cards is dodgeable; winning the lane starts with not being softened before the all-in.
    • Destiny's slow and reveal matter most when you are trying to flank, so wait it out if possible.

  • Twitch

    TwitchEven

Kennen wins if he survives the opener and reaches stun range, but Twitch can delete him from Ambush with stacked Deadly Venom and Expunge.

Watch for Ambush gives Twitch the first shot and attack-speed window to stack Deadly Venom before Kennen can mark him.

    How to beat

Do not stand in lane or river without vision when Twitch is missing; the duel is much worse if he starts from stealth. If he appears at range, immediately tag him with Q or E, use the stun to stop Spray and Pray uptime, and avoid extending the chase after Expunge stacks are high.

Later Twitch's finished-teamfight damage is enormous if he opens unseen, while Kennen is better at punishing grouped immobile targets. Buy vision for flank paths and be ready to Flash ult onto him once he reveals for Spray and Pray.

    • A warded approach changes the matchup more than a small damage item does.
    • Venom Cask's slow can keep you inside Spray and Pray lines, so E before you are heavily stacked.
    • If Twitch uses Ambush defensively, stop chasing unless you can reveal or predict the exit.

  • Vayne

    VayneUnfavoured

Vayne's mobility, Condemn, and Silver Bolts make the close-range duel difficult once Kennen fails to land the first stun.

Watch for Condemn knocks Kennen out of his engage and can stun him against terrain, ending Slicing Maelstrom pressure.

    How to beat

Fight away from walls and do not use Lightning Rush straight into Condemn unless she is already marked twice. Poke with Q, punish Tumble's cooldown, and commit only when your stun will land before Final Hour stealth lets her reposition.

Later Vayne is the superior finished side-lane duelist, especially around walls and long lanes. Kennen should avoid isolated chases and instead force teamfights where his AoE stun can hit Vayne before she cleans up.

    • Wall spacing is the matchup; a single Condemn stun usually loses the duel.
    • Final Hour Tumble breaks your targeting rhythm, so rely on area damage and pre-existing marks.
    • Her 550 range matches yours, but Tumble lets her decide short trades unless you land Q first.

  • Veigar

    VeigarEven

Kennen can kill Veigar quickly if he dodges the cage, but Event Horizon into Primordial Burst punishes Kennen's AP build extremely hard.

Watch for Event Horizon stuns Kennen on the edge and sets up Dark Matter plus Primordial Burst before he can finish his engage.

    How to beat

Stand close enough to threaten Q but not so close that he can cage your only escape path. Bait Event Horizon with movement or a partial Lightning Rush, then re-engage while it is down and kill before his cooldowns cycle back.

Later Veigar's burst becomes more dangerous as Kennen's AP rises, but Kennen is still better at multi-target teamfight initiation. Flank from angles that do not force you through Event Horizon's edge, and consider defensive magic resist if he is the one deleting you.

    • Do not touch the cage edge during Lightning Rush; speed does not matter if you stun yourself.
    • Primordial Burst scales with your AP, so pure damage builds make his kill window sharper.
    • If Event Horizon misses, Veigar has no real answer to Slicing Maelstrom.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsAbyssal Scepter
  • Warwick

    WarwickEven

Kennen can kite Warwick before level 6, but Infinite Duress and Hungering Strike healing make extended close fights dangerous.

Watch for Infinite Duress suppresses Kennen in place and gives Warwick guaranteed damage plus time to heal through the trade.

    How to beat

Keep Warwick outside Q range and do not let him heal repeatedly with Hungering Strike for free. Save Lightning Rush for after he uses Infinite Duress or to create distance before he reaches ult range; if his ult is down, stun and burst before his sustain matters.

Later Warwick is harder to push out of a side lane because of sustain and point-click suppression, while Kennen is more valuable in full teamfights. Track his ult and avoid being the isolated target; in grouped fights, wait for Warwick to commit before ulting the backline.

    • His sustain rewards long trades, so take short mark trades and reset.
    • Blood Scent makes low-health escapes unreliable; leave earlier than usual.
    • Quicksilver Sash changes the duel by denying his guaranteed suppression window.

  • Wukong

    WukongEven

Kennen can punish Wukong before he reaches melee range, but Nimbus Strike into Cyclone can lock Kennen down if Decoy dodges the key spell.

Watch for Cyclone knocks Kennen up and keeps Wukong on top of him during the all-in.

    How to beat

Harass from max range and do not throw your deciding Q into Decoy. When Wukong uses Nimbus Strike, mark him immediately and kite sideways; if Cyclone is down or he has already used Decoy, commit with Slicing Maelstrom and force the stun.

Later Wukong can threaten Kennen in side lanes with brush and Decoy tricks, while both champions are strong teamfight divers. Kennen should avoid matching his first engage head-on and instead ult the clustered fight after Cyclone has drawn attention or cooldowns.

    • Hold Q for after Decoy if the fight is about to turn all-in.
    • Nimbus Strike gives him the gap close, so Lightning Rush should create space after it lands.
    • Cyclone can interrupt your clean positioning even if your ult is running.
    BuyNinja TabiSeeker's ArmguardZhonya's Hourglass
  • Zilean

    ZileanEven

Zilean outranges and kites Kennen with bombs and Time Warp, but Kennen can win if he forces Chronoshift before using his last burst.

Watch for Chronoshift denies Kennen's kill timing and can make him waste Slicing Maelstrom on a target that revives.

    How to beat

Respect his 600 range and avoid eating free Time Bombs while walking up for autos. Force Time Warp or Chronoshift with a partial engage, then back off until the revive window ends and re-enter with Lightning Rush or Flash while his cooldowns are cycling.

Later Zilean is not looking for honest side duels; he wins by speeding carries and undoing picks in teamfights. Kennen should pressure flanks but avoid spending everything into the Chronoshift target unless the revive is the fight's objective.

    • His range is longer than yours, so dodge first and trade second.
    • Do not finish your full combo into an active Chronoshift unless your team can kill him again.
    • Time Warp used as a speed boost means he has no slow for your re-engage.
