Malzahar

The Prophet of the Void

How this differs from the live game

  • Null Zone (W) is an AoE area for a short time
  • Summon Voidling (P) creates a voidling after a number of casts
  • Nether Grasp (R) does not have the null zone around the target

Magic penetration marks are the best damage marks because Call of the Void, Malefic Visions, Null Zone, and Nether Grasp all deal magic damage. Armor seals cover auto-attack harass and minions, MR glyphs are the default mid-lane defense, and AP quints improve his high AP ratios on Q, E, and R.

Summon Voidling

Call of the VoidQ
Null ZoneW
Malefic VisionsE
Nether GraspR
  • Call of the Void (Q) takes points at levels 2, 8, 10, 12, 13.
  • Null Zone (W) takes points at levels 4, 14, 15, 17, 18.
  • Malefic Visions (E) takes points at levels 1, 3, 5, 7, 9.
  • Nether Grasp (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.

Max E first for lane control, mana returns, and reliable damage, then Q for burst and silence; take W at level 4 so Nether Grasp has percent-health zone damage available for level 6 all-ins.

Alternative — Max Q before E only when you cannot safely keep Malefic Visions bouncing and need longer-range poke and silence priority.

Not the author's. The AP/magic penetration runes, Haunting Guise into Liandry's Torment, Sorcerer's Shoes, Rabadon's Deathcap, and Void Staff point to a 21 Offense mage page. The 9 Utility points support Flash uptime and mana sustain, matching the mana regen seals and early Chalice of Harmony. Inferred from the build and text they did publish.

Matchup against

62 champions, one-on-one
  • Ahri

    AhriEven

Ahri can dodge Malzahar's setup with Spirit Rush, but if Charm or a dash charge is down she is fragile enough to die inside Null Zone plus Nether Grasp.

Watch for Charm: if it lands before Malzahar channels, Ahri gets her full rotation and can stop the duel before suppression matters.

    How to beat

Hold max E range and keep minions between you and Charm while using Malefic Visions to make her spend mana. Do not ult while Spirit Rush has easy escape angles unless she has already dashed forward or missed Charm. Commit after she uses Charm or a dash charge aggressively, dropping Null Zone before Nether Grasp.

Later Ahri has better pick mobility, but Malzahar's point-and-click suppression is stronger when she dives into a teamfight. In side lane, respect her ability to reset spacing with Spirit Rush; in fights, save Nether Grasp for her final dash or for whoever follows her engage.

    • Stand behind minions so Charm cannot start the trade.
    • Do not chase through all three Spirit Rush dashes; make her come back into E/R range.
    • If Ahri ults forward for damage, that is usually your best suppression window.
    • Voidlings can force Fox-Fire hits away from you when you back off.
    BuyBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Akali

    AkaliFavoured

Malzahar punishes Akali's melee commit because Shadow Dance puts her directly into Null Zone and Nether Grasp range.

Watch for Twilight Shroud: it denies target selection and can waste the moment you want to ult her.

    How to beat

Keep the wave slightly on your side and do not stand close enough for free Mark of the Assassin procs. When she uses Shadow Dance in, put Null Zone under yourself and wait until she is visible before Nether Grasp. If she drops Twilight Shroud first, kite out of it rather than guessing with targeted spells.

Later Akali is more dangerous in chaotic skirmishes, but she still hates being the first diver into Malzahar. In side lane, Malzahar wins if he keeps vision and does not face-check shroud angles; in teamfights, suppress her after she commits to a carry.

    • Save Nether Grasp for after Shadow Dance, not before it.
    • Null Zone on top of yourself makes her melee follow-up costly.
    • Do not waste E into Twilight Shroud if she can immediately drop vision.
    • A Voidling can keep damaging her when she reappears from shroud.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassRylai's Crystal Scepter
  • Alistar

    AlistarFavoured

Alistar cannot kill Malzahar quickly in a clean duel, but Unbreakable Will can cleanse suppression and stall out the burst.

Watch for Unbreakable Will: it removes Nether Grasp and heavily reduces the damage window Malzahar depends on.

    How to beat

Stay outside Headbutt plus Pulverize range and let Malefic Visions wear him down before committing. Bait Unbreakable Will with E, Q, and Voidling pressure, then wait it out instead of ulting into it. Once it is gone, Null Zone plus Nether Grasp is enough to finish or force him away.

Later Alistar matters much more as a teamfight disruptor than as a duelist. Malzahar should not spend Nether Grasp into Unbreakable Will unless it prevents a lethal engage; usually he controls Alistar's backline instead.

    • Never ult Alistar while Unbreakable Will is available unless you only need to interrupt him briefly.
    • Keep enough distance that Headbutt cannot knock you into his team or turret.
    • Silence him with Call of the Void before he reaches combo range.
    • His sustain is slow, so repeated E bounces matter more than one burst attempt.
  • Amumu

    AmumuEven

Malzahar has the damage to burn Amumu down, but Bandage Toss into Curse of the Sad Mummy can interrupt the channel and keep him inside Despair.

Watch for Bandage Toss: it starts Amumu's melee lockdown and can force Malzahar to fight in Despair range.

    How to beat

Hold behind minions and punish Amumu when Bandage Toss is down. If he lands Q, move out after the stun before using Nether Grasp unless you know Curse of the Sad Mummy is unavailable. Your clean kill pattern is E poke, dodge Bandage Toss, then Null Zone plus Nether Grasp before he can re-enter.

Later Amumu becomes more valuable in grouped fights because Curse of the Sad Mummy can decide the whole fight. Malzahar wins isolated lanes with spacing, but in teamfights he should stand spread and suppress Amumu only if stopping his engage is worth more than locking a carry.

    • Minions are your best protection against Bandage Toss.
    • Do not channel Nether Grasp while Amumu still has ultimate in melee range.
    • Null Zone is excellent against his health stack, but only if he is locked in it.
    • Call of the Void can stop him from casting right as he walks up.
    BuyBanshee's VeilSpirit Visage
  • Anivia

    AniviaUnfavoured

Anivia outranges and zones Malzahar, and Rebirth makes his all-in unreliable unless he can kill the egg too.

Watch for Rebirth: it turns Malzahar's kill combo into only the first half of the job.

    How to beat

Play outside Flash Frost lines and avoid getting trapped between Crystallize and Glacial Storm. Poke with Malefic Visions when her stun is down, but do not commit Nether Grasp unless you can also damage the egg afterward. If she uses wall poorly, step around it first, then look for Q silence into E/R.

Later Anivia is stronger at controlling grouped fights and defending terrain, while Malzahar is better at deleting one exposed target. In side lane, he can threaten her only when Rebirth is down; in teamfights, flank angles are poor, so play front-to-back and suppress whoever leaves Anivia's zone.

    • Track Rebirth before spending Flash or Nether Grasp.
    • Do not stand near walls where Crystallize can force you into Flash Frost.
    • Silencing Anivia can stop Glacial Storm upkeep and open a short trade window.
    • Voidlings help kill egg only if the wave is not pulling them away.
    BuyBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Annie

    AnnieUnfavoured

Annie's longer attack range and instant Pyromania stun let her burst Malzahar before he can safely channel Nether Grasp.

Watch for Pyromania stun: it makes Tibbers or Disintegrate interrupt your setup and gives Annie the first full combo.

    How to beat

Watch her stun count and back off when Pyromania is ready. Harass with E only when she has spent stun on the wave or is forced to last-hit, and never walk into Tibbers range just to ult. Your best commit is after she uses stun or misses the Tibbers engage, then silence and suppress before her next rotation.

Later Annie remains scarier in short-range teamfight engages, but Malzahar can punish her after Flash-Tibbers is spent. In side lane, she wins if she gets first stun; in fights, keep enough distance that she must Flash before reaching you.

    • Count Pyromania stacks constantly; four stacks changes the lane entirely.
    • Do not channel Nether Grasp into a ready stun.
    • Her 625 range lets her tag you before you can E, so use wave bounces instead of walking up dry.
    • After Tibbers is down, she is much easier to suppress.
    BuyBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Ashe

    AsheFavoured

Ashe can kite with slows and arrow, but she is immobile enough that Malzahar wins if he reaches ultimate range without being stunned first.

Watch for Enchanted Crystal Arrow: it stops Malzahar's approach or interrupts his kill attempt long enough for Ashe to kite out.

    How to beat

Avoid long open lanes where Frost Shot can run you down before you reach 550 range. Let E push her off the wave, then commit when Volley or Arrow is down, placing Null Zone before Nether Grasp. If Arrow is available, move laterally before the all-in so she cannot fire it straight through your channel setup.

Later Ashe is stronger in full teamfights if she starts with a long-range arrow, but Malzahar is a major threat to her if she lacks peel. In side lane, Ashe should not be able to stand within Nether Grasp range alone.

    • Do not chase through Frost Shot unless your ultimate is ready.
    • Side-step before committing so Enchanted Crystal Arrow is harder to pre-fire.
    • Suppress her after Volley if she used it to check your approach.
    • Voidlings make her spend attacks while Malefic Visions ticks.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassNinja Tabi
  • Blitzcrank

    BlitzcrankFavoured

Blitzcrank only wins if Rocket Grab starts the fight; otherwise Malzahar can kite and punish his short range.

Watch for Rocket Grab: it removes Malzahar's spacing and puts him into Power Fist plus Static Field range.

    How to beat

Keep minions between you and Blitzcrank and punish every missed Rocket Grab with E and Q. Do not ult while his knockup or silence is available in melee unless he is already controlled or too low to answer. If he Overdrives straight at you without hook, silence him and kite back before committing.

Later Blitzcrank is a pick champion, not a true side-lane threat. Malzahar should play behind minions and teammates, then use Nether Grasp on the hooked target's follow-up or on Blitzcrank after his interrupts are spent.

    • A minion wave completely changes the matchup because Rocket Grab is his real threat.
    • Do not stand close enough for Power Fist after a missed hook.
    • Static Field can interrupt your channel, so respect it when he is in melee.
    • Malefic Visions punishes him hard when he walks up to threaten hook.
    BuyBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Brand

    BrandEven

Brand has stronger ranged burst if he lands Sear stun, but Malzahar's suppression wins when Brand's stun setup is missed or on cooldown.

Watch for Sear: when Brand has Blaze on you, it stuns and stops Malzahar from casting or channeling first.

    How to beat

Do not let Conflagration or Pillar of Flame tag you for free before Sear is available. Fight at the edge of E range and move unpredictably after any Blaze application. Commit only after Sear misses or Brand spends it for poke, then Null Zone and Nether Grasp before his next rotation.

Later Brand deals more area damage in grouped fights, while Malzahar offers more reliable single-target lockdown. In side lane the duel remains skill-based; in teamfights, avoid clumping so Pyroclasm cannot bounce while you channel.

    • If Blaze is on you, treat Sear as the matchup's stun button.
    • Do not ult before Sear is used unless Call of the Void has silenced him.
    • Step away from minions and allies before Pyroclasm can bounce.
    • Brand is vulnerable during Pillar of Flame's delay if Sear is down.
    BuyBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Cho'Gath

    Cho'GathUnfavoured

Cho'Gath's silence and knockup both stop Malzahar's channel, and Feast gives him a lethal finish if he gets into melee.

Watch for Feral Scream: it silences Malzahar before Nether Grasp and prevents the spell chain that wins the duel.

    How to beat

Stay outside Feral Scream cone and never walk straight through Rupture zones to apply E. Use Malefic Visions to chip him, then wait for either Rupture or Feral Scream to be down before committing. If he reaches melee with Feast ready, disengage rather than trying to finish through his burst.

Later Cho'Gath becomes very hard to remove in side lane, but Malzahar's percent damage still matters if Cho is locked down by allies. In teamfights, do not ult him first unless his silence is unavailable and your team needs the tank burned.

    • Feral Scream can ruin your combo even if Nether Grasp is ready.
    • Move sideways after he postures for Rupture; walking back is often too slow.
    • Null Zone is strong against his health, but only after his interrupts are spent.
    • Track Feast range when you are below half health.
    BuyBanshee's VeilLiandry's Torment
  • Corki

    CorkiEven

Corki can poke and escape with Valkyrie, but if Valkyrie is down he is fragile enough for Malzahar's full combo.

Watch for Valkyrie: it breaks the all-in spacing and can carry Corki out before Malzahar gets a clean suppression angle.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions to reduce Missile Barrage poke and do not take repeated Phosphorus Bomb trades for free. Force Valkyrie with E pressure or a silence threat, then wait out the trail before moving forward. Once Valkyrie is down, Null Zone into Nether Grasp wins the stationary duel.

Later Corki scales into stronger sustained damage and siege poke, while Malzahar keeps the better pick tool. In side lane, Malzahar wins only when Valkyrie is unavailable; in teamfights, suppress Corki after his escape or when he steps forward to Gatling Gun.

    • Do not chase through Valkyrie's fire trail to keep E ticking.
    • Call of the Void can punish Corki when he stops to Gatling Gun.
    • Valkyrie cooldown is the main green light for Nether Grasp.
    • Avoid lining up with low minions that let Missile Barrage splash you repeatedly.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassBanshee's Veil
  • Dr. Mundo

    Dr. MundoEven

Malzahar's percent damage and suppression can beat Dr. Mundo, but Sadism can outlast the burst if Grievous Wounds is missing or mistimed.

Watch for Sadism: it buys Mundo enough health and time to survive Malzahar's channel and keep chasing with cleavers.

    How to beat

Keep distance from Infected Cleaver angles and chip him before committing. Hold your kill combo until Sadism is down, or apply Grievous Wounds as he drops low before the ultimate heal takes over. Use Null Zone under him only when he is forced to walk through you or is locked by Nether Grasp.

Later Mundo becomes much harder to kill in side lane once finished, but Malzahar remains useful because suppression stops his backline access. In teamfights, bring anti-heal and use Nether Grasp when Mundo overextends, not when he can simply soak everything and walk away.

    • Morellonomicon matters most when Sadism is about to carry the fight.
    • Dodge cleavers before trading; one slow can turn into a long chase.
    • Null Zone is one of your best tools into his health stacking.
    • Do not waste full combo while Sadism is fresh unless teammates can finish him.
    BuyMorellonomiconLiandry's TormentRylai's Crystal Scepter
  • Evelynn

    EvelynnFavoured

Evelynn threatens the first hit from stealth, but once revealed she has to stay close enough for Malzahar's silence, Null Zone, and Nether Grasp.

Watch for Shadow Walk flank: it lets Evelynn start the duel from an angle where Malzahar has not set spacing or Voidling pressure.

    How to beat

Respect fog and keep the wave warded so she cannot appear directly behind you. If she opens with Ravage, drop Null Zone at your feet and suppress her before she can use the slow to stay on you. When she backs off into stealth, do not chase blind; reset and make her re-enter your range.

Later Evelynn is stronger at finding isolated targets, while Malzahar is better at punishing her committed dive. In teamfights, save Nether Grasp for her reveal or for the carry she enables, and keep detection around flanks.

    • Fight where you have ward coverage; the matchup changes completely if she opens unseen.
    • Null Zone under yourself punishes Ravage commits.
    • Do not chase after she drops combat to re-enter camouflage.
    • Call of the Void can stop her follow-up if you cast it across her path.
    BuySightstoneTwin ShadowsZhonya's Hourglass
  • Ezreal

    EzrealEven

Ezreal can avoid Malzahar's all-in with Arcane Shift and poke from safety, but he dies quickly if Shift is forced before Nether Grasp.

Watch for Arcane Shift: it denies Malzahar's commit range and resets the duel before Null Zone can matter.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions to block Mystic Shot and use E bounces to make him choose between farming and shifting defensively. Do not flash-ult unless Arcane Shift is down or he is locked into its ending position. Once he shifts forward or sideways for damage, close immediately and combo before cooldown resets matter.

Later Ezreal has safer poke and mobility in grouped fights, while Malzahar gives his team a guaranteed answer when Ezreal mispositions. In side lane, Ezreal can stall indefinitely if Shift is up; in fights, suppress him only after his blink or when he is pinned by terrain.

    • Minions denying Mystic Shot also deny his cooldown refunds.
    • Arcane Shift used aggressively is your best kill window.
    • Do not stand low behind the wave where Trueshot Barrage can finish you during recalls or resets.
    • Silence him after Shift so he cannot instantly answer with another spell chain.
    BuyBanshee's VeilTwin Shadows
  • Fiddlesticks

    FiddlesticksUnfavoured

Fiddlesticks can interrupt Malzahar with fear or silence and can heal through a bad trade with Drain if Malzahar does not stop it.

Watch for Terrify: it breaks Malzahar's timing and can cancel the duel plan before Nether Grasp is cast.

    How to beat

Stay outside Terrify range until you are ready to trade, and use Call of the Void to interrupt Drain rather than wasting it early. Do not channel Nether Grasp while Dark Wind is likely to bounce onto you and silence the setup. Commit when Terrify or Dark Wind is down, placing Null Zone first so he cannot simply Drain through the damage.

Later Fiddlesticks is far more dangerous from fog with Crowstorm than in honest lanes. Malzahar can win a prepared duel, but in teamfights he must ward flanks and save silence or suppression to stop Crowstorm's arrival or Drain follow-up.

    • Call of the Void should be held for Drain or Crowstorm channels when possible.
    • Avoid trading inside minion waves that give Dark Wind bounce value.
    • Terrify range is shorter than your poke pattern, so do not step in casually.
    • If he starts Crowstorm in vision, Nether Grasp can shut down the follow-up.

  • Gangplank

    GangplankUnfavoured

Gangplank's Remove Scurvy cleanses Nether Grasp, letting him escape or turn the duel after Malzahar spends his best spell.

Watch for Remove Scurvy: it removes suppression and invalidates Malzahar's normal kill combo.

    How to beat

Harass with Malefic Visions and Voidling pressure while staying outside repeated Parrrley trades. Try to force Remove Scurvy with silence, poke, or low-health pressure before using Nether Grasp. If W is available, do not all-in unless you only need the brief lock to finish him instantly.

Later Gangplank scales better in side lane because he can cleanse the suppression and threaten with crit Parrrley plus Cannon Barrage. In teamfights, Malzahar should usually suppress a target without a cleanse and use Q/E to keep Gangplank from walking freely into carries.

    • Track Remove Scurvy exactly; it is the matchup's whole answer to Nether Grasp.
    • Do not spend full combo into a healthy Gangplank with W ready.
    • Cannon Barrage can make your channel position unsafe even if he is suppressed briefly.
    • Voidlings can pressure him after Parrrley, but do not let him farm them for free value.

  • Garen

    GarenFavoured

Malzahar wins if he keeps Garen out of melee because Garen has no ranged interrupt for Nether Grasp and hates being kited through Malefic Visions and Null Zone.

Watch for Decisive Strike: the speed burst and silence let Garen break the spacing Malzahar needs before casting Nether Grasp.

    How to beat

Hold just outside Decisive Strike engage range and refresh Malefic Visions often enough to stop Perseverance. If Garen spends Decisive Strike to farm or chase a Voidling, back up until the silence window ends, then commit with E, W, R before he can reach you again.

Later Malzahar still controls the side lane unless Garen is too tanky to kill in one rotation, but Garen can force towers and threaten executes if he ever closes. In teamfights, save Nether Grasp for Garen only if he reaches a carry; otherwise use silence and zone damage to make his approach miserable.

    • Malefic Visions is your best tool for denying Perseverance without walking into Judgment.
    • Do not ult while Decisive Strike is about to connect; the silence can stop the setup before it starts.
    • Null Zone under Nether Grasp matters more than chasing him through Judgment.

  • Gragas

    GragasEven

Malzahar has the stronger locked-down kill, but Gragas can disrupt the channel, poke from outside Malzahar's comfort range, and disengage with Explosive Cask.

Watch for Explosive Cask: it knocks Malzahar out of position and cancels or prevents the Nether Grasp kill window.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions against Body Slam and do not give him a straight line to start the trade. Bait Explosive Cask or force him to use Body Slam defensively, then cast E and W before Nether Grasp so he cannot simply knock you away mid-combo.

Later Finished Gragas is harder to kill alone because he can disengage and heal through short poke, so the side lane is mostly wave control unless his ultimate is down. In teamfights, Malzahar should play behind the frontline and punish Gragas after Cask is used, not start a channel into it.

    • Voidlings can eat Body Slam angles if you keep the wave between you and Gragas.
    • Do not stand on your Null Zone edge; Explosive Cask can throw you out of your own damage.
    • If Gragas uses Body Slam forward and misses, he is vulnerable to a full suppression combo.

  • Heimerdinger

    HeimerdingerEven

Malzahar can kill Heimerdinger with a clean ultimate, but Heimer controls space with turrets and makes it hard for Malzahar to choose the fight on his terms.

Watch for CH-1 Concussion Grenade: the direct stun stops Malzahar's approach or breaks the timing before Nether Grasp.

    How to beat

Do not walk through H-28G Evolution Turrets to force a duel; clear or bypass the setup first with Malefic Visions bounce pressure. When Grenade is down or misses, Heimer has no reliable answer to E, W, R at close enough range.

Later Heimerdinger is stronger around prepared objectives and turrets, while Malzahar is better at catching him away from his setup. In teamfights, avoid ulting inside turret nests unless your team can immediately follow and clear the zone.

    • Malefic Visions can turn Heimer's minion wave into pressure on his turrets and body position.
    • Fight him in lane space he has not already filled with H-28G Evolution Turrets.
    • A direct Grenade hit is the difference between a kill combo and a lost trade.

  • Janna

    JannaFavoured

In a true duel Janna lacks the damage to punish Malzahar, but in real games she mainly exists to interrupt his pick attempts and save allies.

Watch for Monsoon: the knockback cancels Malzahar's close-range kill attempt and resets the fight.

    How to beat

Against Janna alone, walk her down patiently and make her spend Howling Gale or Monsoon before committing Nether Grasp. Do not cast R while she is holding Monsoon at point-blank range unless you only need to force her disengage.

Later Malzahar wins the side lane, but Janna is far more relevant in grouped fights because her displacement and shields deny clean picks. Silence or suppress after Monsoon is used, or target someone outside her peel range.

    • Call of the Void can silence Janna before she casts Monsoon if you line it up first.
    • Her shield does not stop Null Zone percent damage from mattering over the full channel.
    • Do not chase through charged Howling Gale when your ultimate is ready; wait for the tornado to release.
  • Jarvan IV

    Jarvan IVEven

Jarvan can force melee range and trap Malzahar, but if his engage is spent or interrupted Malzahar's suppression and zone damage can kill him before he finishes the duel.

Watch for Cataclysm: it traps Malzahar in melee range and makes escaping Jarvan's follow-up difficult.

    How to beat

Respect the Demacian Standard plus Dragon Strike line and keep enough distance that Jarvan must use Cataclysm to start. If he misses the knockup or commits R without enough burst, drop Null Zone under yourself and suppress him inside the arena.

Later Jarvan becomes more of an engage threat than a pure duelist, and Malzahar should not side-lane past vision when Cataclysm is available. In teamfights, Nether Grasp can punish Jarvan after he dives, but only if his team cannot immediately interrupt the channel.

    • Do not stand directly behind your Voidling or minions if it gives Jarvan an easy Dragon Strike line.
    • Null Zone is strongest when Jarvan has already trapped both of you in Cataclysm.
    • If Jarvan uses Demacian Standard for farming, his all-in threat drops sharply.

  • Jax

    JaxUnfavoured

Jax's leap, durability, and scaling sustained damage make the duel dangerous once he survives Malzahar's first suppression combo.

Watch for Leap Strike: it erases Malzahar's spacing and lets Jax start the fight before Malzahar has softened him up.

    How to beat

Keep the wave between you and Jax's preferred Leap Strike targets, and punish him with Malefic Visions when he walks up instead of jumping. Commit only after Counter Strike is ending or he has used Leap Strike forward, because you need him locked in Null Zone for the full Nether Grasp damage.

Later Jax wins long side-lane fights if he has enough defenses to live through the first combo, so Malzahar should push waves from range and avoid isolated extended trades. In teamfights, suppress Jax when he dives a carry, but expect him to require team follow-up rather than dying alone.

    • Counter Strike reduces area damage, so do not rely on Null Zone alone while it is active.
    • A Voidling can give Jax an extra Leap Strike route; watch your summon timing near him.
    • If Jax has no Leap Strike target left behind you, your silence and DoT are much easier to land safely.

  • Karthus

    KarthusEven

Malzahar has the better single-target lockdown, while Karthus can outtrade with constant Lay Waste and still deal damage after dying.

Watch for Death Defied: even after Malzahar wins the duel, Karthus can keep casting and turn the trade into a mutual kill.

    How to beat

Dodge laterally around Lay Waste and avoid standing in Defile range before you are ready to finish. Commit when Wall of Pain is down or poorly placed, then move away immediately after Karthus dies so Death Defied does not punish the channel's ending position.

Later Karthus scales harder in full teamfights through Defile and Requiem, while Malzahar remains better at deleting one target. In side lane, Malzahar can win the pick, but he must track whether the post-death damage and Requiem will still finish him.

    • Call of the Void can interrupt Requiem if you are close enough and ready for the channel.
    • Do not stay on Null Zone after Karthus dies; Death Defied turns that spot into his best damage area.
    • Your suppression stops his movement, not his value after death.

  • Kassadin

    KassadinUnfavoured

Kassadin is built to punish magic damage and short casts, and Riftwalk lets him dodge or escape Malzahar's setup before the suppression lands.

Watch for Null Sphere: the silence interrupts Malzahar's spell sequence and can stop him from casting Nether Grasp at the critical moment.

    How to beat

Fight before Kassadin has stacked Riftwalk mobility or after he spends Riftwalk aggressively into your range. Keep enough distance that Null Sphere cannot start the trade for free, then answer with Call of the Void silence before committing E, W, R.

Later Kassadin usually wins the side lane once he has items because he can choose trades and leave before Malzahar completes damage. In teamfights, Malzahar should hold Nether Grasp for Kassadin's dive timing rather than trying to chase him through Riftwalk resets.

    • His passive directly lowers your magic burst, so chip damage before the all-in matters.
    • Do not cast Nether Grasp while silenced by Null Sphere; the whole matchup revolves around that cooldown.
    • Call of the Void across his Riftwalk landing spot can buy the moment you need.

  • Katarina

    KatarinaFavoured

Malzahar's silence and suppression are brutal against Katarina because her duel depends on uninterrupted spell chains and Death Lotus.

Watch for Death Lotus: if Malzahar has already used Call of the Void or Nether Grasp badly, Katarina can channel lethal damage at close range.

    How to beat

Keep Katarina at the edge of Shunpo range and do not waste Call of the Void on low-value poke when she can all-in afterward. When she Shunpos in, silence or suppress immediately; Nether Grasp cancels Death Lotus and pins her inside Null Zone.

Later Katarina is more dangerous in messy teamfights with resets, but she still hates being the target of Malzahar's point-and-click suppression. In side lane, Malzahar wins unless he misses the silence setup and lets her burst before R.

    • Save one interrupt for Death Lotus; using both silence and suppression early gives her a real opening.
    • Voidlings and minions can give Bouncing Blade bounce angles, so avoid standing beside low-health units.
    • If Katarina Shunpos defensively, she has given up the clean all-in.

  • Kayle

    KayleUnfavoured

Kayle can outrange Malzahar during Righteous Fury trades and Intervention denies the damage window that Malzahar needs from Nether Grasp.

Watch for Intervention: it makes Kayle immune during Malzahar's burst and can waste the entire Nether Grasp damage window.

    How to beat

Do not ult into Intervention unless you are using it only to force the cooldown. Poke with Malefic Visions and Call of the Void from maximum range, wait out Righteous Fury or Intervention, then commit before her ranged autos resume control of the fight.

Later Kayle is stronger in extended side-lane duels and teamfights if she can save Intervention for your suppression target. Malzahar should pressure waves and force Kayle to ult defensively before choosing the real Nether Grasp target.

    • Righteous Fury outranges your comfort zone once she is set up, so do not trade autos or linger after E.
    • Intervention does not remove suppression, but it can erase the damage that should make suppression lethal.
    • Call of the Void silence can delay her Intervention if timed before your burst lands.

  • Kennen

    KennenEven

Both champions have lethal control, with Kennen threatening mobile stun chains while Malzahar can win if he locks Kennen before Slicing Maelstrom takes over.

Watch for Slicing Maelstrom: it lets Kennen fight inside Malzahar's range while stacking stuns that can break the duel open.

    How to beat

Stay outside Lightning Rush engage range and avoid taking stray Mark of the Storm stacks before the real fight. If Kennen uses Lightning Rush to farm or reposition, punish the downtime with Malefic Visions and look for E, W, R before he can layer ultimate plus stun.

Later Kennen is often better in clustered teamfights because Slicing Maelstrom can hit multiple targets, while Malzahar remains better at a single pick. In side lane, the matchup stays playable if Malzahar respects flash-ultimate range and saves suppression for Kennen's commit.

    • Track your Mark of the Storm count; two marks means Kennen can force the third during your channel setup.
    • Suppressing Kennen after he starts Slicing Maelstrom may still leave your team taking storm damage.
    • Call of the Void can punish the predictable path of Lightning Rush.

  • Kog'Maw

    Kog'MawFavoured

Kog'Maw has high damage if allowed to free-hit, but he lacks a hard answer to Malzahar's point-and-click suppression once Malzahar reaches range.

Watch for Bio-Arcane Barrage: the bonus range and percent-health magic damage let Kog'Maw win if Malzahar walks in slowly through autos.

    How to beat

Do not approach in a straight line while Bio-Arcane Barrage is active; use minions and fog to enter Nether Grasp range. If Kog'Maw spends Void Ooze or W for waveclear, move in quickly and kill him with E, W, R before he can kite back.

Later Kog'Maw outscales in protected teamfights, but he remains very vulnerable to Malzahar if caught without peel. In side lane, Malzahar wins the direct duel if he can start the suppression before being shredded from extended W range.

    • Void Ooze is his main self-peel; crossing it before ulting often costs the kill.
    • After killing him, move away from Icathian Surprise instead of watching the DoT finish.
    • Bio-Arcane Barrage range is the warning that you should disengage or commit, not hover.

  • Lee Sin

    Lee SinUnfavoured

Lee Sin can start fights from range, burst through Malzahar's weak defenses, and use Dragon's Rage to interrupt or displace him before the combo finishes.

Watch for Dragon's Rage: the kick cancels Malzahar's positioning and can break the Nether Grasp fight before Lee dies.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions to deny Sonic Wave and avoid isolated river or jungle angles where he can chain Q into ward movement. If Lee misses Sonic Wave or uses Safeguard forward, drop Null Zone under the landing point and suppress before he can kick you away.

Later Lee Sin falls off as a pure duelist compared with hard scalers, but he remains excellent at disrupting Malzahar in skirmishes. In teamfights, wait for Dragon's Rage or Sonic Wave commitment before channeling, because a held kick makes your ultimate fragile.

    • A missed Sonic Wave is your clearest window; punish it immediately.
    • Do not ult Lee while he is still outside Null Zone unless your team damage is already there.
    • Voidlings can reveal or block some approach patterns, but they can also give him Safeguard targets if allies are nearby.

  • Leona

    LeonaFavoured

Leona can lock Malzahar down but usually lacks the solo damage to beat him if he survives the initial crowd control and channels afterward.

Watch for Zenith Blade: it gives Leona the range to start her stun chain and keep Malzahar from freely setting up.

    How to beat

Stay behind minions so Zenith Blade is harder to connect, and do not waste Nether Grasp into her Eclipse resist window unless you need to stop her engage. Once Zenith Blade or Solar Flare is down, kite back with Malefic Visions and suppress her after her crowd control chain ends.

Later Leona is not a side-lane threat to Malzahar, but she is dangerous in teamfights because her engage can interrupt your setup or force you defensive. Use Nether Grasp on Leona only when stopping her dive is more valuable than suppressing a carry.

    • Eclipse makes her much harder to burst, so wait out the resistance if possible.
    • If Zenith Blade misses, Leona has to walk through your silence and zone damage.
    • Her crowd control is the threat; her solo damage usually is not.

  • Lulu

    LuluEven

Malzahar has more kill pressure, but Lulu's shield, polymorph, slow, and Wild Growth can deny the exact single-target window he depends on.

Watch for Whimsy: polymorph stops Malzahar from casting or continuing his planned spell sequence at the moment he wants to ult.

    How to beat

Hold range and force Lulu to use Help, Pix! or Whimsy for poke trades before you commit. If Whimsy is down, Malzahar can E, W, R her; if it is up, approach as though your ultimate will be delayed or denied.

Later Lulu is more valuable grouped because she can save Malzahar's target with Wild Growth and disrupt his channel timing. In side lane, Malzahar can win if he baits Whimsy first, but finished Lulu is hard to burst cleanly through shield and bonus health.

    • Do not start Nether Grasp while Whimsy is available and Lulu is in cast range.
    • Wild Growth can keep her alive through the full channel, so chip damage first matters.
    • Glitterlance slow makes failed engages costly; commit only when you can finish or disengage cleanly.

  • Lux

    LuxEven

Lux outranges Malzahar and can punish failed approaches, but she dies quickly if Malzahar dodges Light Binding and reaches suppression range.

Watch for Light Binding: the root stops Malzahar's approach and gives Lux time to land Lucent Singularity plus Finales Funkeln.

    How to beat

Stand off the minion line so Light Binding cannot catch you through the wave, and pressure with Malefic Visions bounces instead of walking straight at her. When Light Binding misses, close the gap immediately and use E, W, R before her shield and second spell rotation come back.

Later Lux is stronger at long-range siege and objective poke, while Malzahar is stronger at punishing anyone who steps into his ultimate range. In side lane, Lux can waveclear safely, so Malzahar should use fog and flank angles rather than forcing through open lane skillshots.

    • A missed Light Binding is the matchup's main green light.
    • Prismatic Barrier can blunt your burst if she times both passes through herself, so avoid low-damage all-ins.
    • Call of the Void silence can interrupt her beam setup if you are already close enough.

  • Malphite

    MalphiteFavoured

Malzahar wins the isolated fight because Malphite has to spend Unstoppable Force to start, then gets trapped in Malefic Visions, Null Zone, and Nether Grasp where his armor-heavy kit does little.

Watch for Unstoppable Force is the engage window that knocks you up before you can silence or suppress him.

    How to beat

Stay outside his melee range and let Malefic Visions strip Granite Shield before you commit real mana. If he uses Unstoppable Force first, answer after the knockup with Null Zone into Nether Grasp; if he holds it, keep poking and do not walk close enough for free Ground Slam trades.

Later Malphite is more valuable in 5v5s because Unstoppable Force can start fights before Malzahar chooses a target, but he still does not beat Malzahar cleanly in a side lane. Stand behind your front line and suppress him only after he ults, or save Nether Grasp for the carry he enables.

    • Break Granite Shield with Malefic Visions before dropping Null Zone.
    • Do not channel Nether Grasp while Unstoppable Force is still available unless he is already committed or silenced.
    • Ground Slam's attack speed slow barely matters to you, so do not overvalue avoiding it.

    Master YiEven

Malzahar can kill Yi during Nether Grasp, but Yi's Alpha Strike and Meditate give him ways to dodge or blunt the combo if Malzahar commits too early.

Watch for Alpha Strike can dodge Call of the Void or the start of your damage window and place Yi directly on top of you.

    How to beat

Hold 550 range and make him spend Alpha Strike before you ult; casting Nether Grasp into an available Alpha Strike risks losing your setup damage. Once he appears, place Null Zone under him and suppress before Highlander autos and Wuju Style chew through you.

Later In side lane the duel stays volatile: Malzahar wins if he catches Yi without Alpha Strike, Yi wins if he reaches him with ult and Q available. In teamfights, keep Nether Grasp for Yi's Highlander entry unless your team has another hard answer.

    • Voidlings can pull Alpha Strike bounces, so avoid standing beside your wave when Yi is looking for an angle.
    • Do not let Meditate run while your main damage is down; interrupt it with Nether Grasp if that secures the kill.
    • Highlander ignores slows, so Rylai's kiting does not solve this matchup by itself.

Miss Fortune has comparable range but no reliable way to stop Nether Grasp, so Malzahar wins once he gets past her poke and lands the suppression combo.

Watch for Bullet Time can outdamage you if you are slowed by Make It Rain and forced to channel from a bad angle.

    How to beat

Trade from max spell range and avoid standing behind low minions where Double Up can bounce into you. If she starts Bullet Time, move out or cancel it with Nether Grasp; if she has no channel, E plus Null Zone into R is usually decisive.

Later Miss Fortune is more dangerous grouped because Bullet Time punishes clumped teams, while Malzahar is better at deleting one target. Flank vision and hold suppression for her if she commits to a channel in range.

    • Nether Grasp cancels Bullet Time, so do not panic ult before she starts it if she is not lethal yet.
    • Make It Rain's slow is her best way to keep you in her cone; sidestep before trading.

  • Morgana

    MorganaUnfavoured

Morgana is difficult because Black Shield blocks the magic damage and disable that Malzahar needs to make Nether Grasp lethal.

Watch for Black Shield can absorb Malefic Visions setup and prevent Nether Grasp's suppression until the shield is broken.

    How to beat

Do not spend Nether Grasp into a fresh Black Shield unless you already have enough damage ticking to break it immediately. Bait the shield with Malefic Visions or Call of the Void, keep out of Dark Binding lines, then commit while Black Shield is down.

Later Morgana is usually more useful in grouped fights because Black Shield can deny your pick on the real carry. In side lane you can still pressure waves, but winning the duel requires shield tracking rather than raw damage.

    • Call of the Void's silence is valuable only if Black Shield is absent or already broken.
    • Tormented Soil plus Soul Siphon lets her sustain passive wave trades better than most mages.
    • If Soul Shackles starts, suppressing her can stop her from walking with you, but it will not matter if Black Shield blocked the setup.

    NasusFavoured

Malzahar outranges and outdamages Nasus in the duel before Nasus can stack enough Siphoning Strike pressure to run him down.

Watch for Wither is the catch tool that can keep you in Fury of the Sands long enough for Nasus to reach repeated Siphoning Strikes.

    How to beat

Keep the wave at spell range and punish every Siphoning Strike attempt with Malefic Visions and Voidling pressure. If he Withers and ults forward, drop Null Zone under him and suppress before he gets extended melee uptime.

Later A finished Nasus becomes a real side-lane problem if he has enough stacks and magic resist, but he still hates being held in Null Zone during Fury of the Sands. In teamfights, suppress him only if he is the diver reaching your back line; otherwise burn his front line and keep your ult for carries.

    • Do not let him freely heal through minions with Soul Eater while your E is on cooldown.

  • Nidalee

    NidaleeEven

Nidalee wins if she lands long Javelin Toss poke before the all-in, but Malzahar wins if he gets a clean suppress when she changes into cougar or steps into range.

Watch for Javelin Toss is the health swing that can make you too low to channel a winning Nether Grasp.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions and avoid brush angles so Javelin Toss cannot start the fight for free. Push with Malefic Visions, then punish her cougar entry or missed spear with Null Zone into Nether Grasp before Primal Surge resets the trade.

Later Nidalee is better at siege and poke, while Malzahar is better at forcing one target to die if she ever enters 550 range. In side lane, clear waves and deny brush control rather than chasing her through traps and fog.

    • Bushwhack's resist shred makes the next spear or cougar trade much more dangerous; back off when marked.
    • Her cougar Pounce can leave Null Zone quickly, so suppress after she jumps in, not before.

Nunu is hard to kill through Consume sustain but has no clean answer to Malzahar's ranged damage and suppression in an isolated duel.

Watch for Absolute Zero forces you to either leave the zone or stop the channel before the burst lands.

    How to beat

Keep him at spell range and do not waste full rotations while Consume targets are available to heal off. Save Call of the Void or Nether Grasp timing for Absolute Zero; once that channel is interrupted or avoided, he has only Ice Blast trades.

Later Nunu's late-game value is mostly Blood Boil and objective control, not dueling Malzahar. In teamfights, interrupt Absolute Zero and then look past him for a higher-value Nether Grasp target.

    • Do not stand in minion waves where he can trade Ice Blast and immediately Consume for health.

Olaf is one of the worst duelists for Malzahar because Ragnarok ignores the suppression window Malzahar relies on and lets Olaf run him down.

Watch for Ragnarok removes your ability to stop him with Nether Grasp and lets him keep moving through your control.

    How to beat

Before level six, punish Undertow misses with E and autos from max range, but do not let him pick up axes for repeated slows. After six, kite until Ragnarok ends; only then can Null Zone plus Nether Grasp finish him.

Later Olaf wins most side-lane duels if he can force Ragnarok before losing too much health. In teamfights, do not ult him during Ragnarok; peel backward, let your team absorb the cooldown, then suppress a carry or Olaf after immunity expires.

    • Undertow pickup paths tell you where he wants to run; place Call of the Void across that line.
    • Reckless Swing true damage ignores your defensive stats, so health matters more than armor against his all-in.

Watch for Aegis of Zeonia is the point-and-click stun that starts Spear Shot into Heartseeker Strike before you can channel safely.

    How to beat

Stay outside his leap range and make him use Spear Shot for poke rather than as the opener to an all-in. If he jumps first, drop Null Zone under yourself and suppress as soon as the stun ends; if his passive blocks a Voidling or auto, do not let that bait you into melee range.

Later Pantheon falls off harder in full teamfights, but he can still punish Malzahar in side lanes with fog-of-war Grand Skyfall or flash stun. Group with vision and buy enough armor that his first combo does not force your ultimate defensively.

    • Aegis Protection does not block your spells, so do not waste time trying to remove it before casting.

Keep minions between you and Powerball angles, and silence him if he rolls straight down a lane. If he reaches you, wait out or absorb the taunt, then place Null Zone under Defensive Ball Curl and suppress while he is committed.

Later Rammus is much better as a pick tank against marksmen than as a Malzahar duelist. In teamfights, do not waste Nether Grasp on him unless he is the only diver stopping your carries; your magic damage already pressures him through armor stacking.

    • Defensive Ball Curl gives magic resist too, so the fight takes longer than his armor build suggests.
    • Puncturing Taunt can interrupt your spacing, but it cannot cancel a channel that starts afterward.
    • Tremors forces you to move, so avoid ulting in the middle of his full area damage unless lethal.
    BuyRylai's Crystal ScepterLiandry's Torment
  • Ryze

    RyzeUnfavoured

Ryze matches Malzahar's range and can root-combo through repeated low-cooldown spells, making the duel depend on Malzahar landing silence before Ryze starts his rotation.

Watch for Rune Prison locks you in place long enough for Spell Flux and Overload chains to win the damage race.

    How to beat

Trade only after Call of the Void threatens silence; if Ryze gets the first Rune Prison, you often lose the tempo before Nether Grasp matters. Keep away from minions when Spell Flux can bounce, then commit with E, W, and R when his root is down or he is silenced.

Later Ryze scales into a brutal short-range duelist and usually wins side-lane fights if he reaches root range first. In teamfights, your suppression is still stronger single-target lockdown, but you need magic resist and clean positioning to survive his Desperate Power burst.

    • Call of the Void is the key spell; missing it gives Ryze a free rotation window.
    • Do not stand near your Voidling or minions when Spell Flux can bounce for extra damage.
    • Suppressing him during Desperate Power denies his spell-vamp uptime if you are not already too low.
    BuyBanshee's VeilShushei's Mana JugTwin Shadows
  • Shaco

    ShacoEven

Shaco can kill Malzahar from stealth if he starts behind him, but Malzahar wins cleanly when Deceive is tracked and the real Shaco is suppressed.

Watch for Deceive is the stealth blink that bypasses your range and sets up Backstab burst before you can aim silence.

    How to beat

Play near minions or vision so Jack In The Box and Deceive paths are harder for him to set up. Do not ult the clone from Hallucinate; wait for the real Shaco to commit with Deceive or Two-Shiv Poison, then drop Null Zone under yourself and suppress.

Later Shaco prefers picks and split pressure, while Malzahar prefers controlled fights where stealth angles are warded. In side lane, push with spells and avoid chasing into boxes; in teamfights, save suppression for the real Shaco only if he dives your back line.

    • A sudden Shaco appearing behind you is usually the real all-in, not poke; cast defensively under your feet.
    • Jack In The Box fear can ruin your channel, so do not fight in areas he prepared first.
    • Hallucinate can waste your ultimate if you react to the nearest model instead of tracking his entry.
    BuyBanshee's VeilZhonya's HourglassSightstone
  • Shen

    ShenFavoured

Shen is durable and can taunt, but he lacks the sustained threat to beat Malzahar through ranged damage, Null Zone, and suppression in a straight duel.

Watch for Shadow Dash is the taunt window that can pull you into melee and interrupt your spacing before the combo.

    How to beat

Keep him at max range and punish every Vorpal Blade last-hit pattern with Malefic Visions. If he Shadow Dashes in, sidestep when possible, then cast Null Zone under him and Nether Grasp after the taunt ends.

Later Shen affects the map more than he beats Malzahar, using Stand United to turn fights rather than solo-kill you. Push side lanes cautiously, interrupt Stand United with Call of the Void or Nether Grasp when possible, and force him to answer waves.

    • Save a disable for Stand United if he tries to leave the duel.
    • Feint can absorb poke, but it does not protect him from a full zone-and-suppress sequence for long.
    • Do not stand close to your minion line where Shadow Dash can tag you while he farms.
    BuyRylai's Crystal ScepterLiandry's Torment
  • Singed

    SingedEven

Malzahar can punish Singed when he runs straight in, but Singed can break the fight open with Fling and Insanity Potion if Malzahar mispositions.

Watch for Fling displaces you into Poison Trail and can put you too far forward to channel safely.

    How to beat

Do not chase him through Poison Trail; make him come through your wave and take Malefic Visions bounces instead. Hold enough distance that Mega Adhesive alone does not guarantee Fling, then ult after he commits forward and cannot simply walk out of Null Zone.

Later Singed is better at side-lane disruption and proxy pressure, while Malzahar is better at forcing a real fight to stop. In teamfights, suppress Singed only if he reaches your carries; otherwise let slows and silence peel him while you kill higher-value targets.

    • Null Zone is good when Singed is running at you, bad when you are chasing him.
    • Insanity Potion makes short poke less meaningful, so commit only when you can finish the channel.
    • Mega Adhesive can make your ult positioning awkward; avoid fighting with it between you and safety.
BuyRylai's Crystal ScepterLiandry's TormentBoots of Swiftness
  • Sion

    SionEven

Malzahar wins if he stays out of Cryptic Gaze range and burns through Death's Caress, but Sion can stun into shield burst and lifesteal through extended melee trades.

Watch for Cryptic Gaze is the targeted stun that lets Sion land Death's Caress damage and start melee uptime.

    How to beat

Harass from 550 range and make him spend Death's Caress before you commit Nether Grasp. If he walks in for Cryptic Gaze, back up until the stun threat is forced, then place Null Zone where he must stand to keep attacking.

Later AD Sion becomes scarier in side lane if he reaches you with Cannibalism active, while AP-style Sion still depends on landing stun and shield burst. In teamfights, silence or suppress him before he gets sustained attacks, but avoid wasting your combo into a full shield unless it will break.

    • Death's Caress can soak your first damage wave, so patience matters more than instant ulting.
    • Cannibalism rewards extended melee uptime; kite backward instead of trading autos with Voidling nearby.
    • His passive reduces small physical hits, not your spell damage, so Voidling chip is less important than E and W timing.

  • Sivir

    SivirEven

Sivir's Spell Shield can deny Malzahar's key spell, but if it is baited out she has no answer to the full suppression combo.

Watch for Spell Shield can block Nether Grasp or Malefic Visions and refund Sivir enough tempo to win the trade.

    How to beat

Use Malefic Visions, Call of the Void edge pressure, or a Voidling-triggered moment to bait Spell Shield before casting Nether Grasp. Stay away from minion lines where Boomerang Blade and Ricochet get free value, then commit while Spell Shield is down.

Later Sivir is stronger in grouped front-to-back fights because On The Hunt lets her team choose the engage, but she remains vulnerable if her shield is down. In side lane, you can beat her with cooldown tracking; in teamfights, do not reveal your ult target until Spell Shield is unavailable or broken.

    • Never open with Nether Grasp into an unused Spell Shield.
    • Call of the Void can bait Spell Shield from outside her shorter auto range.
    • On The Hunt can pull her out of your follow-up damage if you delay after shield is down.
    BuyZhonya's HourglassSeeker's Armguard
  • Skarner

    SkarnerEven

Malzahar wins if he keeps Skarner outside melee until Nether Grasp, but Skarner can flip the duel with a shielded run-in into Impale.

Watch for Impale: suppresses Malzahar and drags him out of Null Zone or into Skarner's sustained melee damage.

    How to beat

Hold max spell range and use Malefic Visions plus Voidling pressure to break Crystalline Exoskeleton before Skarner reaches you. Do not channel Nether Grasp while Impale is available unless Skarner is already low enough to die during the suppression. If he burns W to close and fails, drop Null Zone under him and ult before Energize lets his cooldowns cycle again.

Later Skarner is more reliable in side lane if he can force short terrain angles, while Malzahar is stronger in teamfights when Impale is not aimed at him. Stay behind your front line, silence his engage path with Call of the Void, and save Nether Grasp for whoever follows his pull.

    • Call of the Void can stop Skarner's chase rhythm by silencing him after Crystalline Exoskeleton starts.
    • Voidlings help strip his shield, which removes the speed and attack speed attached to W.
    • If both ultimates are up, whoever channels second usually wins the duel.

  • Sona

    SonaFavoured

Sona has poke and Crescendo, but she is too fragile to survive a clean Malefic Visions, Null Zone, Nether Grasp setup alone.

Watch for Crescendo: interrupts your channel and gives Sona the only window to burst or escape before Nether Grasp lands.

    How to beat

Respect her 550 range Q trades, but do not let her tag you for free while Power Chord is ready. Bait Crescendo with forward movement, then commit as soon as it misses or is down. If she holds it, silence first with Call of the Void before placing Null Zone and ulting.

Later Sona does not want the side lane against Malzahar, but her teamfight auras and Crescendo can decide grouped fights. Stand off-angle from your team so one Crescendo cannot stop your whole engage, and punish her if she steps into spell range without peel.

    • Power Chord from W lowers your damage, so avoid ulting immediately after she cycles Aria of Perseverance.
    • Call of the Void is your cleanest way to deny Crescendo before committing.
    • Her healing is small in a duel; the fight is about whether Crescendo breaks your channel.
    BuyMercury's TreadsBanshee's Veil
  • Soraka

    SorakaFavoured

Soraka can silence and heal through poke, but she lacks the damage and mobility to beat Malzahar once Infuse is down.

Watch for Infuse: silences Malzahar and can stop the spell chain before Nether Grasp or Call of the Void comes out.

    How to beat

Trade with Malefic Visions from max range and force her to choose between using Infuse for damage or saving it for your engage. Once Infuse is down, she cannot stop Null Zone into Nether Grasp. Do not take repeated Starcall stacks at close range before committing.

Later Soraka will not usually duel Malzahar; she wins by keeping carries alive through his pick attempts. In teamfights, silence or ult her only if the enemy carry is unreachable, otherwise apply Grievous Wounds and force Wish before your full combo.

    • Consecration makes nearby allies harder to burst, so solo Soraka is much easier than Soraka standing in her backline.
    • Do not channel Nether Grasp into held Infuse unless Call of the Void has silenced her first.
    • Starcall only matters if you let her stand close long enough to stack magic resistance reduction.
    BuyMorellonomiconMercury's Treads
  • Taric

    TaricFavoured

Taric is durable against physical damage but has poor reach into Malzahar and cannot outdamage the full magic combo unless Dazzle starts the fight.

Watch for Dazzle: stuns Malzahar long enough for Taric to walk into point-blank Shatter and Radiance damage.

    How to beat

Keep outside Dazzle range until you have minion or Voidling pressure, then punish him when he walks up to threaten the stun. If Dazzle is down, he has no real way to stop Nether Grasp. Place Null Zone where he must stand to fight, not where he currently is while retreating.

Later Taric is more valuable grouped than alone because his stun and armor aura protect a carry, but Malzahar wins the isolated lane. In teamfights, avoid ulting Taric unless his Dazzle is the only thing stopping your carry from cleaning up.

    • Shatter's armor aura does very little against your magic-heavy damage.
    • His heal buys time, but it does not answer Null Zone under Nether Grasp.
    • If Taric saves Dazzle, open with Call of the Void before the channel.
  • Teemo

    TeemoEven

Malzahar can burst Teemo if he finds him first, but Teemo's poison, Move Quick spacing, and mushrooms make a blind chase dangerous.

Watch for Noxious Trap: controls the approach path and can slow Malzahar out of Nether Grasp range before the duel starts.

    How to beat

Do not chase through unwarded brush or lane edges; force Teemo to fight in minion waves where Malefic Visions can spread and reveal his movement pattern. Poke him with E and Q until Move Quick is broken, then flash or walk into Nether Grasp range only when the path is known. Blinding Dart is annoying but does not stop your spell damage, so the fight is about vision and spacing.

Later Teemo can make side lanes miserable with trap fields, but Malzahar is much more decisive in grouped fights. Sweep paths with allies, avoid entering mushroom zones alone, and use Nether Grasp on him if he overextends without a trapped retreat.

    • Voidlings can trigger or reveal trap danger before you face-check the same path.
    • Breaking Move Quick with any champion damage makes Teemo much easier to line up for Call of the Void.
    • Do not let Camouflage turn the duel into his first auto plus mushroom setup.
    BuyTwin ShadowsBanshee's Veil
  • Tristana

    TristanaUnfavoured

Tristana's Rocket Jump and Buster Shot give her multiple ways to break range or interrupt Malzahar before his full channel kills her.

Watch for Buster Shot: knocks Malzahar away and cancels the position he needs for Null Zone plus Nether Grasp pressure.

    How to beat

Stay outside her auto range as it scales and trade only when Rocket Jump is down or used aggressively. If she jumps onto you, drop Null Zone at the landing spot and silence before ulting so Buster Shot cannot immediately break the setup. Never start Nether Grasp while she still has both jump and ultimate unless she is already caught by Call of the Void.

Later Tristana outscales the side-lane duel if she has space, and she is a major teamfight threat behind peel. Malzahar should play fog and force a pick with silence or flash-ult rather than walking at her front-to-back range.

    • Rocket Jump's landing slow makes it hard to reposition Null Zone if you panic backward.
    • Her range grows with levels, so equal range early becomes her advantage later.
    • Buster Shot can deny your kill even when she is low, so lead with silence when possible.

  • Tryndamere

    TryndamereUnfavoured

Tryndamere can survive Malzahar's lethal window with Undying Rage and then kill him once Nether Grasp ends.

Watch for Undying Rage: prevents Tryndamere from dying during your suppression burst and lets him keep attacking afterward.

    How to beat

Harass before Fury is stacked and keep enough distance that Spinning Slash cannot start the fight for free. Your goal is to force Undying Rage without spending Nether Grasp, then kite until it expires and finish with Malefic Visions or Call of the Void. If he spins in with full Fury and ultimate ready, use silence and terrain to disengage rather than taking the all-in.

Later Tryndamere is the stronger finished side-laner because he can force towers and ignore one lethal combo. Malzahar should answer waves from range, call for help after Undying Rage is forced, and save Nether Grasp for teamfights where allies can chain damage after his ultimate ends.

    • Do not ult him at the start of Undying Rage unless your team can finish him after it wears off.
    • Call of the Void during his retreat can stop Bloodlust timing or a second Spinning Slash setup.
    • Low-health Tryndamere is more dangerous, not less, because Battle Fury increases his crit threat.

  • Twisted Fate

    Twisted FateEven

Malzahar wins the committed duel, but Twisted Fate can poke safely and turn the fight with Gold Card if Malzahar walks in predictably.

Watch for Pick A Card Gold Card: stuns Malzahar and can interrupt the setup before Nether Grasp starts.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions to reduce Wild Cards pressure and watch his card cycle before stepping forward. When Gold Card is down or he locks the wrong card, move into E range and threaten Call of the Void into Nether Grasp. If he holds Gold Card, silence first or wait; do not offer him a clean stun into full trade.

Later Twisted Fate's side-lane value comes from Destiny and Gate, not beating Malzahar straight up. Push waves quickly, ping his disappearance, and keep Nether Grasp for the arrival point if he tries to port behind your team.

    • Call of the Void can punish the brief moment after he locks a card but before he throws it.
    • Destiny's slow can make your escape awkward, but it does not win the duel by itself.
    • If TF uses Gate away from lane, Malzahar should shove immediately rather than chase.

  • Twitch

    TwitchUnfavoured

Twitch's Ambush opener and Spray and Pray burst can kill Malzahar before he gets a clean suppression unless Malzahar has vision or catches him first.

Watch for Ambush: lets Twitch choose the opening angle and start the fight with poison stacks before Malzahar can aim silence.

    How to beat

Do not stand alone in fog when Twitch is missing; the duel changes completely if you see him before Ambush breaks. If he appears, cast Call of the Void across his firing line and drop Null Zone at your feet before deciding whether Nether Grasp is safe. Commit only when Spray and Pray is down or when silence lands first.

Later Twitch is stronger in late teamfights if he opens from stealth onto multiple targets, but Malzahar remains a strong answer to a revealed Twitch. Buy time with positioning, keep wards on flank paths, and ult him the instant he commits without Cleanse-style protection.

    • Voidlings can reveal his direction after Ambush breaks by moving toward him in combat.
    • Venom Cask's slow makes it much harder to step into ult range, so avoid eating it before your engage.
    • Spray and Pray can hit through your frontline; standing behind tanks is not enough if he has the angle.
    BuySightstoneZhonya's HourglassNinja Tabi
  • Vayne

    VayneUnfavoured

Vayne has enough mobility, invisibility, and Condemn disruption to dodge Malzahar's setup and punish him at short range.

Watch for Condemn: knocks Malzahar out of his commit path or into a wall stun, denying the Nether Grasp window.

    How to beat

Fight away from walls and do not chase blindly during Final Hour Tumble invisibility. Use Malefic Visions to keep damage ticking and wait for Tumble before aiming Call of the Void. If Condemn is down or she tumbles forward, flash-ult with Null Zone already under her.

Later Vayne wins isolated side-lane duels once she has room to kite and enough damage to shred health. Malzahar should avoid long lanes alone, clear waves safely, and save Nether Grasp for a teamfight pick after Condemn or Tumble is forced.

    • Wall position matters more here than raw health; Condemn into terrain loses the duel instantly.
    • Final Hour Tumble can make Call of the Void miss if you cast at her current position.
    • Do not rely on Voidlings to block her damage; Silver Bolts makes extended trades favor her.

  • Veigar

    VeigarEven

Both mages can kill each other, with Veigar threatening a stun-and-burst combo while Malzahar has the stronger guaranteed kill if he avoids Event Horizon.

Watch for Event Horizon: cages Malzahar and sets up Dark Matter plus Primordial Burst before he can channel safely.

    How to beat

Stay just outside the cage threat and make Veigar use Event Horizon defensively before committing. If the cage misses or he places it poorly, walk through the safe interior angle, apply Malefic Visions, place Null Zone, and ult before Primordial Burst finishes you. Avoid stacking unnecessary AP-only greed in this duel because his ultimate scales off your AP.

Later Veigar's burst becomes more punishing as both builds finish, especially against high-AP Malzahar. In teamfights, let someone else pressure the cage first, then punish Veigar's long cooldown with silence or Nether Grasp.

    • Do not flash into the edge of Event Horizon; only the perimeter stuns.
    • Call of the Void can stop Primordial Burst if you catch him before he casts it.
    • Your AP makes his ultimate hit harder, so defensive magic resist has real value here.

  • Warwick

    WarwickEven

Malzahar can kite and burst Warwick, but Warwick's sustain and Infinite Duress give him a direct answer if he reaches melee first.

Watch for Infinite Duress: suppresses Malzahar and interrupts his channel while Warwick heals through the trade setup.

    How to beat

Harass at max range and do not let Hungering Strike trades happen for free, because his passive healing wins short melee exchanges. If Infinite Duress is available, keep enough distance that he must overextend through silence and Voidling damage to cast it. Once his ultimate is down, Null Zone plus Nether Grasp outdamages his healing.

Later Warwick can side-lane into Malzahar if he gets the first suppress, but Malzahar is more valuable at deleting priority targets in grouped fights. Track his ultimate, stay out of flank range, and consider suppressing Warwick only after he has used Infinite Duress.

    • Blood Scent punishes greedy low-health recalls, so leave lane before you become an easy chase target.
    • Hungering Strike's heal makes half-combos bad; commit cleanly or disengage.
    • QSS changes the duel because it lets you break Infinite Duress and answer with Nether Grasp.

  • Wukong

    WukongUnfavoured

Wukong's dash, Decoy mind game, and Cyclone interrupt make it difficult for Malzahar to land the correct target and finish his channel.

Watch for Cyclone: knocks Malzahar up and cancels the fight before Nether Grasp can finish.

    How to beat

Keep the wave between you and Wukong so Nimbus Strike cannot always choose the best angle. When he uses Decoy, do not instantly ult the first visible body; wait for the shimmer or damage confirmation from Malefic Visions. If Cyclone is down, he is much easier to lock in Null Zone and suppress.

Later Wukong is the better side-lane and teamfight diver if he reaches Malzahar, but he hates being suppressed after his engage is spent. Position wide of your carries, silence his entry, and hold Nether Grasp until Decoy or Cyclone no longer breaks the play.

    • Malefic Visions ticking on the real Wukong helps identify him after Decoy.
    • Do not channel Nether Grasp into an unused Cyclone unless he is already silenced.
    • Nimbus Strike through minions can close more distance than the lane state appears to allow.

  • Zilean

    ZileanEven

Zilean can outrange and reset the kill with Chronoshift, but Malzahar wins if he forces the revive before spending everything or catches him without it.

Watch for Chronoshift: denies Malzahar's burst kill and brings Zilean back after Nether Grasp has already been spent.

    How to beat

Avoid taking repeated Time Bomb trades at 600 range; close only when Time Warp or Rewind has been used. Try to force Chronoshift with Malefic Visions, Voidling damage, and Call of the Void before committing Nether Grasp. If he casts Chronoshift early, step back, let it expire if possible, then re-engage during its cooldown.

Later Zilean rarely wants the pure duel, but he can ruin Malzahar's pick pattern by reviving the target you suppress. In teamfights, track Chronoshift first, silence him when he moves up to save someone, and be willing to ult a different carry if his revive is ready.

    • Time Warp's slow can keep you out of Nether Grasp range even when Zilean is low.
    • Do not dump full combo into an active Chronoshift marker unless your team can kill him twice.
    • Call of the Void can interrupt his spell cycle long enough to stop a clutch revive.
