  • Leap Strike (Q) takes points at levels 3, 8, 10, 12, 13.
  • Empower (W) takes points at levels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9.
  • Counter Strike (E) takes points at levels 1, 14, 15, 17, 18.
  • Grandmaster's Might (R) takes points at levels 6, 11, 16.

Start Counter Strike for level 1 trading safety, then max W first for low-cooldown burst with autos and Leap Strike. Q is maxed second for engage uptime, with E finished last after its early utility point.

Alternative — Max E before Q against heavy auto-attack tops where shorter Counter Strike cooldown decides trades, such as Tryndamere or Irelia.

  • 2

Hextech Gunblade3,400gHextech Gunblade gives mixed damage, sustain, and an active slow that helps Jax stick after Leap Strike.

  • 3

Randuin's Omen3,125gRanduin's Omen supplies the armor and health needed to dive or split-push into physical carries, with an active slow for teamfights.

  • Ninja Tabi1,000gBuy Ninja Tabi over Mercury's Treads into AD-heavy teams or auto-attack lane bullies.

  • Wit's End2,150gBuy Wit's End when you need earlier magic resistance while still increasing on-hit DPS.

  • Maw of Malmortius3,200gBuy Maw of Malmortius against burst AP threats when Hexdrinker value is needed before finishing full defense.

  • Quicksilver Sash1,550gBuy Quicksilver Sash when one suppress, stun, or debuff is the only thing stopping your split-push or backline dive.

  • Blade of The Ruined King3,200gBuy Blade of the Ruined King against very high-health frontlines when sustained dueling matters more than Gunblade burst.

Matchup against

62 champions, one-on-one
  • Ahri

    AhriEven

Jax wins if he reaches Ahri after Charm or Spirit Rush is down, but her true-damage return on Orb of Deception and triple dash make clean all-ins hard to force.

Watch for Charm: stops Leap Strike engages and gives Ahri the space to land Orb of Deception both ways.

    How to beat

Hold just outside Charm range and look for Leap Strike only after she uses Charm to farm, poke, or misses it. If she keeps Spirit Rush, trade with Leap Strike plus Empower, then back off before she kites through all three dashes; commit when at least one mobility tool is gone.

Later In a side lane Jax can eventually run her down if Charm is baited, but Ahri is better at joining fights and picking carries. Keep split pressure, force her to answer, and do not enter teamfights through fog where Charm starts the fight.

    • Leap Strike sideways after the first Orb hit so the true-damage return misses.
    • Do not Counter Strike early; Ahri's damage is mostly spells, so save E for tower dives or minion aggro trades.
    • Banshee's Veil turns her pick pattern into a much safer side-lane chase for Jax.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsHexdrinker
  • Akali

    AkaliFavoured

Jax's sustained melee DPS and Counter Strike punish Akali once she commits, and he can stay on her if Twilight Shroud is handled patiently.

Watch for Twilight Shroud: denies target access and lets Akali wait out Counter Strike instead of fighting during it.

    How to beat

Do not blow Leap Strike into the center of Shroud unless she is already low enough to die. Walk with her edge, keep Counter Strike for the moment she uses Shadow Dance in, then stun and trade while Mark of the Assassin is not ready for a second proc.

Later Jax wins the side lane harder as items stack, while Akali remains more threatening to backline targets in messy fights. Force her to answer side waves and bring vision or sweepers before committing around Shroud terrain.

    • If she marks you with Q, back up until the mark is close to expiring before letting her R in.
    • Counter Strike does not reveal her in Shroud, so use it for the stun timing, not as a tracking tool.
    • Gunblade active helps keep her from leaving Shroud after the stun lands.
    BuyHextech GunbladeSpirit VisageBanshee's Veil
  • Alistar

    AlistarFavoured

Alistar can disengage and survive with Unbreakable Will, but he lacks the sustained damage to beat Jax in a straight duel.

Watch for Headbutt: breaks Jax's all-in window by knocking him out after Leap Strike or Counter Strike starts.

    How to beat

Do not chase blindly after Headbutt; let him spend the knockback, then re-enter with Leap Strike or movement speed from items. Save Counter Strike for the actual brawl rather than his Pulverize setup, because the stun window matters only when he cannot immediately push you away.

Later Jax owns the side lane, but Alistar is much more relevant as a front-line peel and engage support. Split when possible, and in teamfights avoid wasting cooldowns into Unbreakable Will unless his carries are unreachable.

    • If Alistar ults, stop committing burst and use the time to reposition for the next Leap Strike.
    • Counter Strike cannot stop Pulverize or Headbutt, so do not treat E as a defensive answer to his combo.
    • Mercury's Treads are enough if his team has follow-up crowd control.
    BuyMercury's Treads
  • Amumu

    AmumuFavoured

Amumu has strong lockdown and percent-health damage, but Jax's sustained single-target damage outpaces him once Bandage Toss and Curse of the Sad Mummy are spent.

Watch for Curse of the Sad Mummy: freezes Jax in Despair range and buys Amumu time for his team or another Bandage Toss.

    How to beat

Side-step Bandage Toss before leaping; if he misses it, Jax can force a long trade immediately. In melee, use Counter Strike for damage reduction and the stun after Amumu has committed, then keep hitting through Tantrum rather than taking short poke trades into Despair.

Later Jax still beats Amumu alone in the side lane, but Amumu's teamfight engage is far more decisive than his duel. Pressure side waves and avoid grouping tightly where Curse of the Sad Mummy catches Jax with his backline.

    • Do not start the duel by leaping in a straight line from max range; that gives him an easy Bandage Toss.
    • Quicksilver Sash can remove his ultimate if the enemy team relies on that lockup.
    • Wit's End is valuable because Amumu's damage and passive both push the fight into magic damage.
    BuyWit's EndQuicksilver SashMercury's Treads
  • Anivia

    AniviaUnfavoured

Anivia can deny Jax's engage with Flash Frost, Crystallize, and Glacial Storm, then force him to kill her twice through Rebirth.

Watch for Flash Frost: interrupts Jax's approach and sets up Frostbite while he is still outside sustained melee range.

    How to beat

Hold minion cover and never Leap Strike in a straight line while Flash Frost is ready. Bait Q first, then leap immediately before she can wall the path; if Rebirth triggers, only finish the egg if Glacial Storm and wall cannot trap you under return damage.

Later Anivia is difficult for Jax to reach in teamfights and defends side lanes well with waveclear, but she still hates being forced to answer long side pressure alone. Jax should split patiently, draw her wall and ultimate, then rotate before she stalls forever.

    • Leap Strike can cross her wall if you have a target on the other side.
    • Do not chase through Glacial Storm after the first stun; the slow keeps you in double Frostbite range.
    • Banshee's Veil blocking Flash Frost often creates the only clean engage.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMercury's TreadsSpirit Visage
  • Annie

    AnnieUnfavoured

Annie's point-and-click burst and Pyromania stun make it hard for Jax to enter without losing most of his health before he can sustain a fight.

Watch for Pyromania-stunned Summon: Tibbers: locks Jax in place while Annie lands her full burst and Tibbers keeps burning during the chase.

    How to beat

Track her stun count and do not Leap Strike when Pyromania is ready unless you can kill immediately. Force her to spend stun on the wave or a defensive spell, then engage before she rebuilds four casts; after Tibbers drops, either finish fast or leave before the bear and cooldowns grind you down.

Later Jax wins side pressure if he can catch Annie without stun, but Annie's teamfight burst is much easier to execute. Flank from fog or split away from her grouped stun instead of front-lining into Tibbers.

    • Counter Strike does not stop Disintegrate, Incinerate, or Tibbers, so do not rely on E to survive her combo.
    • Banshee's Veil can eat the first stun spell and turn the duel around.
    • If her stun is stored, make her last-hit or zone her rather than starting the fight.
    BuyBanshee's VeilHexdrinkerMercury's Treads
  • Ashe

    AsheFavoured

Ashe can kite with Frost Shot and arrow, but if Jax reaches her with Leap Strike and Counter Strike she cannot win the melee duel.

Watch for Enchanted Crystal Arrow: stops Jax's engage or escape long enough for Ashe to create Frost Shot distance.

    How to beat

Approach from brush or behind minions so Volley and auto slows do not start at max range. Save Leap Strike until she has committed to a direction, then Counter Strike as you land to dodge her autos and stun before she can walk out; if arrow is still up, expect it at point blank.

Later Jax crushes Ashe in a side lane, while Ashe is much stronger when protected in a five-on-five. Split to force someone else to answer, or flank fights after arrow is used instead of running straight at her front line.

    • Boots of Swiftness reduce the Frost Shot problem more than extra damage does.
    • Counter Strike blanks her main damage during the seconds when she most needs to kite.
    • Do not Leap Strike while she is holding arrow at long range unless you have a follow target afterward.
    BuyBoots of SwiftnessNinja TabiQuicksilver Sash
  • Blitzcrank

    BlitzcrankFavoured

Blitzcrank can disrupt Jax with grabs and knockups, but he does not have the sustained damage to beat Jax after the combo is over.

Watch for Rocket Grab: pulls Jax out of position and can start the fight before Counter Strike or Leap Strike are used correctly.

    How to beat

In a pure duel, let Blitzcrank miss or spend Rocket Grab before committing; if he grabs you alone, Counter Strike immediately and turn the fight. Respect Mana Barrier when calculating lethal and keep hitting through Overdrive's brief attack-speed window.

Later Jax wins the side lane easily, while Blitzcrank's value is picks before objectives. Keep minions or wards between you and hook paths, and punish him if he uses Rocket Grab on anyone who can survive it.

    • Power Fist is an empowered basic attack, so Counter Strike can dodge it if timed before the hit lands.
    • Mana Barrier makes him look killable before he actually is; hold one burst tool for after it appears.
    • Mercury's Treads matter only if his team has follow-up crowd control.
    BuyMercury's Treads
  • Brand

    BrandUnfavoured

Brand's spell chain and percent-health burn punish Jax's item-scaling health, and Jax has to dodge multiple skillshots before a duel is actually playable.

Watch for Sear: stuns Jax when Brand has already applied Blaze, turning the engage into a full spell rotation.

    How to beat

Do not Leap Strike after being tagged by Pillar of Flame or Conflagration unless Sear is down. Bait the stun projectile first, then commit hard; if Pyroclasm is available, avoid fighting beside minions or allied units that give it extra bounces.

Later Jax beats Brand if he catches him alone without stun, but Brand's grouped damage can decide teamfights before Jax reaches the backline. Split and flank from angles where Brand must choose between throwing Sear defensively or saving it for your carry.

    • Your bonus health makes Blaze and Liandry-style damage more punishing, so magic resistance is high value.
    • Counter Strike does little against Brand's real damage; use it for the stun, not mitigation.
    • Banshee's Veil blocking Sear or Conflagration often decides whether you get to play the fight.
    BuyBanshee's VeilMaw of MalmortiusMercury's Treads
  • Cho'Gath

    Cho'GathEven

Jax can out-DPS Cho'Gath in an extended fight, but Rupture, Feral Scream, and Feast give Cho'Gath enough control and execute damage to punish a bad engage.

Watch for Feral Scream: silences Jax before Empower, Leap Strike follow-up, or Counter Strike recast, breaking his burst window.

    How to beat

Move laterally until Rupture is down, then engage before it comes back. Do not let Feral Scream silence you during Counter Strike's recast timing; if he holds Feast, treat low health as lethal much earlier than against other tanks.

Later Jax usually becomes the better side-lane duelist, but Cho'Gath is harder to ignore around objectives because his silence and knockup protect carries. Build to survive the mixed burst, split him away from his team, and disengage before Feast range if the fight turns.

    • Leap Strike after Rupture starts, not before; otherwise he places it under your landing spot.
    • Feast is true damage, so pure resist stacking does not save a low-health all-in.
    • Madred's Bloodrazor is one of the few catalog items that specifically punishes his huge health pool.
    BuyMadred's BloodrazorBanshee's VeilMercury's Treads
  • Corki

    CorkiEven

Jax wins if he sticks after Valkyrie, but Corki's mixed damage, armor shred, and escape make the first engage unreliable.

Watch for Valkyrie: denies Jax's Counter Strike stun window and leaves a damage trail that punishes chasing in a straight line.

    How to beat

Pressure until Corki uses Valkyrie defensively, then use Leap Strike after the displacement rather than before it. Keep Counter Strike for his auto-attack burst during Gatling Gun, and step out of the cone if he commits to armor shred instead of standing still trading.

Later Jax wins isolated side fights once Valkyrie is forced, while Corki contributes safer poke and mixed DPS in grouped fights. Split to make him spend Valkyrie away from his team, then either finish the chase or rotate while his escape is down.

    • Do not chase down the Valkyrie fire trail unless Corki is already in lethal range.
    • Counter Strike blocks his basic attacks but not Phosphorus Bomb, Gatling Gun, or missiles.
    • Wit's End is efficient because Corki's duel damage is heavily mixed.
    BuyWit's EndNinja TabiBanshee's Veil
  • Dr. Mundo

    Dr. MundoEven

Jax can beat Mundo before Sadism takes over, but Mundo's cleaver slow and regeneration can drag the duel past Jax's clean kill window.

Watch for Sadism: restores enough health during the all-in that Jax can run out of cooldowns and be forced to chase through cleavers.

    How to beat

Dodge or minion-block Infected Cleaver before using Leap Strike; if the first slow lands, Mundo controls the distance. Commit when Sadism is down or when you have Grievous Wounds ready, and keep trades shorter while Burning Agony is active unless you are sure you can finish.

Later With anti-heal and sustained damage, Jax can side-lane into Mundo, but Mundo is harder to remove quickly and can soak more in teamfights. Force extended side pressure, apply Grievous Wounds early, and avoid spending everything into his ultimate without a second chase tool.

    • Executioner's Calling should be applied before Sadism heals through the duel.
    • Counter Strike only answers his basic attacks; Cleaver and Burning Agony still do the work.

  • Evelynn

    EvelynnFavoured

Evelynn has burst and surprise, but once revealed in melee Jax's Counter Strike and sustained damage overpower her.

Watch for Agony's Embrace: chunks current health and slows Jax, letting Evelynn decide whether the fight continues.

    How to beat

Keep the lane warded and do not let her open from camouflage with free Ravage damage. When she appears, Counter Strike after her first commit so she cannot keep trading autos, then Leap Strike if she uses Dark Frenzy speed to leave.

Later Jax wins the side duel, while Evelynn is more dangerous through flanks and picks on carries. Keep side-lane vision deep, force her to answer visible waves, and group only when her engage angle is controlled.

    • Feral Flare or Wriggle's Lantern wards are specifically valuable because Shadow Walk changes how the duel starts.
    • Do not use Leap Strike first if she can simply slow with Agony's Embrace and walk out.
    • Magic resistance matters more than armor against her usual burst pattern.

  • Ezreal

    EzrealEven

Ezreal can kite forever if Arcane Shift is held, but Jax wins hard when he forces the blink and still has Leap Strike or a slow to follow.

Watch for Arcane Shift: resets the spacing after Jax commits and can waste Counter Strike's stun window.

    How to beat

Walk up and threaten before using Leap Strike; make Ezreal spend Arcane Shift first if possible. If he holds it, use a short trade with Leap Strike and Empower, then re-engage when his blink is down; avoid taking repeated Mystic Shots while waiting.

Later Jax wins side lane when he has a way to stick, but Ezreal is safer in sieges and grouped poke patterns. Split until he answers alone, then force Arcane Shift and chase with item slows or Leap Strike targets.

    • Do not Counter Strike before Arcane Shift unless you are already in stun range.
    • Essence Flux lowers your attack speed, so avoid committing through it when your ultimate stacks are not built.

  • Fiddlesticks

    FiddlesticksUnfavoured

Fiddlesticks can fear Jax out of his engage and Drain through the duel unless Jax interrupts or cleanses the channel at the right time.

Watch for Terrify: removes control of Jax during the engage and lets Fiddlesticks set up Drain or Crowstorm damage.

    How to beat

Do not Leap Strike into him while Terrify is ready unless you have enough tenacity or cleanse to survive the follow-up. After fear is used, stun Drain with Counter Strike's recast and commit before it comes back; if Crowstorm starts from fog, leave first and fight after the channel damage is gone.

Later Jax can side-lane against Fiddlesticks if he controls fear and Drain, but Fiddlesticks is much more dangerous from fog in teamfights. Keep wards over walls, split away from his ultimate angles, and save QSS-style answers for fear when a fight decides the game.

    • Counter Strike's stun should be saved to break Drain, not used just for damage.
    • Quicksilver Sash removes fear and can turn his cleanest duel pattern.
    • Never chase into unwarded brush when Crowstorm is available.

  • Gangplank

    GangplankFavoured

Jax's Counter Strike denies Gangplank's basic-attack fighting pattern, and Remove Scurvy cannot cleanse enough of Jax's sustained damage to win straight up.

Watch for Remove Scurvy: clears Counter Strike's stun and heals through the burst that normally locks Gangplank in place.

    How to beat

Trade after Parrrley is used on a minion or into Counter Strike timing, then force him to spend Remove Scurvy on the stun. Once W is down, re-engage with Leap Strike and Empower; avoid standing in Cannon Barrage if he uses it to slow the chase.

Later Jax wins the side lane, while Gangplank contributes global pressure and teamwide zone control with Cannon Barrage. Keep him trapped in side waves and watch for his ultimate affecting fights you are not attending.

    • Counter Strike can dodge Parrrley because it is treated like an attack in this matchup pattern.
    • Do not rely on the stun alone; he can Remove Scurvy it and keep moving.

  • Garen

    GarenFavoured

Jax wins extended trades because Counter Strike blanks Garen's Decisive Strike attack and Jax's attack-speed ramp outscales Garen's spin damage once the silence is avoided.

Watch for Demacian Justice executes you if you take a long trade too low before disengaging.

    How to beat

Keep just outside Decisive Strike range and let Garen spend the movement speed before you commit. Start Counter Strike as he runs in so the Q hit is dodged, then punish after Judgment finishes and stay on him with Leap Strike and Empower. Do not re-enter when you are in Demacian Justice range unless you can finish immediately.

Later Jax owns the side lane when even because Garen cannot stop the sustained duel without his execute. In teamfights Garen is more useful if he silences and executes a carry, so Jax should split or flank after Garen uses Decisive Strike.

    • Counter Strike should cover Decisive Strike, not Judgment.
    • Hit him often enough to keep Perseverance from resetting the lane.
    • Back out before Demacian Justice turns a won trade into a death.
    • Leap after he uses the Q speed, not into it.

  • Gragas

    GragasEven

Jax can kill Gragas if he gets a clean all-in, but Barrel Roll attack-speed slow, Body Slam peel, and Explosive Cask make sticking to him unreliable.

Watch for Barrel Roll slows your Attack Speed and ruins the window where Grandmaster's Might should win the trade.

    How to beat

Hold enough distance that Gragas has to choose between using Body Slam to engage or saving it to escape. Bait Barrel Roll first, then Leap Strike after it detonates or misses so your autos are not slowed during Counter Strike. Save a second gap close or item slow for after Body Slam, because his first peel usually decides the duel.

Later Finished Jax wins the side lane if Gragas cannot repeatedly disengage, but Gragas contributes more immediate disruption in grouped fights with Explosive Cask. Split him when his waveclear is not enough, and avoid committing before Cask is used.

    • Do not all-in through the Barrel Roll attack-speed slow.
    • Stand off the minion wave so Body Slam cannot hit you and clear at the same time.
    • Counter Strike is less valuable against his spell damage, so use it for stun timing.
    • If Explosive Cask knocks you away after Leap Strike, the duel resets in his favor.

  • Heimerdinger

    HeimerdingerUnfavoured

Heimerdinger's turret nest and blind punish Jax for entering melee before he has already cleared the setup.

Watch for CH-1 Concussion Grenade stuns or blinds you, denying the auto attacks you need after Leap Strike.

    How to beat

Do not jump into multiple H-28G Evolution Turrets unless grenade is down. Trim turrets first, then threaten Leap Strike from an angle where rockets are less likely to pick you as the closest target. Commit only after grenade misses, because Counter Strike does not solve blind or turret spell pressure.

Later Jax wins an isolated duel away from turrets, but Heimerdinger's finished setup is much better at controlling grouped sieges and choke points. Force side-lane fights in open space or make him move before engaging.

    • Count turrets before you Leap Strike; two or more turns the fight hard.
    • Grenade blind can waste your Empower follow-up even if you are not stunned.
    • Fight him between waves so rockets have fewer nearby targets to choose from.
    • A turret nest is terrain control, not a normal melee duel.

    JannaFavoured

Jax wins the duel if he ever reaches Janna, but she is built to deny the fight rather than take it.

Watch for Monsoon knocks you out of melee and resets your all-in.

    How to beat

This is rarely a real side-lane duel; she appears when protecting someone else. If forced into 1v1, walk up before using Leap Strike and make her spend Howling Gale or Zephyr, then jump after the displacement is gone. Save Counter Strike for the stun, not for damage reduction, because her threat is disengage.

Later Jax wins the side lane for free, while Janna wins teamfights by peeling Jax off carries. Flank from fog and force Monsoon before committing onto the real target.

    • Do not open with Leap Strike if Monsoon is ready.
    • Her shield can make her return autos matter more than expected.
    • A charged Howling Gale behind her escape path is the real anti-Jax setup.
    • Killing Janna usually means catching her without allies, not outdueling her frontally.

  • Jarvan IV

    Jarvan IVEven

Jax wins the extended auto fight, but Jarvan's armor shred, shield slow, and Cataclysm can front-load enough control to make the duel close.

Watch for Dragon Strike lowers your Armor before his burst and Martial Cadence damage land.

    How to beat

Avoid standing in a straight line with Demacian Standard so the knock-up combo is harder to land. If Jarvan uses Dragon Strike early, turn on Counter Strike and force the long fight while his armor shred window is ending. Leap Strike can follow Cataclysm or escape it if you have a ward or target available, so do not spend it casually before level 6.

Later Jax usually wins the side lane once both are finished, especially if Jarvan cannot burst him before Counter Strike lands. Jarvan's teamfight engage is stronger, so Jax should split or enter after Cataclysm and Dragon Strike have committed.

    • Do not let Dragon Strike plus Martial Cadence be his first free hit.
    • Counter Strike dodges his passive auto, which is a large part of his short trade.
    • Keep a Leap Strike target ready before Cataclysm.
    • If he uses Golden Aegis only to slow, keep chasing after the shield expires.

  • Karthus

    KarthusFavoured

Jax wins if he reaches Karthus because Counter Strike and Leap Strike force him to fight in melee where Lay Waste is harder to isolate.

Watch for Wall of Pain slows you and reduces your resistances, buying time for Defile and Lay Waste damage.

    How to beat

Approach from the side instead of running through Wall of Pain in a straight line. Leap Strike after he places Wall or after a missed Lay Waste, then stay close so isolated Qs are harder for him to place cleanly. Leave space to exit Death Defied damage after the kill instead of standing in Defile to finish unnecessary autos.

Later Jax dominates side lane unless Karthus has a wave and terrain to kite through. In teamfights Karthus can still trade his life for huge damage, so Jax should kill him quickly and then step out of his passive zone.

    • Do not chase through Wall of Pain before using Leap Strike.
    • Close melee movement makes Lay Waste timing harder for him.
    • After he dies, the duel is not over because Death Defied keeps casting.
    • Magic resist is valuable because almost all of his relevant damage ignores Counter Strike.

  • Kassadin

    KassadinEven

Jax can beat Kassadin in a committed melee fight, but Null Sphere silence and Riftwalk make it hard to force that fight on Jax's terms.

Watch for Null Sphere silences you, preventing the immediate Counter Strike or Empower timing you need to punish him.

    How to beat

Do not Leap Strike first while Kassadin has Riftwalk available unless he is already trapped against terrain. Walk him down, bait Null Sphere, and activate Counter Strike after the silence ends so he cannot trade autos for free. Commit when Riftwalk was just used aggressively or when he lacks mana for repeated escapes.

Later Kassadin is harder to pin down late, but he still loses if locked into a long side-lane fight. In teamfights he reaches backline faster than Jax, so Jax should pressure side lanes or hold Counter Strike for Kassadin's entry if peeling is required.

    • A silenced Jax cannot start Counter Strike on time.
    • Do not chase every Riftwalk stack into fog; his burst improves as you overextend.
    • Kassadin's passive reduces your magic damage, but your sustained autos still matter.
    • Force him to spend mana escaping before the real all-in.

Jax wins because Counter Strike interrupts Death Lotus and Katarina has no sustained damage once her cooldowns are spent.

Watch for Death Lotus deals heavy channel damage if you have already used Counter Strike or Leap Strike cannot interrupt it in time.

    How to beat

Hold Counter Strike until she commits with Shunpo or starts Death Lotus. Let her spend Bouncing Blade and Sinister Steel poke if needed, then Leap Strike onto her after Shunpo leaves her with no easy reposition. The moment she channels, stun immediately and finish the auto trade.

Later Jax wins the side lane decisively, while Katarina is more dangerous in teamfights if she gets resets from low-health allies. Do not tunnel a split push so hard that she gets a cleanup fight; either force her to answer you or save stun for her ultimate.

    • Never waste Counter Strike before Death Lotus is accounted for.
    • If she Shunpos onto you, she has chosen the melee fight Jax wants.
    • Her damage reduction after Shunpo can bait your burst, so keep hitting after it fades.
    • Stay away from low-health teammates if she is looking for Voracity resets.

  • Kayle

    KayleUnfavoured

Kayle can kite Jax with Reckoning and Divine Blessing, fight outside melee with Righteous Fury, and deny his finishing burst with Intervention.

Watch for Intervention makes your all-in fail during the exact seconds you need to finish her.

    How to beat

Do not Leap Strike into Reckoning unless you can force Intervention immediately. Bait Righteous Fury uptime by stepping in and out, then engage when her ranged attacks are about to fall off or when she used Divine Blessing for movement. If she ults, stop spending burst and resume the chase as it ends.

Later Kayle is one of the harder finished side-lane opponents because she scales as a ranged damage dealer with invulnerability. In teamfights she also brings Intervention for a carry, so Jax should look for flanks after Kayle uses Q or R rather than diving first.

    • Track Righteous Fury duration; fighting the whole window favors Kayle.
    • Counter Strike does not stop the spell damage attached to her ranged autos well enough by itself.
    • Do not Empower into Intervention if you can hold the hit.
    • Boots or item slows matter because her W can break your chase timing.

  • Kennen

    KennenUnfavoured

Kennen's range, Lightning Rush escape, and repeated Mark of the Storm stuns make it hard for Jax to keep a clean melee exchange.

Watch for Mark of the Storm stun stops your chase or interrupts your Counter Strike follow-through once he stacks three marks.

    How to beat

Stay outside free auto range until Kennen uses Thundering Shuriken or Lightning Rush on the wave. Leap Strike after Lightning Rush is down, then use Counter Strike to force him to choose between stunning you defensively or taking the melee trade. If Slicing Maelstrom is ready, do not stand in it after your stun ends unless he is already killable.

Later Jax can beat Kennen in a side lane only when he catches Lightning Rush on cooldown; otherwise Kennen kites and disengages. Kennen's teamfight ultimate is stronger in grouped fights, so Jax should split pressure or flank after Maelstrom is committed.

    • One mark changes the trade; two marks means he can threaten the stun immediately.
    • Do not Leap Strike into Lightning Rush unless you know where he will end.
    • Counter Strike dodges his empowered W auto, but not the storm damage.

Jax deletes Kog'Maw if he gets on top of him, but Bio-Arcane Barrage and Void Ooze can kill or kite Jax before that happens.

Watch for Bio-Arcane Barrage extends his range and adds percent-health magic damage, punishing you before you can start the duel.

    How to beat

Do not walk straight through Void Ooze while Bio-Arcane Barrage is active. Wait out or sidestep the ooze, then Leap Strike from fog or after he uses the slow so Counter Strike covers his strongest auto window. After killing him, move away from Icathian Surprise instead of greeding for minions or a second target.

Later In a pure side lane Jax wins if he reaches Kog'Maw, but finished Kog'Maw wins front-to-back teamfights when protected. Jax needs flank angles, fog, or a saved Leap Strike rather than charging through his team.

    • Counter Strike is strongest during Bio-Arcane Barrage, not before it.
    • Void Ooze on your landing spot can turn a winning jump into a failed chase.
    • Remember his passive explosion after the kill.
    • Magic resist is better than only armor because his anti-health damage is magic.

  • Lee Sin

    Lee SinEven

Jax wins the longer duel if Counter Strike denies Lee Sin's Flurry autos, but Lee can burst, shield, slow, and kick Jax out before that happens.

Watch for Dragon's Rage knocks you away and resets the fight after you spend Leap Strike.

    How to beat

Stand behind minions or move laterally so Sonic Wave is not a free opener. If Lee enters with Resonating Strike, activate Counter Strike as he lands to deny his passive autos and force him to fight without energy value. Save Leap Strike when possible until after Dragon's Rage or Safeguard creates distance.

Later Jax generally outscales Lee Sin in side-lane duels, but Lee Sin remains better at picking and displacing targets in teamfights. Force him to answer split pressure and avoid entering grouped fights through an angle where Dragon's Rage can kick you into his team.

    • Counter Strike denies the Flurry autos he needs for energy and damage.
    • If Sonic Wave misses, you can take much more space for the next few seconds.

Leona lacks the sustained damage to beat Jax alone, and her crowd control mainly delays a duel he wins once it continues.

Watch for Shield of Daybreak stuns you and can hold you inside follow-up Solar Flare or allied damage.

    How to beat

This duel is uncommon because Leona normally exists with a damage partner. Alone, let her engage first, then use Counter Strike after Shield of Daybreak so she cannot add meaningful autos while Eclipse runs. Commit after Eclipse's resistances expire; before that, you are mostly burning time into her tank window.

Later Jax wins any side-lane 1v1, but Leona is far more relevant in teamfights because her crowd control starts fights for her carries. Split push away from her engage or wait for Solar Flare before diving the backline.

    • Do not judge the fight while Eclipse is active; wait it out.
    • Counter Strike cannot stop her stuns, so use it after the first one lands.

Lulu can kite Jax with Glitterlance, disable his melee window with Whimsy, and survive his burst with Help, Pix! and Wild Growth.

Watch for Whimsy turns you harmless during your engage window, letting Lulu walk out after you Leap Strike.

    How to beat

Do not open from maximum Leap Strike range if Whimsy is available; she will polymorph or speed away and waste your cooldown. Walk up with minion cover, bait Glitterlance, then jump only when Whimsy or Wild Growth has been forced. If Wild Growth is used, back up until the knock-up and bonus health stop buying time, then re-enter with cooldowns.

Later Lulu is difficult to solo when she has all defensive cooldowns, but she does not want to answer Jax forever in a side lane. In teamfights she is a major anti-dive support, so Jax should pressure side lanes or force her cooldowns before committing to a carry.

    • Polymorph during Counter Strike wastes your stun timing.
    • Glitterlance slow is enough for her to kite if you Leap too early.

Watch for Light Binding roots you, stopping Leap Strike follow-up and setting up Lucent Singularity plus Finales Funkeln.

    How to beat

Approach through minions so Light Binding is harder to land directly. Bait Lucent Singularity or force her to detonate it for wave control, then Leap Strike after Binding misses or hits a minion. Save Counter Strike for the melee stun after you arrive; it will not protect you from her spell combo on the way in.

Later Jax wins side-lane duels if Lux misses Binding, but Lux is more valuable in grouped fights where she can shield and burst from range. Use side pressure and flank paths rather than running through open mid-lane vision.

    • A minion between you and Lux changes the whole engage.
    • Do not Leap while Light Binding is still easy for her to cast on your landing.

Malphite's armor, attack-speed slow, and Granite Shield blunt Jax's sustained damage while his magic damage and engage ignore much of Counter Strike's value.

Watch for Ground Slam reduces your Attack Speed, cutting the core damage pattern Jax needs to win the duel.

    How to beat

Do not trade into Granite Shield; tap it off first, then wait before committing. Bait Ground Slam or let its attack-speed slow expire before using your main Empower and Grandmaster's Might window. If he uses Unstoppable Force aggressively and misses your follow-up stun window, disengage until your attack speed is normal again.

Later Finished Malphite can still deny Jax in side lane if he stacks armor and repeatedly slows attack speed, though Jax can win with enough mixed damage and sustain. Malphite's teamfight engage is much stronger, so Jax should split or flank after Unstoppable Force is gone.

    • Break Granite Shield before the real trade starts.

    How to beat

Do not Leap Strike first unless Nether Grasp is down or you have a cleanse item ready. Hold the edge of his spell range, let him spend Call of the Void or Malefic Visions on the wave, then jump in for a short stun trade and leave before his full combo is ready.

Later Finished Jax wins the side lane only if he can remove or block Nether Grasp; without that, Malzahar can still solo-lock him. In teamfights, flank after Malzahar has used ultimate or force him to ult someone else before committing.

    How to beat

Walk at him and start Counter Strike when he commits to autos, but do not instantly recast if Alpha Strike is available. Let him reappear, then stun and use Empower during the lockout before Highlander resets the spacing.

Later Jax remains the stronger side-lane duelist because Yi cannot freely auto through Counter Strike. In teamfights, save E for Yi's Highlander entry rather than spending it on the frontline.

    • If Yi Alpha Strikes early, your stun becomes almost guaranteed when he lands.

    How to beat

Avoid standing behind low-health minions so Double Up does not soften you before the all-in. Wait for Make It Rain or Bullet Time to be committed, then Leap Strike through the slow, activate Counter Strike, and stay on top of her until Strut cannot restart.

Later Jax wins the side lane decisively, while Miss Fortune is more dangerous in grouped fights with Bullet Time. Approach from the side so she has to choose between ulting your team and turning to peel you.

Watch for Black Shield blocks Counter Strike's stun and lets Morgana walk out of Jax's best commit window.

    How to beat

Do not throw Leap Strike straight into Black Shield unless you only need damage. Pressure just outside Dark Binding range, bait shield with a short Q-W trade, then re-engage when the shield is down and Counter Strike can actually stun.

Later Jax is the better side-lane threat if he has tenacity or a cleanse item, but Morgana is more valuable in teamfights when she denies his engage. Flank after Black Shield is used on a carry or force her to spend Soul Shackles defensively.

    • Counter Strike's dodge does nothing against Dark Binding, Tormented Soil, or Soul Shackles.

Jax can dodge Siphoning Strike with Counter Strike, but Wither attacks his movement and attack speed so hard that Nasus can decide the tempo if Jax wastes E.

Watch for Wither slows Jax's movement and attack speed over time, taking away both chase and sustained damage.

    How to beat

Trade before Wither ramps or after it is down; do not sit in Spirit Fire while trying to force a long duel. Use Counter Strike for Siphoning Strike and commit when Nasus has already used Wither or Fury of the Sands is unavailable.

Later A heavily stacked Nasus can match or beat Jax in the side lane if Wither is not cleansed, while Jax is usually better at diving carries in fights. If Nasus ults early, disengage with Leap Strike and re-enter after the sandstorm value is gone.

    • Counter Strike can deny Siphoning Strike because it is an empowered basic attack.

    How to beat

Do not start an all-in after stepping on a trap or eating a long Javelin Toss. Hold Leap Strike until she uses Pounce or commits cougar form, then Counter Strike through her Takedown window and force the fight before Primal Surge resets her health.

Later Jax is stronger in a closed side-lane duel, but Nidalee can avoid him and siege or poke before objectives. Use wards and flank routes to deny her long-range spear setup rather than chasing through brush traps.

    • A trapped Jax should wait out the shred before dueling if possible.

Nunu's slows are annoying, but he lacks the sustained duel damage to beat Jax if Absolute Zero is interrupted or escaped.

Watch for Ice Blast slows Jax's movement and attack speed, delaying the engage and reducing his damage window.

    How to beat

Do not chase forever through repeated Ice Blasts; take short trades until he has to use it defensively. Save Leap Strike or Counter Strike stun for Absolute Zero, because stopping that channel removes his only real kill threat.

Later Jax wins side lane, while Nunu is mostly a teamfight and objective support. In grouped fights, do not let Blood Boil carries free-hit while you waste time on Nunu unless he channels Absolute Zero in your team.

    • Counter Strike does not stop Ice Blast's slow, so plan around a slower attack cycle.
    • If he channels Absolute Zero after your stun is down, Leap Strike out instead of finishing autos.
    • Consume does not help him in a pure champion duel unless he has nearby monsters or minions.

  • Olaf

    OlafUnfavoured

Olaf can ignore Counter Strike's stun with Ragnarok and keep dealing true damage through Jax's dodge window.

Watch for Ragnarok makes Olaf immune to Counter Strike's stun and lets him force the fight on his own terms.

    How to beat

Do not full-commit while Ragnarok is available unless Olaf is already low enough to die during your first burst. Bait Undertow, use Counter Strike to reduce his auto value before he ults, then disengage during Ragnarok and re-enter when the immunity ends.

Later Olaf is one of the harder finished side-lane checks because Reckless Swing and Vicious Strikes keep working through messy fights. In teamfights, Jax should often bypass Olaf and threaten backline rather than dueling him during Ragnarok.

    • Counter Strike dodges autos, not Reckless Swing true damage.
    • Olaf gets more dangerous when low, so do not assume a half-health lead is enough.
    • If he misses Undertow, that is your best window to choose the trade length.

  • Pantheon

    PantheonEven

Pantheon controls short trades with Spear Shot and Aegis of Zeonia, but Jax wins if he blocks the follow-up damage and extends the fight.

Watch for Aegis Protection can block Jax's next basic attack or Empower hit, stealing a large part of his burst window.

    How to beat

Do not Leap Strike into him while his passive block is ready if Empower is your first hit. Let him spend Spear Shot or Aegis of Zeonia, activate Counter Strike during Heartseeker Strike follow-up, then keep the trade going after his cooldowns are down.

Later Jax outscales Pantheon in the side lane as long as he does not get chunked before the duel starts. Pantheon brings map pressure with Grand Skyfall, so push side lanes hard and be ready to answer his roam rather than matching his first move.

    • Pop Aegis Protection with a normal hit before using Empower if you can.
    • Counter Strike is excellent after Pantheon stuns, because he wants immediate follow-up attacks.
    • Do not fight from low health after repeated Spear Shot poke.

  • Rammus

    RammusUnfavoured

Rammus punishes Jax for attacking him with Defensive Ball Curl and Puncturing Taunt, turning Jax's own attack speed into reflected damage.

Watch for Puncturing Taunt forces Jax to attack into Defensive Ball Curl while his Armor is reduced.

    How to beat

Never unload into Defensive Ball Curl if Taunt is available. Bait Powerball or Taunt, wait out Ball Curl when possible, then take a short magic-heavy Empower trade and leave before Tremors and reflect damage grind you down.

Later Rammus can hold Jax in side lane better than most tanks, especially with armor stacking, but Jax is still more threatening to structures if Rammus leaves. In teamfights, do not be the first target he taunts; wait until he commits to peel or engage elsewhere.

    • Counter Strike does not protect you while Taunt forces attacks into reflect damage.
    • His armor also becomes attack damage through Spiked Shell, so armor stacking is not purely defensive for him.
    • Short trades are much better than testing your full attack speed into Ball Curl.

    RyzeUnfavoured

Ryze roots Jax before he reaches melee and wins extended spell rotations that Counter Strike cannot dodge.

Watch for Rune Prison roots Jax in place, denying his chase window while Ryze chains Overload and Spell Flux.

    How to beat

Do not approach in a straight line while Rune Prison is up unless you can cleanse it or immediately Leap Strike. Bait one rotation, then jump after Rune Prison is used and force Ryze to fight during Counter Strike's stun instead of freely kiting with Desperate Power movement speed.

Later Ryze remains dangerous in side lane because his damage ignores Counter Strike's main strength, but Jax can kill him if he reaches melee with cleanse or spell shield available. In teamfights, flank from fog rather than front-engaging into Rune Prison.

    • Counter Strike dodges none of Ryze's spell combo.
    • Banshee's Veil can make the first Rune Prison fail and create your engage window.

  • Shaco

    ShacoFavoured

Shaco can trick Jax with fear boxes and clone damage, but he loses a clean melee duel when Counter Strike covers his backstab autos.

Watch for Jack In The Box fears Jax and breaks his chase long enough for Shaco to reposition behind him.

    How to beat

Do not chase through obvious box paths or into brush without vision. Hold Counter Strike for when Shaco exits Deceive or commits with Hallucinate, then stun the real one and avoid wasting Empower into the clone if it is about to explode.

Later Jax wins direct side-lane fights, while Shaco looks for picks, split pressure, and messy escapes. Keep lanes warded and force him to answer minions where Deceive paths are predictable.

    • Counter Strike denies Backstab autos if you face and time him correctly.
    • If both Shacos appear, watch which one uses items or takes more cautious movement.
    • Box fear is the main way he turns a losing duel, so sweep or path around setup areas.

    ShenFavoured

Shen is durable and can taunt to stall, but he lacks the damage to beat Jax once Counter Strike handles Ki Strike trades.

Watch for Shadow Dash taunts Jax and can pull him under bad positioning or interrupt his chosen trade timing.

    How to beat

Fight away from Shen's turret and do not let Shadow Dash drag you into a long unfavorable chase. Use Counter Strike after Ki Strike or Vorpal Blade marks the trade, then extend while Feint is down because Shen's cooldowns are mostly defensive.

Later Jax wins the side lane and forces Shen to choose between answering him and using Stand United. In teamfights, cancel or punish Shen after he shields an ally; if he ults away, take the tower or inhibitor pressure immediately.

    • Counter Strike can blank Ki Strike's attack damage but not Vorpal Blade's cast damage.
    • Save Leap Strike if Shen still has Shadow Dash and can create distance.
    • Your split push is the real pressure point because Stand United removes him from lane.

  • Singed

    SingedEven

Jax can beat Singed if he pins him down, but Singed wins by refusing the real duel and making Jax chase through Poison Trail.

Watch for Fling throws Jax behind Singed, forcing him into Poison Trail and breaking his melee uptime.

    How to beat

Do not chase through poison just because Singed is low. Hold Leap Strike for after Fling or Mega Adhesive, take short trades when Insanity Potion is down, and disengage if he turns the fight into a long run.

Later Jax is better at killing towers and winning a pinned duel, while Singed is better at wasting time and disrupting teamfights. In grouped fights, ignore him unless he overextends without Insanity Potion; otherwise dive past his trail toward carries.

    • Counter Strike does not stop Poison Trail from damaging you while you chase.
    • If Singed uses Fling before Mega Adhesive, Leap Strike can often reattach.
    • Do not judge the duel by health bars alone; poison keeps ticking after you stop hitting.

    SionEven

Jax can dodge Sion's Enrage attacks, but Cryptic Gaze and Cannibalism can swing the fight if Jax cannot burst through the healing window.

Watch for Cannibalism gives Sion heavy lifesteal during his attack window, undoing Jax's damage if Counter Strike is down.

    How to beat

Bait Death's Caress before committing so you do not spend Empower into the shield. Use Counter Strike when Sion activates Cannibalism or starts trading with Enrage, then either kill him during the stun or disengage until the lifesteal window ends.

Later Jax usually has better sustained side-lane threat, but Sion can still stat-check if his ultimate is allowed to run uninterrupted. In teamfights, avoid being caught by Cryptic Gaze before your E is active and apply anti-heal if Sion is the drain-tank build.

    • Do not break Death's Caress at point-blank range if it will explode on you.
    • Counter Strike is best saved for Cannibalism autos, not the first small trade.
    • Grievous Wounds matters more here than extra armor if Sion is healing through everything.

Sivir can block one spell and kite briefly, but she cannot survive Jax once Spell Shield is baited and Counter Strike denies her autos.

Watch for Spell Shield can block Leap Strike or Counter Strike's stun, wasting Jax's engage window and giving Sivir mana back.

    How to beat

Do not open with the ability she most wants to block; walk up, threaten Empower, or wait for her to shield early. Once Spell Shield is down, Leap Strike in, activate Counter Strike through Ricochet and On The Hunt autos, then stun before she can create space.

Later Jax wins the side lane hard, while Sivir is stronger grouped when On The Hunt accelerates her whole team. Flank instead of front-chasing so she cannot simply speed the team away from you.

    • Counter Strike dodges Ricochet's initial basic attack damage.
    • A wasted Spell Shield is your clearest all-in signal.
    • Boomerang Blade is easier to dodge after Leap Strike if you move sideways immediately.

  • Skarner

    SkarnerEven

Jax wins the long auto fight if Counter Strike covers Skarner's attack-speed window, but Impale can steal the first clean commit and drag him through a bad trade.

Watch for Impale suppresses Jax during his engage and removes his ability to keep attacking or time Counter Strike.

    How to beat

Do not leap into a fresh Crystalline Exoskeleton unless you can break the shield quickly; hold just outside his Q range and make him spend it to farm or chase. Commit after the shield drops, activate Counter Strike as he starts trading autos, and save Leap Strike for after Impale if he can still pull you away.

Later Finished Jax is the better side-lane duelist, especially once he can survive the suppression and keep hitting. In teamfights Skarner's pick threat is more valuable, so Jax should split or enter after Impale is used.

    • Counter Strike does not stop Impale, so do not count on it as your answer to his ultimate.
    • If his W shield breaks, he loses both speed and attack speed; that is the real all-in window.

  • Sona

    SonaFavoured

Sona can poke and disengage once, but she cannot survive Jax if he reaches her after Crescendo or Power Chord is spent.

Watch for Crescendo stuns Jax during his leap-in and gives Sona time to kite or let teammates collapse.

    How to beat

Respect her 550 range poke, but do not waste Leap Strike for a half trade while her stun is ready. Bait Crescendo with forward movement or a minion jump, then re-engage and stay in melee where her auras do not beat Jax's sustained damage.

Later Jax destroys Sona alone in a side lane, but she is almost never the isolated target. In teamfights he should flank her after Crescendo is used or force her to ult defensively instead of following up her team's engage.

    • Watch Power Chord stacks; the damage-reduction chord makes your first burst trade much weaker.
    • Leap Strike after Crescendo, not into it, whenever you can afford to wait.
    • Her W armor and resist aura buys time, but it does not make her a duelist.

  • Soraka

    SorakaFavoured

Soraka delays the kill with silence, armor, and healing, but she lacks the damage and mobility to win a clean duel against Jax.

Watch for Infuse silences Jax during his engage and can stop the Empower or Counter Strike timing that makes the trade lethal.

    How to beat

Stand outside Starcall range until you are ready to commit, because repeated casts lower your magic resist and make her poke matter. Wait out or bait Infuse, then Leap Strike in and keep hitting through Astral Blessing rather than resetting the fight.

Later Jax wins the side lane decisively if Soraka is alone, but her real value is keeping carries alive in grouped fights. Buy anti-heal when her healing is changing kills, then dive past her only if silence is unavailable.

    • Do not let repeated Starcalls stack before the all-in.
    • Infuse is the cooldown that decides whether your engage is clean.
    • If Wish is available, expect to need one more rotation instead of stopping after the first burst.

  • Taric

    TaricEven

Jax has better sustained damage, but Taric's armor aura, point-click stun, and heal make short trades awkward until Jax can force an extended fight.

Watch for Dazzle stuns Jax at the start of the trade and lets Taric land Shatter and Radiance before Jax is attacking back.

    How to beat

Do not leap first if Taric is holding Dazzle and standing near his minion wave. Walk up, bait the stun, then use Counter Strike after Shatter so your dodge covers his empowered basic attacks and you can chase during his heal cooldown.

Later Jax outscales Taric as a side-lane threat, but Taric's armor aura and stun matter more in grouped fights. Split push him when possible; in teamfights, avoid being the first target Dazzled.

    • Shatter lowers your armor after it hits, so do not extend a bad trade immediately after it.
    • Counter Strike is strongest after Dazzle, when Taric wants to follow with autos.
    • His heal makes poke trades low value; fight to force cooldowns or do not fight at all.

  • Teemo

    TeemoUnfavoured

Teemo's blind, poison, movement speed, and mushrooms all attack the parts of Jax's duel pattern that require sticking and landing basic attacks.

Watch for Blinding Dart makes Jax miss basic attacks during his Counter Strike or Empower window.

    How to beat

Hold outside his auto range unless Leap Strike is ready, and never start the full all-in while Blinding Dart is available. Force blind with a short jump trade, back off through a known path, then re-enter when blind and Move Quick are down.

Later Jax can kill Teemo instantly if he gets on top of him, but shroom control makes the side lane dangerous without vision. In teamfights Teemo is fragile, so Jax should flank from cleared angles instead of chasing through traps.

    • Counter Strike does not protect your attacks from Blinding Dart.
    • Do not chase in a straight line through unwarded mushroom paths.

Tristana can reset the spacing with Rocket Jump and Buster Shot, so Jax only wins if he forces one escape before committing the second time.

Watch for Buster Shot knocks Jax out of melee after Leap Strike and breaks the all-in before his sustained damage starts.

    How to beat

Approach from brush or a minion angle so she has to choose between Rocket Jump and Buster Shot early. If she uses either defensively, hold Leap Strike for the other cooldown and activate Counter Strike only once you are actually in auto range.

Later Finished Tristana is extremely hard to pin down in open space and brings more teamfight range. Jax still wins side-lane fights from fog or with cooldown advantage, but he should not front-door dive her through both displacement spells.

    • Do not Leap Strike into an obvious Buster Shot unless it secures the stun first.

Watch for Undying Rage prevents the kill during Jax's best all-in window and lets Tryndamere keep critting while Jax waits it out.

    How to beat

Trade when Counter Strike is available and avoid fighting a full Fury Tryndamere without a way out. Force Undying Rage, then Leap Strike to a minion or walk away until it ends before re-entering for the kill.

Later The side lane stays skill-dependent: Jax wins if he denies autos with Counter Strike and kites the ultimate, Tryndamere wins if he sticks through it. In teamfights Jax contributes more reliable disruption, while Tryndamere is better at forcing messy cleanup fights.

    • Counter Strike is best used after he commits with Spinning Slash, not before.

Twisted Fate can stun and poke, but in a fair isolated duel he is too immobile to survive Jax after Pick A Card is spent.

Watch for Gold Card from Pick A Card stops Jax's engage and gives Twisted Fate room to land Wild Cards while backing away.

    How to beat

Do not leap into a locked Gold Card unless you are already close enough to stun him afterward. Pressure his card cycle, wait for Blue or Red Card, then Leap Strike and hold Counter Strike for his follow-up attacks rather than the first stun.

Later Jax crushes Twisted Fate in the side lane if Destiny and Gate do not turn it into a numbers play. In teamfights, Jax should track Gold Card and punish TF after he uses it on someone else.

    • A locked Gold Card is the fight; a cycling deck is your opening.
    • Destiny's slow can stop a chase from becoming clean, so commit only when you can finish through it.

Twitch can open from stealth and stack poison before Jax reaches him, but Counter Strike heavily punishes his reliance on basic attacks once Jax closes.

    How to beat

Avoid standing in isolated lanes without vision when Ambush is missing from the map. If he opens on you, Counter Strike the Spray and Pray or Rapid auto window, then Leap Strike after Venom Cask so he cannot simply slow and walk away.

Later Jax wins the side-lane duel if he survives the opener and reaches Twitch, but Twitch's teamfight damage is much scarier through a frontline. Jax should flank from angles that cut off Spray and Pray rather than approach through the whole bolt line.

    • Do not use Counter Strike before Twitch reveals unless you know he must commit.

    How to beat

Fight away from walls and do not spend Leap Strike until Condemn is forced or you can land Counter Strike immediately after arriving. If Final Hour is active, track the invisible Tumble direction before committing your stun, because missing that window usually loses the duel.

Later Vayne is favored in open side-lane space if she has room to kite, while Jax wins from fog, flank angles, or wall-safe terrain. In teamfights Jax should threaten her cooldowns first and only dive once Condemn is unavailable.

    • Never duel her with your back near a wall.

    How to beat

Hold Leap Strike until after Event Horizon is placed, then jump to Veigar or a minion that keeps you inside the cage without touching the wall. If he misses cage or uses it defensively, commit immediately before his burst rotation comes back.

Later Veigar's burst scales hard enough that Jax cannot casually face-check him, but Veigar still loses isolated fights without cage. In teamfights Jax should flank from outside vision and avoid being the first target trapped by Event Horizon.

    • Leap Strike can save you from walking through the cage edge.

    How to beat

Do not start a low-health duel where Blood Scent lets Warwick choose the chase. Bait Hunter's Call or Infinite Duress before using Counter Strike, then re-engage with anti-heal or cleanse available so his sustain does not erase your first rotation.

Later Warwick remains a stubborn side-lane opponent, but Jax can beat him with QSS and enough damage if he denies the post-ultimate auto chain. In teamfights Warwick's lockdown is more reliable, so Jax should avoid being the first suppressed target.

    • Counter Strike does not stop Infinite Duress.

    How to beat

Do not instantly stun after Nimbus Strike unless you know Decoy is down. Let him use Crushing Blow or Decoy first, then Counter Strike the follow-up autos and chase once his escape is gone.

Later Jax is stronger in a pure side-lane duel if he does not waste cooldowns on Decoy. Wukong is often more explosive in teamfights with Cyclone knockup, so Jax should split or enter after Wukong's engage has passed.

    • Pause a beat after he vanishes; stunning the clone loses the trade.
    • Counter Strike is excellent after Nimbus Strike because Wukong wants to auto with the attack-speed boost.

Watch for Chronoshift revives Zilean after Jax commits his burst and can leave Jax stranded with cooldowns down.

    How to beat

Hold enough health to survive double Time Bomb poke before engaging, and do not Leap Strike into a full slow unless you can still reach him. Force Chronoshift with the first all-in, step back during the revive, then re-enter as soon as the mark is gone and Time Warp is not available.

Later Jax wins the side lane if Zilean is truly alone, but Zilean's speed, slow, and revive are much stronger around carries. In teamfights Jax should force Chronoshift on the wrong target or wait it out before committing to the kill.

    • Time Warp can be either his escape or your slow; track which use he spends.
